I couldn't agree more. I really focus in on the drums when I'm listening to live Floyd shows. The drums and the bass. There's a huge difference between the drums & bass work on the studio LPs and the drum & bass working during their live performances. More often than not, the live drums & bass are WAY better than what was on the record. Like, "Live at Pompeii"... Jesus Christ! What I said about Nick & Roger is true for David & Rick as well, but it all dependinds on the performance. Like, Echoes (Part I) from Pompeii is SO MUCH BETTER than what's on Meddle. The bassline during the "Funky Section" is SO different, so much better than what the bassline is on the album. Nick was right there with him killin' it, David's guitar work in that section, Rick holding everything else down like the badass he was. It's probably my favourite piece of music ever made. The Pompeii performance of A Saucerful of Secrets is probably the best performance of that song ever. Same goes for "Careful with That Axe, Eugene", & One of These Days... I mean, Pompeii is so fvcking incredible as a whole, as a music film, as a documentary, as a live performance, etc. They managed to catch lightning in a bottle with Pompeii. We got to hear & see Pink Floyd at the absolute top of their game, by then they had finally figured out what their sound was without Syd, and what their sound was going to be, and they were just so in sync with each other, they were working together better than they ever had at that point. It's just awe inspiring to experience it. Not to say that they weren't incredible from the start, but having lost Syd, continuing on with David in his place was very difficult for them. Waters had to become the primary songwriter, & start singing lead vocals. David had to step up as the only guitarist, as well as sing lead vocals, rick had to sing lead & backing vocals, etc. A LOT of things changed for them very quickly & they had to adapt. A Saucerful of Secrets, More, Atom Heart Mother, Everything released before "Meddle" was fvcking brilliant, but all that music was still just those four guys experimenting, trying shit out, trying to figure out where to go from the moment Syd became unreliable. They were figuring out what the music was that they were going to make. What it should be, what it should sound like, & ultimately what type of band they wanted to be. I think by the time they recorded Meddle, they knew exactly what they were doing, knew exactly what type of music they wanted to make, and exactly what type of band they wanted to be. They were working together PERFECTLY as a group. N somehow they were able to capture that on film with the Pompeii performances. You're watching a band that's newly confident, every member is firing on all cylinders, giving it everything they've got, all while making it look effortless. They seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit. They were having a fvcking blast. The Pink Floyd we all know and love had finally figured it all out, & cemented themselves as the greatest band on the planet. Meddle was their first "Masterpiece". Most people consider The Dark Side of the Moon as their first "Masterpiece", but na, Meddle is their first album that completely changed music forever. They improved as they continued on all the way to The Wall, & then after that it was never the same again. I like all those "Post-The Wall" albums, but none of it's actually Pink Floyd (to me anyway). "Wish You Were Here" was probably their best album, "Animals" is right up there too but as a whole, "Wish You Were Here" is just absolute perfection at the height of the band's talent. Issues between Roger & the other three members started to be a problem around Animals, & that's why Animals is so drastically different from any of their previous LPs. Roger was running the show, & then by The Wall it was just all Roger for the most part. N that was the last Pink Floyd album. "The Final Cut" is not a Pink Floyd album, it's just a "Roger Waters Solo Album" with David on guitar & Nick on drums. Once Roger left, Rick came back, & they started a different band, but kept the name "Pink Floyd". It's obvious why they kept the name, but I found it to be very... "misleading" at the very least. The Wall is Pink Floyd's last album. At least the band ended on a good note, The Wall is one of the greatest albums ever made. Not my favourite Floyd LP, but it's pretty high up on the list. Aight I definitely went overboard with this comment. That is all... -

@@shroomshady27 I REALLY enjoyed reading this. Thank you! And what I loved so much about this performance was that is almost seemed organic. Like it was created right there on the spot. And IMO, Nick carried the entire performance. One of the greatest drumming performances ever. Shit, it was like he was playing the melody. With Richard laying that foundation. And David. What can you say? Silence is better. I have major issues now with Roger as a person, so I’ll just say that he night have been at his best right here. That’s not an insult at all. But his bass here was like gravity holding the earth in orbit.
@shroomshady278 ай бұрын
@@davsaltego Ha, right on man. A person on youtube responding to a comment of mine with a genuinely nice response! It's almost always the exact opposite. That's so refreshing, I appreciate it. I agree with everything you said. Quite a bit of this performance was created eight there on the spot. Floyd never plays any song the same exact way twice. Any Colour You Like is one of the best Floyd songs to hear live. We've all heard Dark Side, we all know exactly how that song sounds, note for note. Ever since they first started playing it live in early '72, before it got its proper name, it was fvcking amazing every single time. I could watch them play this song for an hour and I'd love every minute of it. Very much a Rick Wright piece, but by the time they got all the Dark Side tracks in order & started playing the entire album live in its entirety in '72, Any Colour was epic from the very beginning. By '74 they had been playing Dark Side like it is on the LP, and continued to improve upon, and change things. This Wembley show is considered by most to be the greatest live performance of Dark Side EVER. I can't disagree, it is fvcking phenomenal. N since it's an instrumental, they can keep playing it for as long as they feel like, and change as many things as they wanna change. I've heard just about every live performance of this song from early '72 all the way to the last time they ever played it. N this is probably my favourite version. Especially now that it's been remastered and the audio is so crisp and clean now. I've had a copy of this entire concert for over a decade, & when I finally heard the 50th Anniversary remaster, I cried. It was just so fvcking beautiful. (I was also on magic mushrooms at the time but that's neither here nor there). So Nick Mason, exactly like you said in your comment, he is criminally underrated. I don't think people take into account how insanely talented you'd have to be to play drums for Pink Floyd. It's not an easy task, and this performance is a glorious example of how dope Nick was, and still is. They all continued to get better as time went on, so '74 Nick could drum circles around "Live at Pompeii Nick". That film and those performances of all those songs in particular just blew my fvcking mind the first time I watched it, and more importantly heard it for the first time. I'll always put Pompeii up on a pedestal, it's so nostalgic for me and I'm so familiar with every note played in that film. I loved Nick's tight purple shirt with the colourful butterfly on the front that he wore during Pompeii. His drumming on "One of These Days" from Pompeii really caught my attention, same with "Careful" & "Saucerful" like I mentioned in that last comment. I just remember thinking "How the fvck is this guy keeping up with all this insanity?!? That was the moment I realized how underrated he really is. N this performance of Any Colour, he's just killing it. He's keeping the beat, playing it like it's played on the album, and then playing all these different fills and adding all these little changes, he really does kinda steal everyone else's thunder once they really get into it. He's just in the zone and playing the shit outta that song. I feel you about Roger. He's never been the greatest bassist, not even close. His basslines are usually very simplistic, & I'm a bassist myself, so I've learned and pkayed along to most of Floyds studio albums. When he plays live he adds a lot of "funk" to many if the appropriate basslines. Like when I mentioned that "Funky Section" of "Echoes (Part One)" from Pompeii, I swear to god, Roger and Nick together completely transform that section of Echoes into one of the greatest pieces of music ever. N the studio version of Echoes, during that "Funky Section", the drums are still amazing, but the bassline on the album is basically two notes played over and over again, with a few little fills and seemingly random notes. That section in Pompeii is SO MUCH BETTER. I'll have to send you the link with a time code so you can hear exactly what I'm referring to. It's like a completely different bassline. N Nick is right there with him just absolutely killing it. The drums in that section are so much more powerful than what he played on the album, and what he's playing is very noticeably different, but it's like Nick and Roger are sharing the same brain, like they just complimented each other so well in "Funky Section" from Pompeii, and in live performances in general. In this, the same thing's happening, you just can't take your eyes off of Nick. He was putting on a fvcking show that night, and it couldn't be more obvious. I never understood why Nick was and IS so underrated, he's one of my favourite drummers of all-time. I think people tend to think that the "Best Drummers", or "Greatest Bassists", etc. are the ones that are insanely technical. I mean I love me some really complicated drumming and bass playing, but I've seen some of the most technically complicated drum work performed live right in front of my face, and the we're times where I was not impressed at all. Like, the technical abilities and the complexity of the drumming is always impressive, but a lot of times after some "Epic" crazy complicated drum solo or something, I've found myself unimpressed. Just because it didn't sound good. Just because a drummer can play insanely complicated shit doesn't mean anything unless it sounds good, and works with/within the song. Same goes for basslines. I grew up learning PRIMUS basslines when I barely knew how to play. Which is nuts because Les Claypool is a mad scientist and one of the most technically proficient bassists of all-time. His bass work (especially live) is unfathomably complicated. Took me years to learn how to play some of his easier basslines. He's a unicorn though, the second you hear him play one note, you know it's Claypool. That's why I love Roger's bass work so much. N since I started learning all these damn near impossible basslines, once I was finally a proficient bass player, I decided to learn some Floyd songs, & playing those basslines compared to literally any PRIMUS song felt so effortless. That's what made me want to try and take on entire Floyd LPs on bass, and I even figured out that "Funky Section of Echoes from Pompeii. It was much more complicated than what's on the album, but it was worth every second I spent learning it and figuring out what exactly Roger was doing with all these "new" fills and runs and all that. I can't speak the same way about drums, because I just never learned how to play them. I was taught how to hold the sticks, how to sit properly and how to keep a beat and stay in the pocket with the bassline, but I can't sit down at a kit and do anything impressive. A four-string bass however, that's a different story all together. I'll send you a link & a timecode for that funky bit of Echoes from Pompeii. I swear you'll be like "Oh, yeah this is WAY BETTER than the album!". It's shockingly better, and so much funkier. If you listen to it, and then go listen to that same section from the studio version, you'll be like "This is boring as shit compared to Pompeii". I'ma find it real quick... -
