I have a 06 Commander with the Hemi. I had this exact same issue, limp mode, dash lit up with all the error messages and idiot lights. Mine didn’t fail as consistently as the one you worked on but symptoms were exactly the same. The dealer replaced PCM and TCM but eventually the problem returned. For me the solutions was a new shift module. I found the answer on a forum. I changed it out and never had the issue again and it’s been 7 yrs now and about 80,000 miles. My Commander has 230,000 miles and I’m the original owner.

My electrical code disaster that threw all kinds of codes that had nothing to do with the codes it was giving me, ended up being 3-6 melted/fused wires under the second row of seats. There is a harness that runs under the carpet from left to right of the truck. The harness is unprotected and sits on the metal floor pan under the carpet. Also this is where people step on the floor. The muffler is directly under those wires and melts them and also discolors the floor pan and burns the rug, could set the truck on fire. When touching the melted wires the Jeep came back to life, and all warning lights off. I wiggled them more and the truck died wiggle again and back to normal. This issue could also be the crank no start problem. This is definitely one place to look if all else fails, and it’s also good to look at to see if anything is going to burn up the truck. This should be a safety recall, because it’s dangerous.

"It's inconsistent." Not entirely, Ivan! This is Keith's famous "heat and vibration" on a much, much smaller scale than we usually deal with. Any PCB/Electronics engineers are welcome to chime in and correct me, but it's my understanding that this is a transistor failure mode. While ambient temperature plays a roll, I think what we're seeing here is internal thermal loading causing the transistor to fail gently (rather than cratering) each time it's loaded, and recover just enough to almost function once it's turned off. I have a feeling there's a lot more to it than that, but my limited familiarity with PCB-level component function leaves me not wanting to speculate too much beyond that. Hope you had a wonderful 4th, Ivan!

I was trying to help a guy the other day that broke down at the apartment complex that I live at I know start with a crank first place with LED to was fuel and Guy kept trying to jump around from place to place to place unlike trying to find one logical Pathway to go through I wanted to test the fuel pump was a Volkswagen with no Schrader valve so went back to the tank try to do some electrical testing and the guy still wanted to jump around took I finally walked away then the next day I came out told him I read an article to how to exactly test his make model and year ran the tests had a bad fuel pump had an open circuit inside the pump itself and the guy wouldn't listen spent another two days before he had it towed away to a shop I was laughing inside... Because I really appreciate your methodical method of trying to find a problem and targeting in on it and then proving or disproving the thought pattern versus just jumping left and right and right and left and center and up and down..... even right now I'm trying to help a guy at work whose Honda has broken down most likely has a fuel pump or primary relay that's gone bad he had it all torn apart I told him don't touch it let me take a look at it and the idiot puts it all back together again gets to run for 20 minutes and then it doesn't work anymore I told him how do you expect me to diagnose something that works.. . Course now that it's broke again maybe I can help him tomorrow who knows

Ivan -- the major outstanding question: Why was the driver output oscillating? About 5V amplitude, about 17kHz. After looking at the (very disjointed) schematics on BBB, it looks like this relay (plus light bulb if you had that attached) is the major +supply load for the TCM (because all the other loads it's switching to ground). So this symptom could well be what you would get if the TCM module had a poor connection (ie: high resistance) in the plus supply line to the module. Initially on power up, you get enough current to charge the local reservoir capacitors in the module to a voltage high enough for the module's electronics to come alive. That turns on the (high side) driver for the Transmission Control relay. That causes a sharp increased current drain on the TCM, and due to (hypothesized) poor plus supply, drains the module's reservoir caps, decreasing the local V+ below the level required to keep the electronics alive. So that turns off the relay driver, decreasing the load on the local V+, allowing the input current to charge up the local reservoir caps. And so on, creating an oscillation.And poor V+ supply for the TCM pretty much matches the codes: P0882 (Low TCM power voltage) and P0884 (Intermittent TCM power).

Back in the early 70s when I started working on medical electronics I would find many failed logic IC chips that had wave patterns like the one on that driver. That was with the first gen of TTL chips. Many times the oscillations would cause the chip to heat up and you could find the bad chip just by touching the IC. Everything was component level repairs then. Interesting case study, good entertainment for me on the 4th of July.

I had one on a bit older model that was throwing a solenoid code and some codes you had.. Long story short the tcm was faulty, but what i found was the same tcm power relay would shut down after key on cycle due to the module would go into limp mode. Swapped two solenoid pins and retested and it showed the same codes which meant the tcm was faulty not any one solenoid.But before all of that i was condemning it for it not keeping the relay powered on. Wanted to share due to i know thats not the only reason the relay will shut down. Thanks for the video and GREAT diag!!

Second time watching and a flash back to 30 some years ago. There is a special type of solenoid called a "variable force" solenoid. It is used to control pressure over a certain range (like line pressure). The benefit is that the current driving the solenoid is directly proportional to the pressure. No pressure sensor is required for feed back ! The problem is, it requires a "high side" driver. Maybe this is why they are using the high side driver, but, back in my day, that solenoid could draw 1A.

Thats a great catch! Always bothersome when you get your leads where you need them to catch the car acting up but then the car decides it wants to be "normal", Almost seems to happen everytime haha. After watching this I really need to save my pennies and get ahold of a pico! Also, I feel bad for that transmission if they keep driving it while it gets stuck in 3rd gear. I can see that causing more problems down the road. If they are already tight for money I would think it's cheaper to fix the PCM then having to replace the trans for being burned out because of not fixing PCM..

It makes me wonder if the PCM has a way to monitor current draw on that relay control circuit. Because this is a high-side driver, is it possible that there is an intermittent short-to ground on the relay control circuit? That would be why the PCM would shut the driver off so quickly under the shorted condition. Normally, relays use a low-side driver where the ground is supplied to the relay control circuit. In that design, if the control side to the PCM is grounded, the relay simply stays energized all the time and no damage occurs to the driver. However, on high-side drivers, a short-to-ground on the circuit will obviously burn out the driver if it occurs, so a safety method has to be employed. I'm giving Chrysler the benefit of the doubt here, assuming that they'd design a way to protect their PCMs from failure.
@mikeyp916

Just got to "Double Bonus Footage" I like the thought of a bad TCM, however some possibilities other than a TCM came to mind. Could be a relay with the wrong coil resistance. once the relay heats up some, the resistance will increase and all will be well. another possibility is the relay control is powered by a QDM inside the PCM and another circuit on the quad driver is overloaded causing the driver to shut off for circuit protection. curious to see if a box will fix it! edit: just got to the part where you mentioned the heat kills it. eliminates the relay theory. although on 2nd though i guess when we swapped relays that got eliminated.

A Mitsubishi Triton diesel on Wednesday delivered to the workshop on a trailer by a used car sales company for warranty work, the customer complaint was relayed to us that the car chugged and blew smoke on a cold startup and then the auto transmission wouldn't change gears (limp mode) and engine ABS and traction control lights were on. Did the usual of checking all the fuses etc, basics first. Scanned the vehicle and found multiple CAN comms codes on multiple modules, it took me 5 minutes to figure out that the TCM was missing from the picture. I did the same thing as you and went down the same path of chasing CAN bus faults and wasted some time in chasing a fault that wasn't there, then I went back to basics and checked for power and ground at the TCM, bingo! nada! No power at the TCM..... Only then was it that I got the power distribution wiring diagram and traced back from the TCM to find the TCM fuse was not there, missing in action, a hole where it should be, the TCM fuse had been physically removed! Although I did a sweep of all the fuses with my test light I didn't test the fuse that wasn't there, lol. Fit the fuse, hear the relay click, dash lights all out. I am still wondering why the fuse was removed..... at the end of the day I had to go back to my customer (the used car sales company) and tell them my findings and give them a bill for the diagnosis given the complaint that was presented, and, that it was between them and their customer (the buyer) to battle it out on who was going to pay the bill. At the end of the day it was @ a $500 fuse fitment!

Picking a nit ... "High side" drivers (an output that sources power) in an control module are unusual (high cost, lower reliability). Any EE who is told to design a high side output would use a driver chip that has built in protection from excessive loads. It is not at all surprising that the driver shutdown when a 1A load was placed on the circuit (normal relay load is less than 250mA), so I would call that test invalid. However, you did catch the problem with just the relay as the load. I am very glad you physically inspected that ground point. It common on FCA vehicles, when many circuits use the same ground point that one or more of the wire would fail.

My commander limp mode problem was in the shifter. It has a roller that determines which gear the trans should go in but the roller contaminates the path between the selector confusing the modules by connecting more than one gear. I disassembled the selector and took a q tip and brake kleen and cleaned between the contacts for gear selection and no more problems. May have nothing to do with this issue just something too think about and stick in the back of your mind for later.

relays on back of junction box MUST be sequentially carved relays and installed at manufacture (we think its because of either relay timing or they are synced some how)and you MUST replace entire junction box not just relays. The 4.7 is trash! We have the first gen 206 5.7 limited lifted on 35's My husband downloaded the complete manufactures service and repair manual. ITS SAYS IT PLAIN AS DAY! RESEARCH IS KEY. the intermittent problem is, the relays not syncing on time sometime. or wearing out. Also my husband says. Its is either a rip off game or ignorance, that mechanics can not work on a Chrysler/jeep/DODGE so many of the parts are cross platform. They cover many years. The trick is matching features on replacement, some parts have 6-7 part numbers, due to so many displacements and features (engine size and fancy electronics) Variance depends on manufacture date, assembly plant and vin. Once you have all the info which is found on the bottom of each page of the repair manual. the repairs are a snap. my husband is an ex navy mechanic but is a salesman and has been for 13 years.

I know I'm a year late, but this seems very similar to the problem I had 4 years ago with a 99 Dakota, but mine was with the ECM part of the PCM. Mine would just die on a hot day and I had the typical no 5v at the TPS. As close as I can figure there are problems with the 7805 +5v voltage regulators inside the PCM. There are several 7805s in the PCM, each one provides power to several sensors. Each 7805 voltage regulators can each only supply so much current before it shuts down from thermal overload. Heat (a hot day, or hot engine compartment) can exacerbate the problem. Over current could be caused by a short on a sensor or the 5v itself but the resistors on the PCM output signals should limit the current.. I suspect the 7805's are running close to their current limit (too much load/bad design??), and degrade over time with heat and thermal cycling. There are people who repair these PCM's for a fee, but that cost was more than taking a chance on a used one. I replaced my PCM with a used one from a boneyard for $100 and everything works fine (until it doesn't). The PCM program code.label must match the vehicle model. I didn't reprogram it for my VIN, but I don't have to pass emissions either. Mine got worse over time and died 2x while driving to the boneyard to pick up the replacement. It's not very fun to diagnose these types of problems when they only happen on a hot day in July-August.

I'm thinking a bad solder connection on the board at the driver transistor. You maybe could have done an Ivan fix. I've done a few on my cars.

There was a recall on some of the Jeep PCMs and others have hacked them with board re-solder and cleaning pins. Somewhat pathetic that car companies can't upscale their wiring harness, plugs and connectors and components to a standard that will last at least the life of the car undercarriage. I'm currently having to disassemble the entire front end grill and headlights of a family members car just to get to some degraded loose wiring and bad grounds.

Why would they make them last? That cuts into sales of your new cars on the lot. Because you would be surprised at how many people just get rid of their cars when it has an issue like this, and they just go buy a new one. A lot of people buy new cars every 2 or 3 years anyway-- so they don't really care for them to last 20 years. It's sad, but: them being built "just good enough" to work for awhile is part of the design/ classic planned obsolescence.

A little off topic... Silhouette case. (Proud owner of 2... a 93 (pasturized (sitting in the pasture)) & a 99. Both same color as yours) Found some magic stuff you may not know of or have not thought about. Add some ATP corporation AT205 Reseal polymer (maybe get it at Carquest or order it on Amazon) to the Silhouette trans fluid to soften and rejuvenate that seal in the trans causing it to not engage in cold weather. This is the closest to a magic polymer rubber rejuvenator as anything out there. Can't hurt. (Scotty)You tube mechanic claims to have gotten a letter from someone that used this stuff in his engine oil and it stopped a rear main leak in 2 days. Can't hurt to try it.

Hey Ivan, Wy didnt you do it phad style and put a separate relay in to power up the tcm relay?
@Airman..
@Airman.. 5 жыл бұрын
I'd bypass the relay control and feed 12v to the tcm feed/output this should trigger a fault if the tcm detected voltage on the output wire while it should not (sleep mode) it's programmed that way but this should get you enough evidence to condemn the control side

Seems like whatever is cooking the PCM has put that driver circuit ride on the edge of its thermal protection. It comes on and that little bit of extra cause the thermal cut out to kick in. Off, it cools, and starts working again. May or may not be what is cooking the PCM, but one suspects that PCM is going to have more problems.

What would really change Ivan is if he went through the American Marine Corp. Not a good thing but his little indecisive laugh would be GONZO. But our Marines make you into the man they want, not the person you were. He would become very decisive and maybe a wife beater or something so he probably is better with his indecisive chuckle. The only reason I mention this is how the Marines treat the GOAT during basic as an object lesson of what not to be.
