Richard Wright was the most underrated member. Next to Gilmour, he had the best singing voice and was criminally not utilized much after DSOTM. Gilmour couldn't write lyrics, but was an awesome guitarist. Roger wrote the best material, but was pretentious and couldn't sing very well. Syd was the soul of the band and was very creative. Nick was one of the best drummers of that era and continues the legacy of the Pink Floyd.

@CollapsingRealities

I can't remember the songwriting credits but it's pretty obvious that Wright's contribution to Wish You Were Here is enormous. The album would have never sounded or been the same without him. Wright's contribution to some parts of Animals are remarkable as well. By the time of The Wall, I agree, he can hardly be heard. Waters whines about how little Gilmour and Wright contributed to Pink Floyd in the late Seventies, yet he was probably delighted to be the leader. Wright and Gilmour whine about Pink Floyd's late Seventies material and Waters' obsession with having complete control over the band, yet they made solo albums in 1978 - Why didn't they keep that material to make an album as a band again, after the Animals experience? The Wall is probably my favourite double studio album ever (I'm not counting 55 plus minute long albums released on single CDs), but I think there is a certain lack of coherence in what Wright, Waters and Gilmour said about The Wall and the eventual disintegration of the band.

Funny. Echoes was played live by David and Rick in 2006 and Jon Carin singing Rick’s high parts as David and Rick together sang David’s original part. The song was retired when Rick passed away from David’s repertoire. Nick plays it now. Atom Heart Mother saw Roger love If and Nick plays it and sections of Atom Heart Mother live now. Even David Gilmour played it in 2008 and grew an appreciation for it and now used the Black Strat for just the main guitar parts except for the slide parts which he now plays on his crème colored lap steel guitar hoisted on a stand which he is seated when he plays the steel guitar parts. Plus David regularly plays Fat Old Sun live. Roger played If on his first two solo tours and wanted on Echoes but outvoted, Fat Old Sun ditto. The Division Bell David is proud of. He still plays What Do You Want From Me (added to his repertoire in 2016 live), Marooned (once after 1994), A Great Day for Freedom (played once in 2006 after the band’s retirement), Wearing the Inside Out (played regularly in 2006 and retired when Wright passed away), Coming Back to Life and High Hopes David is proud of and plays both regularly in solo shows. I believe you are confused with A Momentary Lapse of Reason which David wound up remixing and replacing the synthesizers with outtakes of Rick’s keyboards and all new drums from Nick. David said The Final Cut was the lowest point of Pink Floyd and him and Roger had fist fights during the making of the album.

Re;'Have a Cigar', the real story is that the song was worked up from experimental backing track first. It was only when the vocal was required that the band realised that for any of the band to sing the lyrics the backing track would have to be taken down a pitch or re-recorded at a lower pitch for the vocal to fit the music/backing track. The choice of Roy Harper as vocalist was a short cut, a way to keep the original backing track that had been recorded.

I never understand why people disparage their own work so much, after all there are plenty of detractors out there waiting to rubbish you, why do their job for them? I've been a Floyd fan since I first heard them in 67, most fans back then didn't think Ricks songs were rubbish. Atom Heart Mother was so hated that it became Floyd's first No.1 album in the UK, given that in 1970 they were not the massive stadium filling band they later became, that album must have also appealed to people other than Floyd fans. I know a lot of people who got into Floyd after Dark Side don't tend to like the experimental stuff, except for Echoes perhaps, but back in the day it was both groundbreaking and very popular with the fans. Remember a day is one of my favourite Floyd songs. Seesaw sounds more like the Moody Blues than the Beach Boys to me, but I actually think it was pretty good for the time. Let's face it every artist will release some material which doesn't seem so good in hindsight but you have to look at it from the point of view of being there at the time of release and compare it with what was around at the time imo.

It's called humility, and every truly great artist has it - the ability to see where improvements could be made allows them to grow. Compare and contrast with Oasis, who claim everything they stole from other artists and repurposed into mainstream pop-rock for the hard of thinking is a testament to their genius: their 1st album is just as tedious as their final one.

My first Floyd concert was 1971, in support of the Meddle album. I remember hearing echoes live for the first time. I think it was the academy of music just north of the village in New York City. I won't mention exactly why, but let's say that everything was much more colorful that evening. While 'The Wall' has some better classic tracks, it is for me the LP that killed my interest in the band because of it being STUFFED with FILLER! As for 'Animals' it, like the Beatles 'Sgt Peppers', is far better as an LP AS A WHOLE, as it like the three earlier LPs (Meddle , DSOTM, and WYWH) is perfect from start to finish and shows the band playing TOGETHER for the last time with some excellent playing from all involved. It IS more difficult to absorb than the previous three but it's 'darkness' is more natural and less melodramatic and tiring than the last BORING PF albums by ANY of them! in 1980 there was the Talking Heads, 'Remain in Light' that was the DSOTM of the 1980's and truly thrilling. Also heads up for the Psychedelic Furs and Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Pil, the Clash, Lene Lovich, the Specials, the Stranglers, Ian Dury etc etc etc.

@@vladdrakul7851 Moving Pictures from Rush was the 1980s DSotM. Rush were a band who progressed. Animals was the first Roger Waters solo album IMHO. The 1970-75 era was a true band. 1976-85 was The Roger Waters Power Trip and he was rejecting ideas of Wright and bullied him out in a four year span with Rick quitting the band after a show in America where Roger berated Rick on stage. Roger was staying at separate hotels and taking either separate limousines or helicopters to the performances on the 1977 US Tour. I will listen to live performances of Animals and The Wall before the studio albums. The Division Bell is a better album than Animals.

@@vladdrakul7851 New Wave sucks. Bands like Motörhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, early Def Leppard and later Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth and subsequently Pantera released superior music to losers like Siousie and the Banshees (crap), Psychedelic Furs (BORING). Rush picked up the mantle from Pink Floyd and created brilliant hard rock marrying Progressive Rock and the white reggae styles of The Police and The Talking Heads. Rush is held in higher regard than the crappy New Wave which died. Only The Cars appealed to Hard Rockers for the crunchy hard rock guitar and synthesizers for the perfect balance (bands like Foreigner and Styx and Journey had them as an opening act and musically The Cars were good but live their stage presence was boring).

Thanks for the video! Have A Cigar has a quite high pitched vocal line, and the outtakes of Roger and David attempting to sing it might be proof of the hard time they were having with it. Not sure Roger would have nailed it himself, though he improved (and forced) his voice a lot in later years. After all The Wall had him sing in a very wide range of vocal expression, rock raoucous to soft to disturbingly fragile. But despite the bickering and fatigue in the studio it would have been worth it to try a few more takes himself or better directing Harper. The track is great nevertheless and he mentions his dissatisfactions too often about it. I'd be curious to hear a new version of his to understand what he was looking for, though Dark Side Redux leaves me perplexed.

I have to say part of this negativity is just British being British. As an American, sometimes Britons seem very cautious not to be sentimental or over-esteem their contributions to things. I've heard Robert Fripp and Peter Gabriel, even Sir Paul say things about their own music that just crushes me, but after a while I realized it was this cultural divide between American and British self-reflection. Americans tend to fan the flames a little when people show admiration, and Britons tend to shy away and undercut its importance. To each his own.

I agree completely about The Final Cut. It's not a bad album. But it's not a Pink Floyd album. It's a Roger Waters solo album with David and Nick as guests. I don't agree about The Division Bell. While it may have been songs left over from A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, it's not a David Gilmour solo album with Richard and Nick as guests. This is a very informative and well done piece.

The drum fill on the G-Em walkdown into the chorus on Possible Pasts has always been so striking to me, especially the last one where there's almost a hesitation but it works so well into the breakdown. I felt like this whole album we really got to see into the core of Roger and what really pushes him to speak out. That over-the-top theatrics as he calls it is what really makes the album a Requiem that honors the boys who made the ultimate sacrifice-like his father, while at the same time calling out the hypocrisies of the Western Economic Order. He goes further in his 2017 solo record ITTLWRW mentioning how we could've really achieved peace after the second world war, but we chose to adhere to Marshall Plan and the American Dream, which has only resulted in shifting the goal post to the War on Communism, then to the War on Terrorism. And now look where we are now: Alliances like NATO and BRICS are expanding and like the song, it feels like Deja Vu.

Gilmour: "It (The Wall) lacks soul." And he didn't want to "talk about the album." Well, for some 45 years after it's release, until his recent retirement from stage shows, he certainly had no problem performing Comfortably Numb in every single live appearance he makes. I understand that David had previously written the majority of the music for his solo record, but decided to use it on The Wall, instead. I love him and the majority of his work, but with all due respect, I disagree with his assessment. I wonder if he even got the point of the message of the Wall. Roger had said in interviews that he intended the album to be "an assault on the senses," aimed at venting his disdain for the "stadium-packed mega concert scene," which created an atmosphere of chaos, confusion, and formed a sort of invisible wall between himself and the audience. Gilmour had also said that he "found the middle of the album (side 3 in vinyl terms) to be too soft and boring." I find that part to be very soulful, tender, engaging, and enjoyable. The mellowness (is that a word?) sooths me. The sorrow of it touches me, and it resonates with me. It makes the entirety even more pertinent to me, especially Hey You, Is There Anybody Out There, Nobody Home, and of course, Comfortably Numb, as Roger expresses a longing for true human connection, but isn't finding it. His pain expressed through his lyrics and music somehow brings a thought of an odd kind of relief: That even the most successful rock stars are people, too, and also struggle with feelings of personal loss, alienaton, and yearning for deeper fulfillment. And though he wasn't the first or the last one to put such emotions to music, he certainly was one of the best at doing so, especially in this album. Very soulful, I would reiterate. Thanks for the cool upload. Aside from a video of Miley Cyrus attempting to cover Comfortably Numb, which I had to abandon within the first minute, I pretty much enjoy watching anything related to the Floyd.

The Narrow Way, poi, è il pezzo migliore!
