They could've done that a long time ago but chose to put out Rekordbox instead and now because their investment isn't working they buy out the competition. That is a huge red flag in my book. I haven't been to a single venue where djs are using Rekordbox on the setup. It's either Serato via controller or Scratch Mixer or USB inputs via CDJ...I'm not happy about this at all.

this makes perfect sense, Pioneer will be releasing all in one controllers in the near future with the Serato software baked into the hardware from the ground up, which will include stems, FXs, and DVS mode. This will compete directly with the Denon Prime 4+.
@JamBurglar Жыл бұрын
This reinforces my preference for vintage gear. I want something that I can buy, works out of the box, and lasts until it breaks and can't be repaired. I'm wary of anything that requires software support to keep running as it was intended. I'm adamantly opposed to paying a subscription fee. Consolidations like this seem to increase the risk that older products will lose support and their useful life will be cut short as a result. Also, as these smaller companies get eaten up by large ones, it feels like our options are becoming more and more limited. For example, I don't think any company offers a good scratch mixer with an external effects loop these days. Most good audio gear is not cookie-cutter. The little oddities of the gear that sets it apart from other things on the market are often what makes it great. As the companies get merged, those idiosyncrasies tend to vanish. For example, I don't think any modern DVS mixers have external effects loops anymore. On the other hand, if this move somehow betters Serato/Recordbox without limiting availability to Alpha Theta products, then it may be a good thing. We may get the best of both worlds. Not that it matters to me because my trusty Rane TTM-57mkii is "no longer supported".

wouldn't it be great to upload an OS of your choice and then fully integrate it into the controller? Say I want VirtualDJ, ok, I purchase the license, activate it on said controller and download it via the web. OR say I want to use Serato, Ok, purchase Serato Pro, download on controller and override the previous OS and start fresh. I think we need to have this type of option available in the future, the microprocessors in these devices are obviously fully capable of supporting multiple engines as most will allow computer and standalone mode. However, it all comes down to Pioneer, Denon, and others to make it a reality.

Hey there, my gut feeling is telling this is how it’s going to play: For medium term nothing major will happen, but in the long run I think that Serato is going to be deprecated, slowly and surely, until it becomes irrelevant. Let’s not forget that Rekordbox in performance mode is basically a Serato clone but it’s more open in terms of hardware, soundcards especially. They even use if I recall correctly the same frequency for the DVS as Serato and Serato disks work in some way with RB. In terms of hardware, yeah, maybe we’ll see something maybe interesting, although given the last releases from Pioneer except the REV 7, I highly doubt it. InMuisc won’t take kindly to this, i’m sure, and maybe this will give opportunity to N.I to finally release some standalone hardware as they’ve done with the Maschine+ and finally making Traktor Apple Silicon native, so the knowledge of RISC based CPUs is there at this point, hopefully the incentive is there as well as we need more competition. I don’t think that Pioneer owning the booth more than it does is really healthy, as it’s not really healthy in my books the status quo either.

I have 2 initial thoughts. 1. Alpha Theta doesn't really need to change anything. This is likely mostly a business play to immediately get a huge amount of market share. Now Alpha-Theta gets Serato license fees when Denon/Rane/Numark etc hardware that unlock Serato gets sold. 2. It's more interesting what InMusic does. They don't have an in-house DVS anymore. And if they continue to buy from Alpha Theta and let's say they could have a choice of licensing Serato or Rekordbox then do we see the possibility of REkordbox compatibility on InMusic hardware? Or the third choice, start working with Traktor. I wouldn't be surprised if InMusic buys Native Instruments or the entire Soundwide parent company (that I think had huge layoffs recently).

Those "Rekordbox only" controllers released in the past, (DDJ-1000, 800, 400) were not enough excuse for djs to move from Serato to Pios' software. Also Rekordbox being exclusively tied to Pioneer hardware unlock plus subscription to use it with their own old equipment, makes it less desirable to the masses, just like what Traktor has become with their subscription model for pro features. I believe only few people is paying to them. Probably Rekordbox and Serato will be merged together, and they will ask for a subscription fee for all non-Pioneer and old "Rekordbox only" gear to unlock the software while new Serato-Rekordbox units will be software unlock devices. What about in music? Will they pay tribute to Alfa Theta/Pioneer for licensing equipment to their newly acquired software? Will Pioneer lock away Serato from In Music, Reloop hardware? So many questions right now... What goes next? Paying a monthly fee to Pioneer just to enable the usage of our own SSD, thumbdrive, etc. with your already purchased music? Lol!

The possibilities of RB implementing Serato’s strengths in Stems/Studio/PnT or Serato finally going standalone or implementing the library management strengths of Rekordbox all sounds amazing to me. I recently had an issue with my DDJ-1000SRT. Bouncing back between Pioneer support and Serato support was a nightmare. The idea of eliminating that situation is music to my ears. Overall, I think this is great for the technical side of this equation. I do have concerns about a potential monopoly and the impact on pricing/subscriptions. I agree that seeing how InMusic responds is going to be really intriguing.

6 months ago, when hesitated between Serato and DJay Pro, my inner voice said, Serato soon will not available! I have listened.

As far as this goes, I think everyone has more questions than answers. Whats going to happen to all the faithful Serato Users, etc etc. I think if they just out right say what their plans are it would help most consumers understand the plans for the future. Other than that, Im both excited and worried bout whats to come.

Could this signal the end of the laptop as an integral part of a DJ/production setup? Outside of a prep tool. Let’s say they move the library management to the cloud and enable mobile device management…it’s gonna be interesting nonetheless.

Aside from something alike an Opus with stems (prime 4+), I will not be surprised if Pioneer really expand into music production - essentially a competitor for MPC’s, Maschine, etc. Cookin Soul’s videos with Serato Studio were dope - maybe we’ll see him do it without a computer

Not needing to setup Rekordbox and have a second library to play using USB / CDJ once in a while will be a dream.

No one has mentioned Phase support for Serato DJ Pro. After the buyout, I can see Phase will be directly integrated with Rekordbox DJ just like how Phase works with Serato DJ Pro.

It could be great, imagine having serato capabilities whilst only being a USB dj! Like the use of serato stems on cdjs/xdjs without having to use a laptop would be quality!

It won't be good if Pioneer implement a subscription only plan for Serato like they do with Rekordbox
@rezsbc Жыл бұрын
Pioneer's complete domination of the industry sure isn't something I'm happy about. But I've long since been mostly resigned to that. If this means that in future I can control Rekordbox with controllers that only Serato supports today then that would be cool. So some potential advantages. Or like you say exporting USBs from Serato that will work with Pioneer gear.

When a company has a monopoly in the market, it can provide consistent and standardised products, making it easier for consumers to make purchasing decisions. However, the downside is that market leaders can set their prices knowing that consumers have limited alternatives. In the case of Pioneer DJ products, some may argue that they are already overpriced considering the technological value they offer.

I think it is a good thing as long as AlphaTheta doesn’t make decisions that will lead to Enshittification

Hopefully we see some improvements for both platforms, can't wait for serato to support all poineer gear with hid mode, xdj 1000 mk2 or the 700 are not supported looking forward to that update

The most immediate thing to happen, Rev 7 support for rekordbox... (and rev 1)

Even if they make rekordbox support for the rev 7 you will be required to pay for a subscription fee.

I can see Serato having a lower tier for their "home DJ's" and Rekordbox being for the professionals.

My initial thaught was Serato's stems coming to RB, which would be very cool imo👍

Given the history of Pioneer DJ, how they treat innovation and their customers, my best guess it that they will integrate a few features from Serato into a Rekordbox 7.0, like the sexy waveforms, some plugins, stem separation, and then deprecate Serato entirely. I would like to be surprised with a different outcome. On the other hand, this gives inMusic, more specifically Denon, the chance to develop EngineDJ into a full standalone software to power their own brands hardware. They definitely have the innovation and drive to do so.

I hope: Serato gets a preview for library on the cue mix. XDJ RR gets serato liscence fast...

@RobAlahn Жыл бұрын
Gotta let this marinate. I’d love for this to shake out upsides only. For example: Alpha Theta/Pioneer DJ could say we bought Serato to make it better. And better by my definition would be the standalone functionality of Rekordbox Playlist to a standalone software “SeratoBox”. But what about the obvious downsides: decreased competition, decreased choices and increased costs. Pioneer DJ gear is already pretty expensive. Will this make other manufacturers brands that want to continue to ship with Serato inside more expensive?
@curtjames939 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps inMusic will make a similar play to acquire Virtual DJ, Algoriddim or even Traktor. Seems likely they will at least develop Engine DJ into a subscription based software that exists outside the Denon/Numark standalone ecosytem.
@zanobathroom Жыл бұрын
If they create fully integrated firmware/software/hardware that maximizes a rekordbox/serato/serato studio/serato sample union, then Denon/Akai/Rane would effectively have to collaborate on new products to compete. Could get really interest for “Next Gen” DJ gear.
