The song represents the control that record labels excert on their artists, dictating all that they do and all that they say. Thus, welcome to the machine designed to make music executives rich. The song ends with the sound of the record company's elevator heading upwards and the doors opening on a floor where all the company's executives are drinking, laughing and partying on the money they're making. Your Pink Floyd reactions have been great. Keep up the good work.

Awesome reaction, takes me back more than 40years to when I used to come home from school and play my older brothers "your NOT allowed to touch" vinyl collection! My first intro to Floyd was the album Meddle (just before Dark Side and later Wish You Were Here) Definitely going through track by track is gonna give the most from the album. The only thing I can suggest is to take a look at PF Echoes live at Pompeii, playing in an empty Roman Amphitheater with no audience. You get a to see the guys at the time, see the technology of the day, and really get a feel for the pure musicianship.

Pink Floyd were the last of the hard psychedelic bands, but they lost Syd Barret after their 1968 debut, he suffered a severe mental break from excessive LSD and was permanently damaged, he would never again function as a normal human being. This was a traumatic experience that haunted their songwriting through their whole career, the themes were dark, cynical, Roger Waters wrote with vicious honesty, disenchantment with a hostile, violent world that strips us of our humanity. Ruthless... 'Welcome to the Machine.. now get in line, grab a shovel and start diggin your grave.."

Hi. as you'll know, the album is about Syd Barrett. this track is about the way that the record industry treated both him and the group, as a whole. the sound affects at the end, represent an elevator going up to a room where a party is going on. the actual sound affect, itself, comes from a movie. here, in the UK, many large companies, with sprawling factories, had sirens, to indicate the end of a shift. the voices are all the workers coming together, to leave via the gate. Pink Floyd began their career as an experimental psychedelic band. the keyboard synthesisers became available in the late 60s and the echoplex, big muff etc pedals started to be used around the start of the 70s. Pink Floyd experimented with these things more than anyone else, except, maybe, Jimmy Hendrix.

Pink Floyd's genius has stood the test of time because their brand of music is not only god tier musicianship, but because their music is completely unique and original. No band before or after them has recreated that Pink Floyd feel. You can clone the other greats like Led Zeppelin, Beatles, etc. but trying to recreate a Pink Floyd takes a special kind of genuis.

So, the ending of this track really works more as an intro to the next track "Have a Cigar". This album is largely about the sudden explosion of success that Pink Floyd had from "Dark Side of the Moon". "Welecome to the Machine" is about them realizing they are now a part of a big corporate machine...and they hated it. So going back to the end of this song. It's meant to represent the sound of an elevator going to the top floor of the record label's building, and the door opens to a big party in their honor, where big money record execs are waiting to suck up to the band...which they hate. And that's what "Have a Cigar" is about

I am so glad to see that your generation is finding the brilliance of music like Pink Floyd. It honestly fills me with joy. People always think the members of Floyd were just stoners but you should hear the stories from studio musicians who played with them. They could no believe their attitude toward the perfection of every note and sound. They tried to make an album from just noises they could make with household items. They gave up on the idea but it lead them into new places, places that make our heart skip a beat. Please, review Scrapper Blackwell, nobody knows you when your down. It is the absolute perfection of the soul of a musician.
