Hi Dave great video as usual. Are the piezoelectric injectors polarity sensitive? Does it matter which way you connect the megger tester?

Yes u need to get the polarity correct on the piezo type. I shud have mentioned that. Great question

Hello Dave...Nice wee demo. I know next to nuthin about diesel so that was interesting for me. The terminology wont be right in my question. But what is typical "lift" of the injector pintle say for a 2 litre diesel, understood it would likely vary with RPM & Load. But are we talkin a few thou ?...Does solenoid/piezo just actuate a needle valve to port pilot pressure to lift the pintle proper? Sorry too many questions...Cheers Pal

a wee bit more info, ian. The piezo needle may not actuate the injector pintle directly. The two are hydraulically connected which exaggerates the movement of the injector opening. there could be maybe 400 piezos in the stack and need a few hundred volts to excite. altho, as you saw from the vid, the designs are varied nowadays. also ive read the voltage the piezo creates is read back to the ecu to learn injector opening lift in some cases. thought i give u a bit more, cheers dave

nice video Dave. does a piezo injector have to have the current reversed to turn it off? We are told never to unplug them whilst running as it could flood the cylinder if switched off whilst they are injecting (open)

hey steve, yes there is truth to this, the stack stays expanded after energising. I found that shorting it out will collapse it as it acts as (or is) a capacitor. This is a good question as i believe the piezo's capacitance could be used as a means of testing. I intend to follow this up in the future when i get some known goods.

A megger tester produces ac voltage, the operation voltage of piezo activator is dc, polarity is important. Try a positive square wave and you will find the it will work(perhaps).

This insulation resistance tester outputs DC as does every other one ive came across and I've got one that goes up to 30kv

You are correct, modern insulation testers do produce continuous DC, but the problem is in the current they provide i.e. 2mA as the Actuator requires ~ 8A, that is max. , average through through 0.4 mS is about 4A and that is why they have small cables. Would like to hear your view on the matter. R

Hello Dave, this VDO solenoid is burst. On Unit-t device, at 100V, the reading should be 19Mohm and around 106volts. Yours show 0 reading which means the solenoid is gone.

Hi Dave. Sorry to post on here but not sure where to ask.i have a megger mit that only has 250v and 500v setting.is it ok to use the 250v setting to test piezo injectors while still on car. Does polarity make any difference when testing across both pins of the injector while still on car ? If so which way should the leads red and black go to the pins ?Cheers. P.s have asked about but not found the answer.Thanks for the uploads very informative.

100volts is the normal test voltage. Any higher and you risk damaging the injector, also the polarity is important. See some of the other comments for the bosch instructions

I'm confused about these bosch solenoid fuel injectors for actuating these injectors. I know hooking up a car battery to one will fry it. Also car voltage is only 12 volts so there's no 100, 200.volts

The 100volts is a back emf generated by the coil in the solenoid
