I like to leave the notorious pirates alone for most of the game so they can accumulate gold that I can take from them later when I finally decide to go after them. The exception is Jack Rackham, who never really makes any money during the game, so you can rub him out early. Basically the notorious pirates, especially Henry Morgan and Blackbeard, are like a savings account that earns a lot of interest for you while you're dealing with other tasks in the game.

The video from 41:42 is still gone. though the audio is still there. Comments from two years ago corroborate it. So still not fixed, at least not for me... Otherwise, a very useful video. Thanks :)

Indian war canoe is the best ship in the game you can dodge cannons and board the enemy, pick fencing skill always use the rapier try to only use thrust, and try to get all the fencing items. The Spiffing Brit taught me all of this and more if you want to watch the video then look up The Spiffing Brit Sid Meiers Pirates. And don’t forgot to fully upgrade your canoe.

39:50 I played the old Amiga version (1990) and in that version I could sail sloops and pinnaces over reefs without taking damage.

For whoever still plays; don't sail out with empty hulls, invest, buy/sell all the time. Learn prices. Also, this guy can't sail too well, no offense. Learn to use the wind!! It always blows east to west. It really benefits agility if you know how to use this. So don't ever sail straight into it but at 45 degrees. The dancing went pretty well, as well as the fighting. I believe you can do flourishes by double tapping the move at the right time to fill up the bar quicker, so you don't have to dance as long.

I used to play this as well, and I still have my discs. :) You have such a strategic approach to games! I loved watching this LP, helps me to understand where I went wrong while playing back in the day, Thanks :)

If you let named pirates stay on the map, they collect more booty. Go to regular pirate havens, send them to attack a town, then kill them and the pirate ships that spawn to stop them. = 3 pirates points for one action.

This is an excellent strategy. In addition to the pirate sloop that spawns, you get up to three pirate brigs that sail out of the port you send the pirates to attack. You can capture these brigs. They will usually make a beeline for you and try to board, so you don’t have to mess with cannons or evasive maneuvers. The brigs usually sell for 600-700 gold depending on how many upgrades they have (from one to three) so it’s easy money. Also, you can upgrade to a brig if you want to. Just be sure to have enough crew on your own ship to handle the fights. On Swashbuckler level three brigs spawn so you can really make some money if you capture them all, plus the pirate sloop. I would also like to add that fighting pirates boosts your standing with every nation. Governors will give you promotions for taking out pirates, and give you access to their daughters.

my game seems to be missing stuff. I didnt get the attribute screen and i dont get the sword select window...wtf, im on steam

My game was the same way the first time I played it, but when I went back to start a new game all of the options were there. I think when you start your first character the game automatically sets you to the lowest difficulty and picks everything for you until you upgrade to the next highest difficulty after splitting up loot. I could be wrong, but that's how it seemed to work for me.

Always pick fencing skill, especially at rogue+ levels. Always use the Rapier- it's the fastest weapon. Use thrust for fastest attack.

Got all the pieces to Montelbons hideout...following the map from the shore, it shows the hideout just beyond the cabin and inca temple...I've been over every inch of that area and cant find anything...help!

JUST started playing this game for PSP. After doing a practice run I started with the french and took out the no 1 pirate right out the gate by pure chance and got his ship. But then I fucked up. I went HAM on the Spanish and now the sea is FLOODED with Spanish pirate hunters and sloops of war. Whoops 🤭 also my crew is steadily getting restless. I hear you can sail indefinitely. Trying for that. I hate how you have to basically start from scratch after 7 months

Why would you want to stay neutral??? Antagonize 2 countries, plunder, destroy, and steal, after you get good promotions from both, make peace with the other 2 and antagonize both former allies😂 no, really you can get to be Duke for all 4 nations

Huh ? Character creation only offered me to type a name. No Difficulty, Skill or start date. WTH ? Edit: What ? No choice of sword either prior to combat. Is the steam version of the game crippled ? Lost here.

on first time playing it auto puts you on easiest difficulty and on it you don't get to pick any of those as it doesn't expect you to now the difference

On first start the game forces you into the easiest settings without telling you. Unfortunately this game adhered to the old school of thought where players were expected to read the physical manual that came with the game before they would actually play it, hence the lack of tutorial or useful tips in the game. A very unintuitive and counter future-proofing move in hindsight.

@@richard1493 Funny thing is I stopped playing because I felt the game was too easy. 🤣 I may give it a try again once I manage to get some more time. Just for nostalgia purpose. Thumbs down for the developers. It´s not like when we were kids with plenty of time to spare.

@@PinkasBrown44 honestly I don’t think I ever even noticed as a child. When you boot up the game again, just start your new “first” game, save it, then you should be able to start a new game with custom options.
