Things have changed a little, when I got my private certification in 1986 a third class medical had to be renewed every 24 months, a second class every 12 months, and a first class medical had a renewal of every 6 months.

I know its a 1 year old video, but when it comes to medical certification, if you fart wrong and you tell that to the medical examiner, they will yank your certificate. Many times over the years I've heard the saying "if you wanna fly, you gotta lie". FAA really stands for= Forget About Aviation.

It can be scary even for a young person in shape. Kinda crazy our whole career hangs on that one piece of paper. Cheers to many more years of passing it with no problem all.

Usually after 40 your eyes start to change. The change starts when you begin to start to squint when trying to read and you get headaches reading a book. I started to squint to read signs in a distance too and I had what you call floaters. My eyes were perfect until 41 and every year now I have to get new glasses for distance and reading because my eyes change every year. I think a stress EKG should be required for every physical.

In Europe, EASA has a BMI limitation - in excess of 35 requires additional testing and costs. The BMI is claptrap/BS from the 18th century and has never been adjusted for modern lifestyles. It favours medical insurance companies and their premiums. Typically, only the UK CAA follows the BMI requirement to the letter. Other AME/aero medical examiners in Europe use their discretion.

Thank you again for sharing this about Captains and First Officers flying. There are Pursers and Flight Attendants that are flying as well. Both sets of the crew groups do for the most part try very hard to keep fit. For me the long walks three many big great airports is a good work out. And there are some great restaurants and cafes to always have something to eat. Thanks again.

Great vlog as always! When I started flying in 1993. I did get a 2nd class med. I do not remember what the first class was all about, the difference. In Norway a barely got a PPL med with dayflying only due to the fact that I am colorblind.

Due to a past medical issue, I have to have a stress test and EKG every year just to get a 3rd class certificate. The issue was 25 years ago with no symptoms since. It doesn't matter to them. I'm thinking Basic Med might be the route for me. I can still fly my Bonanza, but just can't go above 18,000', and I believe the Basic Med is good for 4 years. I'll have to double check that part.

Got to be stressful. I had similar, but probably a bit less stringent in many cases, requirements during a career in federal law enforcement.

I haven't flown since the 80's and back then it was 6 months, 1 year and 2 years for 1st. 2nd. and 3rd. class. When he said 3 years and 5 years I thought wow, that's quite a change.

I lost mine 10 years ago. Havent flown but once since and that was in the back of the commercial aeroplane. I have high bp that is well controlled and its not an issue but apparently the powers that be dont like the fact I am on Morphine, oxycodone, neurontin and a few other things after a spine injury and 7 surgeries. I dont understand why They dont want me kickin the tires and lighting the fires any more. Think how much fun it would be but that darn examiner says no way. Party pooper. And since it was not an on the job injury I now enjoy the benifits of living on social security. Yes, all great fun. So, for 10+ years no flying for me. Its to the point now that even if I was able to somehow get my medical back I cant afford to get current again. It was sure fun though. Poking holes in the sky is a great stress reliever when it was for fun, just me and the airplane. Spins, loops, hammerheads, or just watching the elk and deer in the snow.....yep great fun.

What restrictions (besides needing glasses) could be placed on your Medical Certificate without forcing you to restrict your flying?
@bruce2357
@bruce2357 3 жыл бұрын
Just guessing that a hearing aid might be another restriction. One thing I don't know is what happens if you can't pass the color blindness test. I always passed and I know that they now have glasses that help people who don't see colors as well as they should.

It’s not necessarily the case that a third class medical holder is only out to have fun and poke holes in the sky, though that can be part of it. I am a private pilot with a third class medical, have been for 39 years. But probably 75% of my flying is on business for my company. I’m not paid to fly as a commercial pilot it’s just the best tool to get me from here to there. This week, for example, on Monday I flew from Long Beach, California to a very small airport at Athens, Texas, and then today I flew up to another small airport at Findlay, Ohio. tomorrow I will fly back to Long Beach California, my homebase. This is purely for business purposes, but is a part 91 operation and I’m not required to have anything more than a third class medical. that said, at the ripe old age of 66, I am starting the process of acquiring my commercial certificate. No particular business reason, just a hill I would like to climb. And of course, that will entail a second class medical.

Ekg looks at the electrical activity in the conduction system of the heart from 12 different angles. It can pinpoint conduction defecits and even show the location of a myocardial infarction (heart attack). You did baseline, next time they will compare for changes.

I see you are sporting a beard these days. Is there a restriction for facial hair given the fact that you might have to wear an oxygen mask in the event of a cabin depressurization? Facial hair around the area where the oxygen mask contacts your face/head might keep the mask from sealing.
