This is a great idea. I like the fact that you used common materials to make a really nice shop cart. I learned a lot form this. Thanks for making and sharing it.

Very cool! I like your shop improvement videos an awful lot. Your prototyping vids are neat to watch, but it’s the shop improvements that I might actually do or get ideas from. Thanks!

I bought a 6 ft solid maple workbench with steel legs. The holes in the maple table top were not properly drilled. They shipped me a new maple table top. I used it with some steel pipe fittings to build a tough and solid work bench. Great video.

Liking the video.. the disappearing knife trick in middle of video.. and small adjustments of second table to have shorter cross bar below the longer ones makes things a bit simpler..

Want to make a custom L shaped desk. Take up 2 walls of my hobby room. Be for my PC and printer, and my 2x 3D printers. Been looking at using the black pipe for the legs and frame. No casters. Looking to do this very thing instead of the gawd awfully expensive Ikea adjustable tables and desks. Love when I see this type of table/bench get made with the same materials. Love the pipework construction.

You could also add another joint at the other end so that you could knock the table down for storage. An 8 x 4 foot birch plywood makes a large smooth top for large canvas and sail sewing.

Kee Klamps and Maker Pipe are other options for fittings. Both systems use square-cut unthreaded pipes, which can be nice for DIY builds. No threads, just slip together and tighten fasteners. Their side-outlet-tees make the stretchers' position on the legs adjustable, if that's useful to do, and other options that plumbing fittings don't offer. That said, you can salvage a lot of plumbing fittings and pipes, and the Kee Klamps are a rare salvage find.

Those black iron fittings get pretty costly but sure make a quick, adaptable cart. Solid core doors are great for shop furniture. For 35 years I've had an "assembly stage", maybe 20" high, built from a masonite-skinned door someone had botched the mortices on and a set of surplus, used gurney casters. Habitat's Restores and salvage resellers are likely sources for the doors and casters. Yeah, I'm cheap.

I use the black pipe and flange with a square piece of plywood on top for a bird feeder. Just throw the seeds on top and watch the birds from you window. Pound the pipe into the ground first though.

I recommend using the standard grey galvanized pipe. The black pipe looks nicer but the standard grey is half the cost and equally as strong. Plus, since both have to be cleaned (they're coated in oil to keep them from rusting), you can paint the pipe any color you want or clear coat. It's little extra work up front but better in the long run.

I found the opposite to be true The black pipe was about half the cost of the galvanized so that was one of my reasons for using it

@@EricStrebel That's great news. I got mine from Home Depot. I should check other sources. No need to pay more if I don't have to.

What size are the casters to fit inside the 1” pipe? You linked 1 5/8 and 1 3/8
@EricStrebel
@EricStrebel 4 жыл бұрын
You need to choose 1-in insert for 1-in pipe, caster size can be whatever size you want

You forgot the pipe sealant - going to have leaks all over the place. Seriously, I've also started putting more and more things on casters in the shop/storage. Makes life so much easier. A tip for those who want to build such things with lumber - I don't know how many Simpson Strong-Tie RTC42 and RTC2Z connectors I've used over the last several years. Quick and easy way to build shelving, rolling carts, workbenches. I even built a bed and this office desk (inside stuff gets nice(r) lumber, sanded and painted satin black, work surface made from blonde laminate flooring - doesn't look half bad).

There’s a type of flanged nut (I’ve seen in 3/8” and 1/4-20) that is inserted into a (slightly) larger hole in a piece of wood. The flange has spikes that you hammer into the wood. I’ve only used the 1/4-20 (it’s very common dimension/pitch in photo accessories), but I imagine the 3/8 could be used to mount threaded casters, whether you’re building a new table or retrofitting an old one.

Awesome use of the black pipe. Useful. Home Depot employees are not helpful. Why should they care why your cutting the pipe to size? Lowes never asks me what I'm building when I need Black Pipe cut.

I agree, not sure why it matters, guess they don't want your money or mine! I have to assume they don't want people coming in there with 20 cuts for short pipes

Why weld when you can braze? Copper pipe is free for getting if you wait for the bank to foreclose on your neighbor’s house. Heck, your soon-to-be-ex-neighbor might even want to lend a hand if you catch him on the last day.
