Like the old v-belt design, it is designed to run on the sides. If the sides of v-belt wear down, it begins to slip. Serpentine belts are a great improvement because now it incorporates multiple V's for grip. Another great improvement is the fuel injection in today's cars, eliminating vapor lock, because of higher fuel pressure, which increases boiling temp of the fuel

I just recently learned something interesting about serpentine belts. I'm not going to claim it to be true of all belts, but I do think there is a basic standard of classification between these belts and the relationship to the "Item Number". Belts are classified I am sure by many different parameters designating length, width, number of notch-v's in the belt, etc. I was recently introduced to a problem where the person replacing the belt used a belt that was "2 Numbers" different from the original. So happens, those two numbers were length. They replaced a 17" belt with a 19" belt. Like a part number A-17YP5 ... with an A-19YP5... Close enough I guess.... I chased that issue for 6 or 7 years.... caused just such an intermittent problem.... beyond belief.... RULE: Replace by Manufactures PN, not by stamp on bad part.

I've NEVER seen a serpentine belt slip like that before either. Usually, it's a bad tensioner or a broken harmonic balancer. That's what I was expecting you to find wrong. I've even seen a few instances where the crank pulley bolt had come loose on those VW VR6 engines, letting the pulley slip on the end of the crankshaft.

It's a lot easier to change out a serpentine belt when you don't have to work around underbody shielding. It's not too bad where they're fastened with the plastic pop in anchors, but where cladding/shielding is connected with the metal screws into metal, corrosion can make removing them a PITA.

I had a 2005 Corolla. This happened a few times driving through deep puddles probably a little faster than I should have. The splash shield was damaged when I bought the car and I had it held on with tie wraps through the original fastener holes, but it wasn't 100%. The tensioners on these cars are a known weak spot, so if it still has the original on there and the belt gets a good soaking it will indeed slip until the friction dries it off. Thankfully it only took a moment for that to happen on mine. The tensioner never got worse, so the original is still on the car with nearly 250,000 miles on it (gave it to a family member years ago).

Great work on the quick and easy fix Ivan! First time I saw a belt wear tool, but yes, the shiny edges of the pulleys are a quick reference for a worn out belt. Dear Mr. Ivan, FYI, I have had the same problem with my Hyundai Sonata 2 years ago in winter when I happen to go through a water puddle, and the problem was a crankshaft pulley that is not a complete solid steel, but a kind of a pulley that is comprised of 2 parts with a rubber bushing in between the outer steel part that is attached to the belt and inner steel part that is mounted on the crank. I believe such a rubber bushing layer is being made to absorb the compressor impact load if AC is operated at high speed, and with age the rubber looses its bonding and grip and becomes slippery initially with water and later when operating the AC. So the remedy was a new crankshaft pulley. Just wanted you to know that. Take Care. John Kaplanian from Jordan / Middle East.

I have a personal car that does that, it gets water on it every once in a while and slips. I cannot find the exact guard. So I just try avoiding it by slowing down over them. It only does it when you splatter water that is fairly deep anyway, so you should slow down over it to begin with. But otherwise it's a great car, almost 300k and original tranny+motor, &rack. Yes the rack leaks, and the motor is starting to leak coolant in the intake gaskets, but to me these days. Anything that goes well over 100k is a good car. People always talk about how long a vehicle last after they've replaced half the drivetrain. But the drivetrain is what your mileage is counting on so to see even part of it still intact is impressive sometimes. By the way your videos are great and appreciate the effort involved in some of them because I have been there dozens of times. Although it looks like the belt did the trick you didn't consider the tensioner pully could have been off calibration and not providing the correct pressure or tension on the belt as well. How would you have checked the tensioner pully?

looks similar to where the belt on my daughter's old car, an 07 Mazda 3, was. Except it was one of those no-stretch belts.

You mean "stretch-to-fit" belt? Those are a pain to install lol

Doesn't Toyota recommend that you replace the tensioner at the same time as the belt. Also aren't you supposed to replace the mounting bolt and nut since it gets fatigued over time and breaks off while driving. Many owners have experienced it breaking.

The ghost of Scotty Kilmer. I believe one of the manufacturers has this diagnosis about belts. Maybe through Rock Auto

Soon as I seen the symptoms I knew it was a bad belt getting wet, my 2011 corolla (next gen but very similar for belt and shields) did almost identical to that. I had a worn belt (145k on the original with no cracks in it. And the grooves were over 1/2 less the the new belt. And my shield was there. But had a couple Christmas trees missing which acted like a funnel when I hit a puddle 🤣

Also, irritating that they use the nice auto tensioner on the 9th gens, but 10th is done with tensioning off the alternator…. Way less consistent results when you are required to go off a bolt for tension

Ivan, is the old belt the correct one? I just checked the NAPA site and that number doesn’t match the list. Two of the belts end with 1880 and your original is 1879.

My 05 Silverado does this if you hit deep enough water too fast....also never makes a peep just see the voltage drop and loss of PS....dries a bit and all good

I have a Pontiac Vibe that does the exact same thing, but only if I reallllllly stuff it into a huge puddle at speed. Crazy.

Something I had never seen anyone do, Eric-o takes a pick and cleans the valleys out on the pulleys. He says rubber builds up in there and the belt wont fully seat.

If something seized and the belt melted on, then for sure the pulleys must be cleaned. Otherwise not necessary 👍
