where to buy hoops, DVDs, and find other youtuber hoopers with tutorials and performances is in my other hula hooping video that covers all of that.
however, this video goes over
1) what not to get first off
2) hoop types (there are 2 types with a few sub-types )
3) hoop sizes - choose the perfect one based on your level
4) hoop weight (PSI, what that means for you)
5)hoop width (why its important when picking a hoop)
6) tape types (also important)
7) hoop prices based on type of hoop
8) further recommendations if you're still unsure about your hoop
9) check out my other video about WHERE to buy your hoop (LED sites included) as well as GREAT DVDs and youtube channels to check out.
further information about TYPES of tubbing can be found here hoopsupplies.co...
I decided to make a full out informational video about hoops, buying a hoop, prices, classes, and what you should look for as a beginner and intermediate because there were no videos out there that covered everything. Hope it helps anyone! leave a comment or like if it helped

I'd have to disagree with not using one of those cheap hula hoops from the department stores. Yeah, of course, they suck. I'm not denying that by any means. But I started out with one of those crappy ones. Wrapped it up with tape to make it a bit heavier, and made it my own. I wouldn't reccomend going out and buying, either. But, if there's one around the house that your little sister never uses or can only spare a lil' bit of cash at that moment, go ahead. I've been hula hooping for the past 3 years, and have definitely upgraded with my hula hoops (I finally got an LED huly for Xmas). But I think everyone should know that there's nothing wrong with using those crappy ones. You can practice many different tricks with it still, even if it is "too big" or "too small" for you. It's too light, whatever. You can easily teach yourself isolations which is actually the first trick I learned how to do. But when you get the cash, splurge on a nice polypro...or make a huly yourself! : )

That's a really great tip! I want to start hulahoop but don't really have the money to buy a professional one, plus I don't even know if I'm going to take this hobbie seriously... after hearing in the video about the cheap ones I got quite upset 😓 so good to know that cheap ones can be useful too

Agreed. I got my first one that was "too small" from dollar tree ($1) with the beads inside (you might want to empty it then retape because the sound gets annoying IMO). I just wanted to test it out since I wasn't sure how much time I'd spend on getting better at this new hobby. I've been enjoying it a lot more after practicing isos and lassos on the small 27" hoop from DT so I went to Target for an "upgrade." Got a shiny multicolor 36ish inch hoop for $6.99 and have gotten a lot better at my isos. This hoop tubing isn't perfectly circular and has a bit of an oval shape which makes gripping it a little tricky in addition to the shiny, slippery tape that's on it. So you can definitely use them to try it out but I def look forward to my next upgrade whether it's a bigger cheaper hoop to try shoulder hooping or a hoop with a different more professional material

i have videos on how to waist hoop and also how to walk while hooping so you can always practice walking and hooping on the waist while it's cold. What also helped me become better at moving and my waist was "Hula Hoop Dance Tutorial: Warm Ups with Anah Reichenbach (Part One)". You can literally dance with your hoop without even touching it. It takes practice but it helps you control the hoop AND have fun. SO you can practice walking while hooping, changing currents, & Anah's video. It'll help

if you're 35" and it's an additional 1 or 2 inches for the beginner then I'd suggest a 36" or 37". You can try a 37". If you want a bigger hoop that you can also share with others later on then you can get a 38". I know the avg hoop ppl like is a 36" but since it's your 1st hoop it might be different for you. I think either is fine. Make sure it's PE material (beginners use it) unless you want a lighter hoop in which case get a PVC and 3/4 thick 100 PSI

weighted will feel the same weight all around. I've seen people practice with water hoops but they have problems with certain tricks so they give up on the trick or continue to have problems with the trick and don't add as much style. So when they go to a normal hoop, it's faster and they feel lost. Try to invest in a hoop. ETSY has cheap hoops so for ur beginner get a naked hoop except for grip tape (get grip tape on it).

i actually don't recommend it because the screws com eloose and pull your hair out unexpectedly. But if you don't mind that then at least it's a light enough hoop where it wont scare you away from hooping over all. & who knows, they probably changed the way they made the hoops so maybe it also doesn't rattle anymore. But at the time i got it and with how they made it, i wouldn't recommend it.

since hooping isn't as popular as yoga, they might not have classes in your area. I live in a pretty busy state and there aren't many classes (but i learned from youtube and hoopnotica DVDs anyway). there is a website called Meetup though. type in your city and look up classes through there. If nothing else, there should still be flow jams or workshops (so people with poi, hoops, juggling, flow wands, staffs, & S blades can attend and share with each other)

collapsible and non-collapsible are good either way. if you don't get collapsible then (if u have a soccer mom van like our family does) the hoops fit perfectly around the seat as if the chair is the stick in a ring toss game so even if its non collapsible it can still travel with you. 100 psi i recommend and if you are comfrotable with walking while hooping then you can get a 37 or a 36. i should've gotten a 40 but got a 38 and it was fine.
@gemgen101
@gemgen101 12 жыл бұрын
its probably b/c its 40". by the time most get a poly pro or a LED they've used regular tubing (which is heavier) and gradually gone down sizes. So it might be the size that is making it heavy, otherwise poly pros are one of the lightest hoop materials out there. Grip tape you can get online at various hooping sites, i usually buy hoops with tape already on there. & yep :D I've used the Hoopnotica DVDs. they're very helpful for beginner stuff.Good to have youtube AND a DVD w/ troubleshooting

@atg07LOKA its probably because your natural direction is just eaiser to learn with and going the other way not only means you have to train your body to move unlike its use to but also because the hoop is simply smaller so you have to learn to adjust to the different feeling in the body a lot faster. A bigger hoop means you can adjust to reversing slower. the hoop in this video goes to a 32" too and i've used the 32" for reversing (practicing this week) and, 4 me, its harder for those reasons

Besides the fact that you are adorable - that info/video was amazing. Thank you for taking the time to explain all of that info. It's so crazy how much info you should really get straight before buying your first hoop. I was given a hand me down hoop in practically perfect shape that is probably an inch think and 42 inches in diameter and I thought it was way to big so I bought one on etsy for $29 at 37" diameter with 3/4 OD HDPE pipe. Now after seeing this I realize I have 2 great hoops to start with (and somewhere in between both is perfect for my 5 foot tall (slightly overweight body) and really all I need to do is just start flippin hooping. A zillion thumbs up to you.

I'm 13, 5'2'' and weigh around 90 pounds. I've been hooping when I can for a little under a month. I can walk backwards/forwards and run while waist hooping, turn in both directions, do basic dance moves, and can do the corkscrew up and down. The hoop I have now is a Walmart Wave Hoop that has water in it. I know I need to get a real hoop, but I'm not sure whether or not I should get one for an intermediate hopper, or a beginner hooper. Any suggestions?

The water in the hoop will also cause to be off balance, you will probably notice that it seems fine and all of a sudden there is a sudden shift of weight as the water swishes around to the other side. This is the main problem with water hoops.

Hey, it's me again (from France^^) I couldn't answer earlier thant now but I have a question. Actually I don't get it: I thought you said PVC was too light for hooping and PE was way better for many reasons. But in your previous comment, you mention PVC as the best for a beginner :/ I allow myself to ask the question because you wrote it in French so I thought maybe I didn't get the correct idea. Well anyway, thank you for taking the time to answer. Cheers from Paris!

Hey! I live in Paris and I really enjoy watching your videos. I am about to buy my first hoop but I have to translate every measurement and equipment: is PER (polyethylene) the same as PE? And also, I was wondering if I can start using one and only hoop to work "body-on" and "body-off" (especially concerning the isolations) Thank you very much for your answer and sorry if my English isn't correct enough^^

Hi, I love your tutorials I just got my frist hoop yesterday and I'm eager to learn tricks!!! I have a bit of a predicament so I was wondering if you could help me out! I have a 42 inch 3/4 PSI hoop. I got the hang of hooping really quickly and I want to learn isolations and off body tricks. I tried hand lasso tricks and isolations but the hoop is really wide and heavy and my hand is bruised just from rolling it across my hands. What type and size hoop do you recommend I get? Thanks SO MUCH!

Right now I have a 160 PSi hoop at 38" and I've found it to be both too large and too heavy for me. I actually began learning on one of the Walmart hoops and I was able to learn tricks like the Elevator, and Vortex on it. I then moved to the hoop I have now. But now I'd like to purchase another hoop, but far lighter and a bit smaller. I'm just worried about getting a hoop to small and light for my skill level. Would you recommend just moving to a 100 PSi 36" hoop or to a Poly-Pro hoop?
@MoonShadow492
@MoonShadow492 12 жыл бұрын
really? I think the water makes it easier. The hoops are pretty heavy with the water in th, which did hurt a bit when I first started hooping. I've noticed though, that the hoop starts by going very slowly and then once it gains momentum, it goes much faster. It's also impossible to do isolations with the water hoops. And if you take the water out, the hoop is much too light for a beginner to use.

You give wonderful advice. I am 5' 1" and 110 pounds. I was looking into getting a 38" hoop (which is right above my belly button about an inch). You said you recommend 100 psi because 160 is quite heavy. I can hoop well around my waist and walk while hooping as well, I just want to begin tricks. Since you have been hooping for a while now, what brand/type (collapsible/non-collapsible/etc.) do you PERSONALLY recommend. Also, I am looking to dance hoop, not just around the waist hoop.

I bought 160psi, given that I have literally tried to hoop my whole life and NEVER could. Got that bad boy home, lined her up and hauled it out in my first attempt. I giggled like a freakin school girl. No tricks given the cold outside, but once the weather warms up and I'm more confident, I'm going to try that Hoopnautica one you have. Love it. :)

So it's better to have a heavier hoop i'm a beginner? Cus i've been looking at hoops online, and i can't really decide between two hoops. They're basically the same, only one is 1.2 kg, and the other is 1.5 kg. But it says that the heavier hoop is for level two hoopers, and the lighter one is for beginners. What should i do now?

@gemgen101 Yeah. PSI hoops and Astral and a couple other places are pricey. If you're looking not to spend too much go straight on over to MoodHoops. They're amazingly priced (start at $69 before shipping) and they have some great designs. Plus they're quick since most designs are premade. I've got one and love it. My first one I got was custom and I had to wait like 7 or 8 weeks for it. My MoodHoop I got within about a week. Another I'd recommend for a basic hoop (one color) is SuperHooper.

@gemgen101 Oooh, what kind are you looking at? I have a custom LED from Cosmic Hooper and a Candy from MoodHoops. I'll probably get one or two more MoodHoops at some point so I can multihoop with hoops that are the same size/weight, as well as some LED minis from them, but eventually I want to invest in a Phoenix Hoop from Hoop Daddy or an Atomic Hoop from Astral. They're $300-$350 but they're amazing.

no worries. Its still better than water hoops, sanded hoops, or weighted hoops. Just watch the hair and if something comes apart & they don't accept returns then super glue it because aside from it yanking hair, rattling, & being wonky ( i personally didn't mind the last one) it's a decent hoop. this again is the hoopnotica travel hoops. I'm assuming they've changed the way they make it because they change it by the time i bought it a year ago. It's due for an upgrade :D

if you can do the duck out (so hoop on your waist and then, at the right moment, bend down from the waist so the hoop goes off your body and towards ur hand so when you stand back up the hoop is off ur waist & outside for off body stuff) then you're ready for a ploy pro. poly pros are so light & fast that you have to know how to do a trick properly or else it could smack you in the face. I'd recommend a 100 36" PSI. i use that still to practice new tricks anyway. it's may 1 of my fav hoops too.
@gemgen101
@gemgen101 12 жыл бұрын
not a poly pro. I mean sure, if you have the money then get it but you'll be wasiting your money if you don't know what size you work best in and if you don't know how to work with the lightness. For sure, get a 100 PSI and try a 37. the weight change and size change will help a lot. a 36 100 psi is pretty light as well which is why it's the 2nd hoop i use the most (first is poly pro) but i guess that's because i like how light it is and i can handle it. Whatever you think your ready for really

u don't HAVE to but i recommend it because most people feel they dont have the right weight in their 1st or even 4th hoop so they go heavier or lighter, give up, or get an LED which is also a big no-no (at least in my opinion since most beginners tend to give up on the hard LEDs anyway). it also help you know what hoopers are like in person. thats the only thing i've been close to as far as hoopers learning in almost 2 years since there R no classes close by me either. but U can also live w/o it
@gemgen101
@gemgen101 11 жыл бұрын
heavier hoops means slower rotation so you can pick up tricks faster if you have more time to prepare for the trick ( the slower rotation) but they might say lighter because it doesn't bruise since it's lighter. heavier is for learning basics tricks (waist, hips thighs,shoulders, chest, corckscrews, halo, weaving, lift up & down) which are extremely important to learn before anything else. i'd recommend the big one heavy one and then the lighter one for later on
@gemgen101
@gemgen101 11 жыл бұрын
but in the mean time, take the water out of your hoop ( they're only what, $8 so it's not a big loss) and then tape 1 battery to the hoop (like attaching a go pro) and see if you can handel tricks with the uneven weight. When you're comfortable with that then add 4-8 more batteries along the hoop to even the weight. If you can handel that then you can get a super light hoop and maybe even an LED. Try that OR just get another normal hoop ( you and ur friends will use it a lot if u get a hoop)
@gemgen101
@gemgen101 11 жыл бұрын
how big is the hoop from the ground up? and how light is it? wave hoops can be confusing since they're heavy but at the same time they're not. If i were you, i'd get 1 somewhat beginner hoop so 38", 37". beginner is like 39"-42". That way you'll always have a practice hoop for a beginner. This will help you get more friends to start hooping on the beginner hoop. If you can control the weight & you realize you've already built muscle memory then you can get a beginner intermediate (36", 35", 34")

i have a video all about where to buy them and the websites and stores. there are no physical places to buy hoops unless they sell them @ your local hooping class thus most hoops will be online. Unityhoops is a good place and the website Etsy is good as well. Some shops to look for on etsy that I can remember are hoopmamas, featherhoops, & citivacreations. Don't recommend hoops from hoopnotica though. & DO NOT get LED hoops. They're not designed for beginners despite coming in "beginner sizes"

depends on what your goal is. If it is to fire hoop, LED hoop, or get better no matter what hoop you use, get a normal 100PSI 3/4 hoop that is 36". That is an intermediate hoop. You can get away doing fast or double hooping with the light hoops so you can go to poly pro but you really need to practice with a light big normal hoop since it'll help prepare u for other hoop things you want to try. Water hoops are only good for so long.They don't work that well with body rolls & it's slower workout

For PSI explanation I wrote one under Milica Trajkovic's question. The psi is relative to the material as well, as the same outer diameter , inner diameter tube will handle different psi depending on if it's vinyl, pvc, rubber.....

it means pounds per square inch of water the type of tubing can hold. Tubing cames in many different types of plastic material (PP/poly pro, PE, PVC, , HDPE, LHDPE) so the PSI will feel different for each material but it's all the same concept

most hoops for hoop dance aren't more than 2.5 inches in fact i've never heard of a 2.5 inch hoop. I've only heard of 1 inch. That might be a start. I don't know the weight beginners hoops are suppose to feel but for some reason, 3.1 pounds sounds off. Sounds like you got a weighted hoop which is great for exercise on the hips alone. If you want to do more than that, go to etsy and look up hoop dance hoops. just type in hula hoops and looks for the cheapest most simplest hoop.

my review is negative. i like how there are 6 peices so you can go from a beginner to advance with 6 or 5 segments but after 1-2 weeks the hoop will start 2 fail meaning the screws will start 2 come off or it just full on snap or break & from the start it will also start to squeak. the screws are a giant problem because when they start to loosen as you hoop and u bring it above your head and down , your hair will get caught in it (even in a pony tail) and it'll rip your hair. weight is also bad

I have a whole video about it. These are just A FEW of the many I mention in there. unityhoops, trinitystarr (met him in person, he's really down to earth and his hoops are great), and on the etsy website there are shops like featherhoops, citivacreationz, hoopmamas, innercirclehoops, harmonichoops, dance hoops and tons more as long as you search hoops. there's more on my video but just dont buy a hoop from toysrus , walmart, target, or anything like that

Target and toys R us have been bugging me lately with their hoops. All of those stores sell hoops that have water in it. It's incredibly hard to hoop with them, even for me. I always look at those hoops and scoff. They've been there for a few months now. So it's probably the hoop, not you.

you can however you might find the hoop doesn't stay where you want it too for a long time. my first hoop was a non taped hoop but i realized the lack of grip made tricks hard to do so i put painters tape on it in the mean time just so i could practice

i have a 36" 100 PSI hoop that was 3/4 inch thickness which was pretty light, lighter than my other hoops for reason. If you want to move faster then get a size smaller with PSI hoop. If you want to move more as in bigger movements then get a bigger hoop . If you what to go fast and get a good work out and move a lot (good cardio) then get a poly pro. They're very fast because they are light and so they react quickly meaning you're right into your next move in no time

i got mine from my local gardening store like Ace hardware & Osh. i know there are a few places you can buy tape online but double check on the shipping and how much you get because the shipping was more expensive than the tape when i wanted to order to if you want to get tape, make sure you get a lot so the shipping is worth it

as requested there is a hooping video of me with a glow in the dark hoop on my homepage now. the video was super dark and you couldn't see anything so i adjusted it so you at least see an outline of what I'm doing but unfortunately the hoop wasn't glowing as much. trust me though, when the glow tape is charged its is honestly a nightlight when u turn the lights out b/c its so bright. I live in a dorm now so the room lights are fluorescent but y can use sun or simply a bright light to charge it

Hey +musicminer02 ! love music? WHat is your favorite? and to answer your question, hula hooping is really easy so anyone any age can learn. Because it is a low impact activity, it is easy to take up, even if you are pregnant or coming back from surgery. DIfferent sizes and weights are going to do different things. If you want to practice is secret, you can always get a Trinitystar collapsible hoop or a Unityhoops collapsible hoop. I have a video on different types of hula hoops as well. Hope they help and I hope you enjoy hooping!

i have no idea what does PSI mean so it would be great if you could explain it in pounds or kilograms... i still dont know how heavy to pick, after watching this video.
@glenn2595

The psi is not the best system for weight description for a hula hoop as you are not running water or gas through it and building up pressure. All it really means is if the ring diameter is the same, the outside diameter of the tubing is the same, and the material is the same, for instance 40" hoop, 3/4" tube, vinyl, than a 160 PSI will have a smaller inner diameter, therefore a thicker wall, than a 100 PSI tube because it can handle a higher water pressure. A thicker wall means more material and that material weights more than the air in the tube/hoop and the hoops overall weight will be greater in a higher PSI tube. You are not using the hoop for an irrigation system on your farm, you are just spinning it on your body, so why use PSI in the first place? I guess for convience or maybe the tube maufacture sells it for other applications as well and a hula hoop was a secondary thought. For a hoop you need to know diameter of the hoop, outer diameter of the hoop's tubing, and over all weight. If buying sections it would be nice to know the weight per section, which is more useful than a PSI rating. Inside diameter is only important when making your own and gettnig proper connectors.

Milica Trajkovic PSI is "pounds per square inch". It's a measure of the density of the material which changes the weight. All else being equal (hoop diameter and thickness) a hoop of denser material (higher PSI) will weigh more than one with less dense material/lower PSI.

Glenn Conner 100% agree. PSI is a weird way to measure weight for something like this.

Danielle Ortiz beginner hoops of 100PSI 3/4 and PE material are good beginner hoops if you want to eventually use them for tricks. but size also has an indication of how much momentum you're going to have to force for tricks to work and how heavy the hoop is overall. As soon as the hoop is moving, it is not as heavy, but the heavier it is, the harder it will be on your wrist for any non-beginner, off-body move. If you are bruising and want to dance faster without hurting yourself, it's time for a smaller hoop. Featherhoops on etsy is good. hoopmamas is good too, just a mass production of fancy tape on tubing you can find at your basic hardware store for a hoop you can make at your own home. I mention featherhoops because they use a different material of tubing and i'm not sure even they know what it is.
