When I started my nursing career, I was one of two bilingual nurses in the entire 316 bed hospital where I worked. This was before certified interpreter services and when they didn't seem to think twice about, or worry about, accuracy. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Just because someone is bilingual, it doesn't mean they're a qualified interpreter.

I find it really cringe that, especially in a medical setting, admin seems to think it's just fine to not have an interpreter and just let their kids or other family members sub in. It's gotten a lot better in recent years, though. We have access to a hotline that covers most every language with trained interpreters.

@@mr.peanut2096 Well typically an interpreter is only supposed to interpret. This means that we don't use any of our own words; just interpret back and forth. The only exception would be if there was an obvious misunderstanding on either side that they need to clear up. And unless the patient specifically requests it, we're supposed to interpret both what the doctor says to the patient, and what the patient says to the doctor. Also we're supposed to speak in first person, so it's more like they're talking directly to each other (so think like "It hurts when I" rather than "He says it hurts when he"). Shall I continue or does that suffice haha

well she initiated it by calling him cute. about the translation parts: issues with the penis are just as valid as any others and in some cases we simply need interpreters to do our job as doctors/nurses/medical personnel. Enough patients already wait to long to see a doctor with issues about their sexual organs, we shouldn't be ashamed to talk about them. A penis is no different from any other body parts outside of sexual activity.

As a nurse who relies on medical interpreters on a regular basis, a good one is hard to find and worth their weight in gold. Typically I get interpreters who add in their own comments, try to ask their own questions, try to advocate for the patient, embellish the patients comments, I have even had them request additional diagnostic treatment, testing and consultations. I understand enough of various languages to know what is being said but I still require a translator for my patients when they are meeting with me and a physician.

@@XpVersusVista it can be really hard for deaf people who know sign language to write, because spoken/written English is a completely different language than sign language. It uses different grammar, differen implications, everything about it is just very different. So for many deaf people, it can be difficult to have to switch. It depends on how comfortable they are, though, and your patient might have preferred writing. That is extremely uncommon, though. I recommend making sure that they know that you want them to use the communication method they prefer, and make sure you don't make them uncomfortable. When you aren't deaf, it can be hard to fully understand what's wrong with not having an interpreter, but that doesn't mean it's ok to stop someone from having or using one.

@@bettievw well then i see what the problem was. Lynn didn't read entirely what i wrote. She did have an interpreter with her, her mother. In case you don't know, ophthalmology is eye care. It was easier for the patient to read the letters on the visus test and write them down, instead of signing the letters to her interpreter and having her tell me what letters the patient sees on the test. This has as i feared nothing to do with lack of "deaf language" on my part. I never took the patients choice away to use her interpreter. I simply asked her if she would like to write it down instead of using the interpreter and she preferred it.

I had a doctor snap at me for answering for a patient, when she in fact had answered the doctor herself. We all had masks on at the time, otherwise he would have seen her lips move and known it wasn't me. She understood the doctor because he was speaking slowly and clearly, and her husband taught English (so she did know some English). Woulda been nicer without masks... Hate being yelled at when I was being "good" and not interfering with the doctor's conversation with her.

We were there to ask the doctor a huge favor (refill a prescription from a foreign country), so I didn't want to unintentionally sour the doc's mood. Plus I was completely caught off guard that he thought I'd spoken in the first place - I spent my time processing that instead of correcting him right away. I'm not a professional interpreter, but have interpreted for many friends at their medical appointments. Other times, though (like in this case), the doctor has an interpreter that they 'phone' in to (there's a camera, too, so the interpreter can see). It's alright (I understand why they do it). But also, I happen to be competent, and sometimes even more useful than the actual interpreter (because I'll have lots of background info about the patient, or for other reasons). ... In this case, the doctor DID grant us the favor my friend needed. We were very appreciative. =)

I learned ASL because we have deaf people in our family and even considered going the interpreter route beause having a medical background helps. I don't have good brain hand coordination. But I did hear a lot of funny stories from my deaf instructors through the years.

GlorifiedGremlin It’s not as simple as you think. Especially to do it in a quick manner in exactly the same tone, inflection, and conveying the same education-level, basic word choice, and other cultural markers from one language to another. And if one or the other person used a lot of idioms or religious phrases it can make the job even harder because those usually don’t translate from one language to another. Add in with my field of ASL you have people not understanding why you can’t (or shouldn’t) interpret both languages at the same time so you’ll have hearing people asking questions at the same time that you’re signing to the client. If someone is interested in becoming an interpreter their best bet is to take language classes at a community college and look in to interpreter/translator requirements for their state/country. There might be different requirements depending on language. I know in my state for ASL interpreting it’s a 2-year degree (not counting ASL classes) at community college and then various certificates beyond that depending on where you’ll be interpreting and your skill level. Medical interpreting is among the most skilled. But some states require a bachelors or masters degree for the same thing.

This has happened to me translating 😂 I had to call the interpreters even though I understood everything because I wasn't certified and I'd catch sooooooo many mistakes! This one happened way to often... when I would say the name of our hospital during a call, the interpretor would hear the word "Oregon" and translate it as "hospital of transplants" as of I said "organ" instead 😂 (not the in-house interpreters, the out-of-state ones over a phone service). The patient would freak out and I'd correct the interpreter, who would be surprised I understood! I worked there for about 12 years and this happened at least 2 or 3 times per year 😳

A trained interpreter would not react with a personal comment on the subject nor speak in first person nor have a separate conversation with the patient and not interpret transparently. Many ethics principles are being ignored. This is indeed terrible. There are many unqualified bilinguals working as interpreters by need for their relatives from childhood. A natural thing to do. Thank God federal funds are available to cover the cost of offering qualified interpreters to all hospitals schools and courts. Many factors involved in setting this up. The American Disabilities Act and the laws guaranteeing American Sign Language interpreters to the deaf, together with other human rights laws make it a right for a person who cannot speak English to receive the services of an interpreter in these three types of settings. Also physicians have often no idea that their malpractice insurance does not cover misunderstandings and the consequences of these when they try to speak the patients native language & not use an interpreter. Last but not least it is the law to use an interpreter. Ignorance of the law does not justify breaking it. I can only invite you to check the famous lawsuit of the Spanish-speaking patient arriving to the ER sick to his stomach for something he ate, where the people with him said in Spanish he was "intoxicado", the bilingual Nurse interpreted it as intoxicated and the treatment given to him based on this condition left him quadraplegic! Many more lawsuits like this plague school systems, courts and hospitals, unfortunately. This is the company I work for, in case video remote interpretation is an option. Second largest in the USA. I teach preschool and use an interpreter for parent teacher conferences and he does that 🤦🏻‍♀️ our meetings take forever because of his side conversations. Not to mention he constantly has trouble understanding me so I’m never sure how well he’s even translating.

I used to be an ASL interpreter and my friends and I in college would go to clubs or concerts and while everyone else is struggling to talk to people right next to them, we were having conversations easily as long as there was enough light, lol. Also, if you’re in a restaurant, you can keep talking with your mouth full as long as you’re careful to set down your fork, lol. More than once I’ve sent my fork (or pencil or eye glasses) flying on accident.

I do registration in an ER and have to work with interpreters pretty often, most often via phone/video but sometimes in person, and it's usually kind of awkward. What mostly happens is I get chastised to not speaking to the patient so much as speaking to the interpreter. It's very difficult to talk normally to one person when you know the person doing the listening is actually someone else. I have 4 years of high school Spanish so can understand some portion of it and that makes it easier but the ASL or other languages I just have to take it for granted they're not talking shit or water. Once while using video for an ASL patient lying in the bed, I actually had something in front of the facing camera to the patient and interpreter couldn't see each other. D'oh!

Seems like she is untrained medical interpreter. I'm a medical interpreter and finished course, we always use first person for smooth conversation. Also we should interpreted all the conversation even curse. When I go to work, I always said to everybody " All the conversation in this room will interpreted and will keep confidential. I worked in social services at a call center. We had a contract with a translator/interpreter service. We had a lot of callers that would just want a family member to interpret for them, but we couldn’t do that because of the policy, the idea being that the accuracy of the information needed to be legally protected (so people could be charged with fraud for outright lying, misrepresenting things, etc). I understood why the policy was in place, but 99.9% of the time people were honest and just needed help. Actual fraud was super duper rare. I only ever sent a handful of cases to the fraud review team out of the thousands of cases I handled. But, you know, government is very CYA, which is understandable. I only popped on here to say that most of the interpreters were awesome, but a couple of times it wasn’t really a pleasant experience. Once, a Russian interpreter was like yelling at this poor girl, and I felt awful. I always took specific, conscious care to keep a pleasant tone for every call, but I really ramped it up for that one. I hope it helped, but I have no idea if it did or not.

The interpreters are licenced medical professionals. If it helps treat the patients by facilitating communication they are brought in. Similar to how his nurses will need to talk to him and get the relevant information. Of course in reality medical interpreters aren't like this and would have gone ahead and translated the patient's concerns without all this extra garbage in the skit

My least favorite thing that a few interpreters do is omit some things I say to the patient out of embarrassment. I mean it's your job to translate everything, not determine what the patient should hear. Most interpreters are excellent though.

@doc Schmidt being in a different country, I can understand the pain of taking the history myself. And if I call a interpreter it would just make things more complex eg : the patinet speaks 100 words the interpreter tells you back only 10 - 15 , I ask them back where have all the things which patinet told gone 😏
