The thing about this show that irked me growing up around mechanics was that they never did mechanical work on the car. Some of these cars needed serious work, and none of that stuff got actually done. Ever. And I've heard that some of the really expensive things that they added to the cars got removed. As in, they didn't even get to keep the super expensive junk they put on the car.
@fosty.2 жыл бұрын
A lot of it probably fucked the car even more because of the drain on the battery.

Yea having researched a lot on this show, it was often the case that’d it take super long wait time to get there car back. Pretty clear that pimp my ride cars were super low on the priority list at West coast customs (WCC). Sounds like the WCC crew was overworked and underpaid due to all the labor penalties they got hit with and I’m sure just wanted to get it out the door.

As an automotive technician, more cars get welded together than you think. Shady body shops do it all the time, taking two wrecked cars and creating a "good" more expensive car with a good title. It's dangerous for sure, but far from unheard of. Stay safe folks, be careful of what you buy.

On the show, they actually would often replace the car with a matching model that was in better mechanical shape than the one brought in by the owner. So one of the most important things to know about my Pimp My Ride is that a lot of the cosmetic changes would be taken off after the show periof course they would still leave the paint job but I'm talking about all the TV screens that they put in the cars during the early seasons of the show. They would also take the rims off the car and put the original rims on the car. There was a minivan with a waterfall installed inside of it and they took the whole waterfall mechanism out of the car after the they gave the car back to the guy. You have to remember that this is the show that literally made a car with TV screens in the mud flaps. By the way they don't do any mechanical stuff so they don't fix your engine they don't fix your suspension they don't fix your diffecentral which means you're piece of s*** car is now a shiny piece of s*** car except for like the 1 or 2 times I can think of that they just straight up replace the entire car

But i bought it for $8,000 over 7 years ago and the only maintenance I've had to do is changing the a few of the tires, replacing the air filter, and changing a tail light. I can fill my gas tank for about $30 from empty. It is the most reliable and durable car I've ever owned and I will never stop screaming its praises.

I remember my dad telling me that back in the 90s the whole combining 2 cars into one is more common than we thought. However they were done more seamlessly an the car would get a new paint job to hide it. It's illegal of course, these was done without the buyer's knowledge and most of them usually only finds out about it when they tried to sell their cars and they end up only being able to sell it for scraps.

I mean you say that his car is going to get stolen from but what you don't know is that actually every piece of sound equipment and all the playstations and DVD players and even the screens themselves are all removed from the vehicle as soon as they're done shooting. Sometimes the modifications made to the body to assist in the placement of these devices is so superficial that it actually makes them undrivable. So not only do you not get any of the cool shit but often they would leave these vehicles as illegal to operate under normal circumstances. Basically they take someone's car that looks a little shitty and turn it into a literal piece of garbage that they then have to have hauled away. It was pretty fucked up.

They actually replaced multiple cars on the show with one similar, but not tell the audience.

I wonder what happened to that particular car. From watching a few videos, it seems like every vehicle that was on PMR ended up having a wild ass story to go with them after the show

It was fun for a while, but once you realized that.... they rented or used studio owned houses because the didnt want X running down public roads. they never fixed any of the cars problems .... always makes the cars and their owners look like complete trash .... and worst of all, after they turned of the camera, they ripped everything out of the car that was of any value..... so basically, the episode finished and they you had the same old shi**y car, but now in pink or green .... one of the worst fake shows

I watched some of this show as a kid, and I remember being mad that they didn't just fix the car. I was so genuinely worried the client would hate their car bc they didn't ask for all of the cosmetic stuff. What if they didn't like the screens and colors? 🤣
@mrtalos2 жыл бұрын
That first car is 100% illegal in the UK. Two cars welded together is classed as not only unsafe, but actively dangerous. Does the US even have checks on the cars road worthiness?
@mechanomics26492 жыл бұрын
Depends on the state, and even then not all states that check "road worthiness" are the same. For some, checking whether or not they're road worthy amounts to making sure the tail lights, head lights, and turn signals functioned, and that there is a certain amount of tread on the tire.

"Overhaulin" was a show that came on around the same time as "Pimp My Ride" but on TLC, me and my dad love that show the most because the upgrades that they did were tasteful and they actually worked on the car's internals

It’s actually pretty common to cut a car in half, ship it, and weld the body back together… Depending on the skill of the welder, the new frame can be as strong or stronger than the original!

How many people just sold the car and bought a different car after they were given back the original car? I have to imagine most.
@newtman16322 жыл бұрын
Fun fact most of the “pimped” rides would have the modifications removed, as well as significant mechanical damage from said modifications making nearly every car on the show undrivable not long after the episodes ended. All in all most people on the show were worse off afterwards.

I remember watching an episode where this guy who was a mechanic or wanted to be a mechanic, brought in his beat up pick up truck, and they literally did nothing to it and presented it to him still the exact same way he gave it to them as a joke but ended up getting him a brand new Ford pick up or something

You should try and find the people in the video and see how things went after the cameras were gone. Like how long he kept the vehicle, what issues he had with it.

This kid actually got the best deal because he got a new car lmao. The other people just had their cars souped up, but didn’t actually fix the mechanical issues, so they still had a POS
