I'll never forget the day my buddy and I were drunkenly walking down an alley and found a decrepit old Rhodes in a trashcan behind an apartment complex mostly populated by fairly affluent college students. It had- get this- lost the negative connection inside. That's ALL that stopped it from working. I fixed it in like twenty minutes, and we (he's a woodwinds player and I'm a bass/guitar/various strings guy) didn't really know what we were going to do with it other than just plunk around and sit drinks and pool chalk (said buddy had a 7' 1-piece slate table in his living room-priorities) and stuff on it til we met an AWESOME newbie keys player. He later recorded and toured with it, said it was 100% reliable.

78-year-old Piano Tuner-Technician (semi-retired) posting here: As a trainee years ago, I had the privilege of attending a workshop presented by Mr. Rhodes himself: personal history of the piano, tuning procedures, mechanical adjustments, electronics. I still have a Rhodes pick-up in my tool kit feeding into a pocket amplifier so that i can isolate the sound of a single string. This is very helpful while tuning during the sound checks before a live performance!

@@NicolasMelis , JPJ always used the Electrapiano in the studio (Stairway, Down By the Seaside etc as well as NQ) because it has a much heavier action than the Rhodes, which he liked- very close to an acoustic piano. I wish I still had my 73. I picked it up cheap, got a service manual and did a complete service, stretch tuned it adjusted the fundamental tones and it sounded great. It was an older one with the wooden frame, I sold it to buy a stupid Marshall amplifier...what was I thinking?

Steely Dan Deacon blues. So many legendary songs from the late 60's through late 70's. Can't afford one now, but my Williams keyboard has a good emulation of it. And also have a 77' Yamaha cp25 that sounds almost like it. But nothing beats the original sound and if you have the money buy one used or the new special order ones (5k+usd) sound great too.

Good call-there were a few in there that are a LOT less famous than 10cc...how about Angela by Bob James (or does the recorder carry that "intro"?) and Shake a Tailfeather, the version Ray Charles played with the Blues Brothers? Still Crazy after All These Years? Dreams by Fleetwood Mac (or,is that intro a drum riff)? All way more famous. I'd love to hear these played as expertly as the others in this video!

wow - nice stuff incl a favourite Deacon Blues ! - as a childhood piano player for some reason I never liked the Rhodes key feel and always preferred the Wurly (Wurlitzer) tone, but hey I didn't record these hit songs.
