That is one thing I do like about having a full service driveline shop locally. With my 04 Tahoe I replaced all plastic welded u-joints a few years ago. Took it up there afterwards for balancing as it's always recommended to get the driveshaft balanced after replacing the u-joint. I learned that over 25 yrs ago working on Semi Trucks. We always balanced them after replacement unless customer declined. Yes it was extra time and money but it eliminated comebacks. The ones who declined were normally back in the next trip having us get it balanced anyways as they'd feel it. The plastic welded GM ones, always get them balanced as you'll find out sooner than later that you should've if you don't.

The ebay part is probably a Rockford 430-11A. It's easy to install, but with the angled, unmachined surface of the driveshaft, only a small fraction of the snap rings touch, and on some driveshafts (like mine) there may still be a gap allowing side to side play. The Spicer 5-3201X has a larger cross with the proper cap size that extends deeper into the cap holes and probably would have prevented the failure that Ivan experienced, and may have even worked on his damaged driveshaft, but since the grooves are spaced too wide, centering and securing the caps are up to you. The large cross is a very tight fit that may require light filing of the u-joint forging marks to install. I centered by sight, checked on the car with an angle gauge, then tack welded the caps. If you are comfortable doing this, I think it's a more robust part. A slightly smaller cross than the Spicer, maybe easier to find, and no filing is the Rockford 430-11, or the even smaller TUS-11. If you want the easiest install, check out the Rockford 430-11A and its rebrands and clones, possibly a Pronto PT430-11A or TUS-11A, but you may have the same failure shown in the video.

I got a new tailshaft made up for my 2002 Holden VY SS Commodore about 4 years ago (43,000 kilometres or about 27,000 miles) & I replaced the universal joint in it yesterday because it started vibrating at about April last year. I replaced the centre bearing in it last due to vibrations but it came back a bit of a vibrating feeling,I replaced the universal joint because there was vibrations,note that the universal joints shouldn't feel tight which means that they're binding up. The trunnions had too much play which I Think was causing a vibration at 40 km (25 mph) due to 0.4mm (0.016") of play so I made 2 × 0.2mm (0.008") thick shims out of a Milo ( Australian energy food drink lid), they have external circlips,not internal circlips or Snap rings,note that I have kept the old universal joint &;I want to inspect it & possibly reuse it if the one that I have fitted failed. It is a possibility that the old universal joint was 0.4mm (0.016") off centre. Now there's no vibration. I would've had to beware earlier on because an eBay seller was pressing new universal joints into the old tailshaft yokes where the original ones were staked into position,the problem with that is that they were tack welding the new caps into position & it's very hard to get them centred which is why I ordered a brand new aftermarket tailshaft because who knows how many eBay sellers returned them & they're not getting sold like that on eBay anymore !

I just did a set of U joints on a Rogue as well. The time spent to replace them was significant compared to a good old truck drive shaft or the like.. I’d probably elect to just replace the drive shaft in the future. I also found that the new U-joints aren’t an exact fit. If you press the caps in just far enough to get the clips on them there is still 1/8” of play.. so you have to carefully press the caps in a little at a time on each side and measure how deep they are.. it’s not an exact science and then in the end you have the slop taken out, but the clips on the caps aren’t holding them anymore, the only thing keeping the caps in place is the press fit. The clip will stop the cap coming all the way out, but without the OEM stakes the cap is free to work its way back to bottom out on the clip.. time will tell if the press fit is tight enough to stop this from happening or not. So, my conclusion is the same as yours, not worth the time and effort to do U joints, just replace the shaft.

Sometimes it is better to replace a questionable part, than try to fix it. I was told by the shop that the cv axle on the drivers side of my car needs replacing, but questioned whether the passenger side needs replacing as well. I replaced both axles. However when I did that, i found on the drivers side ball joint pinch bolt on the drivers side was a torx bolt where the other side was a hex head bolt. I know when the control arm on the passenger side, all of the hardware was replaced with new, but was wondering if the pinch bolt on the OEM side is a torx or hex? I want to know which one is original. Since you have a earlier version of the contour, can you check and see if it is the torx head ot hex head on the ball joint pinch bolt?
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics5 жыл бұрын
hmmm don't remember any hex bolts on my Mystique, and I replaced both front control arms a year ago. Doesn't really matter either way, if the bolt is high quality :)
@cclngthr5 жыл бұрын
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Thanks. The bolt on the passenger side is new since the lower control arm assembly was replaced 2 years ago. We replaced all the hardware when that was done. I plan on swapping the torx bolt with a grade 8 bolt when i change out the oil and transmission fluid. Also, here is something a Ford engineer told me a while back, which applies to all cars. Magnafine makes a small magnetic cooler line filter for the automatic transmission and power steering system. The filter is installed on the output line of the cooler lines and filters the fluid better than the OEM filter.
