This is why I love Aaron Blaise, he shows every single breakdown in his videos that other artists may not exactly show in tutorials. Painting with light overall has been a struggle for me but I think this and the series really helped a lot, especially seeing how colors are added on top of local colors

You are my favourite art teacher. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. Every time I get asked what inspired me to become an artist I have to say it was when I was little and I saw a short documentary on how Disney movies were made. The fact that they were just all drawings absolutely blew my mind. To this day I'm amazed by that. Though I appreciate what CGI has to offer, the good old days with painted backgrounds and hand drawn figures just really resonates with me. I feel privileged to have access to someone who worked on something like Brother Bear (which I've watched a LOT with my kid). Keep on keeping on. We appreciate you.

I love how your art still has the magic of those old 2D Disney movies. Now I am highly motivated to do similar art. You've rekindled that childhood innocence of mine as a kid who grew up watching Disney movies and cartoons and can't believe how simple and good times were back then. You helped me find such a precious part of myself that got lost during the course of time, I will never be able to thank you enough.

I'm so glad I've found this. Most Photoshop painting tutorials I've ran across just talk about art theory and the artist doesn't say anything about WHAT they actually use to get things done - they just say "you need ____ because ____." You added the "and here is how you can do that in Photoshop" part! Thank you!

I always think I'm a late bloomer and all that, but I realize that we all have our own pace and I'm always remembering that I have to take one step at a time, just like your process in painting. So, i saw this tutorial a long time ago, and before i used to have a lot of problems with spots and stripes and stuff like that up to the point where i would avoid them whenever i could. Well, not since i learned this trick, in fact i used it in a lot of other things, it's great for setting up your lighting and then you can do other shadows and lights "by hand" to improve it and get an even better result. I just wanted to say that, thank you Mr. Blaise, you helped me a lot.

oh my word this makes so much sense. I don't have photoshop but I do have a program called firealpaca that uses multiply and overlay blend modes just like this. quick additions to what you cover in here: 1: The term 'multiply' is completely literal; the computer regards 'black' as the number '0', and 'white' as the number '1', and every number inbetween is a decimal. 0.5 multiplied by 0.5 = 0.25, which is closer to 0, and therefore going to be darker, etc. etc. this can be really useful for figuring out in exactly what way your multiply layer will affect the layers underneath, especially if you're doing something less painterly or specifically for print where the specific values of each color can be important. 2: Your brush can also work on a blending mode, and each stroke will apply the same effect as a layer on said blending mode. I use this a lot when I want strong effects, because it layers the effect repeatedly on top of itself. Some blending modes give you these beautiful, naturalistic progression through a range of colors as opposed to just one lighter and one darker color transitioning evenly from one to the other. 3: In addition to the above point, there's a keyboard shortcut for changing blending modes; Alt+shift+[insert letter here]. Alt+shift+M = multiply, alt+shift+H = hard light, etc. if you're using the gradient, brush, or any other tool that can use blending modes, it puts the blending mode on that tool. if you have a tool selected that can't be affected by blending modes, the shortcut will change the blending mode of the layer you have selected.
