2:48 You know things are completely mad and desperate when even Gandalf, this powerful Maiar and a symbol of wisdom and courage for most people in Middle-Earth, is just sitting in the courtyard alone, looking lost and defeated. Two interesting facts about this scene: 1) That's actually Billy Boyd, Pippin's actor, who is singing. It's not a voice double, but he himself. He's not just an actor but quite a competent singer as well. 2) The orchestral music that starts playing in the middle of the song is slightly dissonant with the melody of the song. This was completely intentional by Howard Shore, to make the scene more unnerving and sad, even creepy.
@rowanaforrest9792
@rowanaforrest9792 8 ай бұрын
I think Billy Boyd also wrote the melody and/or lyrics for this song. He has a fine voice. What a bonus that when they cast Billy Boyd, they got a singer/musician as well as an actor.

@rowanaforrest9792 Melody, perhaps, but not the lyrics. Those are part of the last verse of the walking song Frodo, Sam, and Pippin sang as they left the Shire in The Fellowship of the Ring. Merry had gone ahead with the last cartload of Frodo's belongings to Crickhollow. Funnily enough, this scene doesn't happen in quite this way. Denethor does ask if he can sing, but to the hobbit's relief does not ask him to.

For anyone who hasn't read the books, the significance of Denethor eating in front of Pippin is that Guards in Gondor were served their first meal of the day at lunch time. Pippin found waiting this long to eat particularly difficult, because Hobbits like to eat 7 meals per day (3 of which come before lunch time).

Peter Jackson is a genius. The way this scene plays out is just amazing and filled with so much emotion. I love how when pippin starts to sing you just hear the galloping of the horses, and then the strings start to come in as the riders get closer to their death. I also love that the white orc clearly screams “FIRE!” but it’s silenced which makes the sound of the arrows flying so much more impactful. I just finished the whole extended trilogy for like the 30th time with my dad and when this part came on I started bawling my eyes out just from how emotional and beautiful it was. I will say this until I die, The Lord of the Rings is and will always be the greatest story ever written and Peter Jackson brought it to life. Best movies ever made

Nothing like this appears in the story. Tolkien does not make Peregrine Took a reluctant, emotional and regretful member of the Guard of Minas Tirith, nor is Denethor a greedy, disgusting fool, nor indeed does Faramier lead a cavalry charge into a pile of rocks and bricks.

1:50 in the theater (my parents got us tickets to see it opening night, which had to be bought 6 months in advance), people whistled and cheered at this note. When he finished singing people started to clap and cheer but quickly silenced once Pippin broke down in tears. This is a very underrated scene. No one was expecting such a beautiful singing voice from Billy, and that surprise coupled with the gut punch of watching Faramir gallop towards death while his father couldn't give a damn and seeing Pippin cry was so powerful

This is my favorite scene in not just LOTR, but in all of cinema for a number of reasons. 1. The scene shows the corruption of man and its leaders, like how the governor essentially sends all of the men to their deaths. 2. It shows the results on the innocent like Pippin, who is greatly effected by what happens in this scene and after. 3. It also shows a bit of blindness by the followers and how their loyalty to this corrupt leader is the reason why they and Gondor are hopeless.

its a shame what they did to the steward in the movies, he was a much better character in the books. in the books the steward sends the red arrow to rohan ( to ask for aid) and he lights the beacons of gondor way before saurons attack. he sends farimir to defend the chokepoint at osgliith inorder to diminish the number of orcs in saurons hoard ( this works, just not as well as he thought it would). if i hadnt read the books then i would agree that this is a amazing scene, but after reading the books i cant get past how dirty they did him.

Definitely one of the most powerful scenes of the series. Nothing compares. A small army of the bravest men in existence, facing a fight where they know they will be slaughtered. That evil king got exactly what he deserved.

Tge sound mixing hsre is so top notvh. Listening to Denethor eating, the cracking of bones, slurping, and juicy chomps really underscore and help bridge these two scenes. Really masterful

In the book it says that Pippin only knows funny minecraft parody songs and similar like Don't Mine at Night, Chug Jug with You and Noldolantë so he doesn't want to sing and Denny doesn't make him after initially asking, at which the halfling is (briefly) relieved. In the film Denethor does make him sing, but he chooses this song, as he considers it to be the upmost comedic genius ever put to note paper and wants to share it with his dear new friend and lord Denny. I think this is a fair enhancement to the character on the part of PJ and Boyd, as I always thought it strange that book Pippin didn't want to share the hillairity of his favorite Maglor songs with Denethor, making him look selfish and unfriendly which is not Tolkien's intention for the character except the selfish part.

I like to think that the orcs had a bit of respect for the men, knowing they were going to die but still having the courage to ride on and face death

This is besides the point but the Orc at 0:36 is said to be imaged after Harvey Weinstein. It makes me laugh every time I rewatch LOTR.

In the book, more than one person returns from the attack, and Pippin was asked if he could sing, but never did.

After watching Rings of Power; I feel pretty certain Edge of Night was sung when the Halflings were still wanderers. It contains all that lovely sorrowful and yet hopeful imagery like Wandering Day.

I find it a bit sad how they portrayed Denethor in the movies. In the books, I read him as a way more nuanced person. He was a great leader who fought Sauron for a long time and was very successful doing so (even the scene with Pippin lighting the beacons was added in the movies, in the books they were already lit when they arrived). He had his weaknesses, but the main problem wasn't that Denethor was an asshole by himself, but that he used his Palantir to confront Sauron and that Sauron used that connection to drive him closer and closer to madness. He actually was kind of a tragic person.
