Here's a thing: from the deleted scenes for pirates 3 - Beckett had Jack transporting 100 slaves, the Jack set free ("people ain't cargo, mate"), for which Beckett had Jack's ship, The Wicked Wench burned, and sank. Jack's deal with Jones was to raise the Wench from the depths, which was blackened from the fire, and renamed it Black Pearl - that's why Jones demanded 100 souls.

Ok, fun fact from the art nerd: Davey Jones's skin texture is created from a styrofoam cup! They were trying to make him look right, and someone saw the stains from coffee on a used cup and decided to scan it and play around with it in whatever program they used. Always thought that was hella cool.

11:12 - The Black Spot comes from the novel Treasure Island. It was originally just a black mark on paper and it was a message that meant 'your old crew mates have decided you need to die.' They made it into a festering supernatural curse for this movie. 16:53 - The movie doesn't do a good job of explaining it, but the goal of this game is to bet on how many times a number appears on ALL of the players' dice. What you're trying to do is scare off your opponents so they never learn if you're lying or not (hence the name 'Liar's Dice). You know your own dice, but not your opponents', so it's all about bluffing.

Liar's Dice: If a person bets that there are, say, three 4s total on the table, you have to bet at least one more of a number to continue play, i.e. four 2s, or a higher face number, i.e. three 5s (or you can do both - four 5s). The round ends when someone calls out someone else for either being a liar (i.e. they bet too high, like if they bet five 5s and there were only four), or that they're, "Spot On," i.e. they bet the exact number of a die face on the table. If you're wrong in calling them a liar or saying they're spot on, you lose the round, but if you're correct (either way) you win the round. Each player starts with five dice, and the loser of each round loses one of their dice. The last player to have a die/multiple dice in their hand, wins the game. There are variants of course, but that's the basic one.

Barbosa wasn't the original owner of the Black Pearl. Jack was. you see the Black Pearl was originally a slave ship, Jack freed the slaves and burned the ship, that's how it turned Black. in the process he died, he made the deal with Davy Jones to be the Pearls Captain for 10 years. 2 years into being the captain Jack's first mate (Barbosa) mutinied on him and stole The Pearl for his own leaving Jack stranded which was the first movie's plot, as they went after the cortez cursed gold and became undead. This was the follow up story were Davy Jones came to collect Jack for his debt. Now that he has claimed Jack Will, Elizabeth, and now Barbosa are setting sail to get both Jack and the Pearl back from Davy Jone's locker. which is the 3rd movie in the franchise.

*_13 years_* actually. And Barbosa doesn't "Join Will, Elizabeth, and Gibbs to get the Pearl back" until the 3rd movie: At World's End. *_This_* movie's plot is Davy Jones sending the Kraken after Jack, in attempt to get Jack the key to Davy Jones' chest, Will plays a game of dice to free his daddy; Bootstrap Bill, and James Norrington gets Jones' heart to Beckett after a 3-Way sword fight with Will & Jack.

14:03 Quite a bit was fully CGI; Davy Jones was essentially Bill Nighy in a gray motion capture outfit and the CGI character built around him. Certain shots like Will carefully moving aside his tentacles while Jones slept in order to get the key were done in camera with stand-in tentacles but were later enhanced with CGI to complete the illusion. The complexity of the effects is one reason these films were so incredibly expensive. Much of the film was shot on the open ocean or in water tanks with ship sets on gimbals but CGI was also used extensively. You really should watch some of the making-of documentaries on the DVDs for these films in order to get a better understanding of how they were done. The blooper reels are hilarious as well.

Barbossa was the captain in the first film, yes. However, he’s not the “original” captain. Jack was the captain before the mutiny. There’s a backstory of Jack having the Pearl (under a different name) before he was a pirate. You can find that, but wait until after you watch At World’s End (there were supposed to be scenes in that film indicating the backstory, but they can now be found in deleted scenes. It does relate to all the people outside Tia Dalma’s following Jack’s Kraken encounter)

I mean, considering her feelings about Jack and what she's actually done, and how... to quote from The Godfather: "There are things that have to be done and you do them and you never talk about them. You don't try to justify them. They can't be justified. You just do them. Then you forget it." I imagine that's what she's instinctively chosen to do, and I can't blame her. Also, just imagine the talk: "So, yeah, I doomed a man I kinda liked to certain death so we could escape alive, but I *love* you and of course I'd never do something like this to you, Will". Yeah, that'll imporve the trust between them for sure.

According to legend, The Flying Dutchman was a ship that was trying to cross the Cape of Good Hope during a storm. While his crew tried to tell him to turn around he defiantly shouted to the sky "I shall cross the Cape of Good Hope even if it takes till doomsday". God heard his challenge and now sailors will sometimes see a phantom ship attempting to cross the cape.

Jack made a deal with Davy Jones to Raise the Black Pearl from the depths of the sea; where he was to be Captain for 13 years and then serve Davy Jones on the Flyinf Dutchman. However, three years in as Captain Barbossa (Jack's First Mate) mutiny'd and marooned Jack on that Rum Cache island. Barbossa has been Captain of the Black Pearl LONGER, but Jack was still the original Captain. But we don't actually KNOW who was Captain before Jack.

Those looks of disgust throughout the reaction were killing me 😂 you're so darn funny lol. Fun fact, the character in SpongeBob was just named after the famous ghost ship which is of course named the Flying Dutchman. And Davy Jones wasn't nessacarily linked to the Flying Dutchman from the original legend. It was a man named Vander Deckan who had an encounter with the ship. Davy Jones was said to be a sea demon that would drag unfortunate sailors to the bottom of the sea, nicknamed as Davy Jones' locker. Though I loved how Disney came up with an original story for Davy Jones! These films are amazing! ❤

As good as the animation is in this film, it pales in comparison with Ashleigh’s animated reactions! This girl is a sheer delight 😁 Still, props to the VFX guys at ILM. Aside from Bootstrap Bill, whose encrustations were all practical make-up appliances, all of Davy Jones’ crew were 100% computer generated creations. John Knoll and his team at ILM figured out a way to achieve motion capture on-stage and on location that didn’t interfere with shooting, so all the characters’ performances were captured live instead of having to be recreated in a motion capture stage weeks or months after the fact. The CG characters were then animated to match the actors on set, and composited over them. It’s incredible work. For Davy Jones himself, the FX guys were unsure whether they could create a 100% CG performance that did justice to Bill Night’s performance, so they had the actor wear make-up around his mouth and eyes as insurance, just in case they needed to keep those elements. As it turned out, the animation and the look of Davy Jones was so good that they didn’t need to keep anything at all. It’s a completely synthetic performance, key-frame animated to match what Nighy was doing, and to this day it stands as a landmark in CG character animation, second only Gollum.

This movie and its follow up, AT WORLD’S END (2007), continue the stories of Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner, as well as James Norrington and the pirates Pintel and Ragetti, and completes what is essentially a trilogy, but it pretty much ends there. The fourth and fifth films are separate stories entirely, with some characters carried over and new ones introduced. The latter two feel noticeably different from the first three. They’re not bad, but they’re not quite as engaging, IMHO. The first three films are so epic and so well done that they’re awfully hard to follow up with something as good, let alone better.

The Voodoo Queen’s swamp was built on a stage…you had to wear rubber pants to get to it. Davy Jones’ makeup was practical with visual effects added. The ships were also built on stages and used hydraulics to make them rock back and forth. Also the entire inside of the boats were rubber so if people fell it wouldn’t hurt. Davey Jones and his crew are 100% CGI. The actors wore motion capture suits on set. Even their clothes are CGI.

Elizabeth is ashamed of what she did to Jack and is afraid of what Will would think of her essentially murdering him. Will thinks she loves Jack and is mourning his death. They can’t clear anything up with communication because the non-romantic reason she kissed Jack is the thing she wants no one to find out about. If Will confronted her about the kiss, she’d likely think the lesser of two evils is letting Will think she loved and wanted Jack rather than admitting what she did and Will judging her as a murderer.

Love your reactions Ashleigh. The technical term that you are looking for is 'practical effects', obviously movie make up is a big portion of that. Camera angles, minatures, explosions are all other examples of practical effects. Keep it up!

You do seem to have at least a mild case of trypophobia, which is an aversion to small repetitive holes, not necessarily a straight up fear. And the Black Pearl wasn't originally Barbossa's ship, it was Jack's. Barbossa and crew took it from Jack via mutiny.

Here's a fun fact: when working out how Davy Jones' beard should look and move, the animators at first studied documentary footage about octopuses, but found very little usable material in it. Where they did find plenty of reference material was in a screening of _King Kong vs Godzilla_ (1962); early on in that movie, there's a scene where a giant octopus attacks a village before being driven off by Kong, and it was played by a real octopus

Another “school movie” that you would probably enjoy is Revenge Of The Nerds. Certain elements of the movie haven’t exactly aged well, but by and large the movie is still absolutely hilarious. It’s a perfect movie for your “back to school” September theme, and one that will probably cause you to bust a gut laughing. Just a little something to think about.
@ssort69

It most certainly fit the theme! I loved that movie growing up as I was a nerd, not as bad as those guys, though one smart-a$$ did get to calling me Encyclopedia Brown which I loathed.
@Thundarr100

@@ssort69 I loved it growing up too. It was so satisfying watching the nerds getting revenge on the jocks. Especially since, like you, I was also a nerd. Although I was less the “Lewis and Gilbert” type of nerd and more the “Booger” kind of nerd. Except I had less self confidence than Booger did in the movie. And I’m pretty sure I was less creepy. I certainly didn’t pick my nose in public, that’s for sure.

Saw this movie in theaters. It was the LAST movie I managed to see in theaters until my ex took me on a date to see the Avengeres in 2012. The ending had every single person in that theater LIVID. We were all about to show up at Disney with a lynching party and demanding the next movie within a month 😂😂 It was so abrupt and such a wild cliffhanger that we never saw coming. I remember crying from frustration lol Everything in my life was turning upside down around that time and I knew I’d never get to see the next movie in a theater and would need to wait for the DVD release. I managed to, ahem, “acquire” a copy of the third movie VERY early and my family all got together to watch it. It was the last movie my whole family got to see together.

I've not read all comments on this one, or the first Pirates movie, but I always got a kick out of the fact that Mr. Gibbs is the older man who told Elizabeth Swann to stop singing the pirate song....and by the time Elizabeth has grown up, we find the same Mr. Gibbs sleeping with pigs, and is a constant in all of Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
