You don't want members of the crew fighting over the affections of the one woman on board when you're in the middle of the Atlantic Also Pirates actually followed quite a few rules, some of which were business practices which weren't common at the time. Examples of a few; All members of the crew get an equal vote The loot is split equally (aside from the agreed upon increases based on rank; Captain and Quartermaster get double, Master Gunner and Boatswain 1.5 shares, and all other officers 1.25 shares) and any man who cheats another on pay is to be punished No gambling on the ship No lights on after 8. Any man wishing to drink must do so on the deck without lights Each pirate must upkeep their own equipment No children or women on board (any man caught sneaking a woman on board is to be punished) Deserters will be punished No fighting on the ship. Any quarrel will be settled on land by a duel overseen by the Quartermaster You shall be payed a pension if you are wounded beyond ability to continue work (that's why it's called severance pay. Because a limb was severed) "This treasure is One-eyed Willy's treasure. Fight me on it" If it was the same treasure One-eyed Willy wouldn't be dead.

This is some extra info. Long ago Jack Sparrow was the captain of a ship called the Wicked Wench and he loved his ship dearly. He would use it to transport goods and such. One day he got a job from the East India Trading Company leader Cutler Beckett to transport some “cargo”. Jack found out the cargo was slaves and instead he released them. As punishment Beckett had a P branded on to his arm forever marking him as a pirate and then forced him to watch as they burned the Wicked Wench and it sank. Jack then made a deal with Davy Jones to raise his beloved ship from the depths in return for future service. When the ship was raised however the wood was all still burnt black and he decided to rename the ship the Black Pearl.

They didn’t go down with the ship because they were Becketts “merchandise” and he wouldn’t lose his money like that. That makes sense to me. Jack Sparrow is a very complex character here, so Johnny's acting also has to be profound to pull it off, which he did phenomenally. By ep5, Jack is little more than a more charismatic Jar Jar Binks, the embodiment of dumb luck. There's less for Johnny to act out so to speak and so he just comes across more and more goofy.

4:33 the tang is the part of the metal that is contained within the handle, the extension of the single piece of metal the blade is actually shaped out of. It’s what allows for the balance he demonstrates when holding it on his fingers. This is essential for being able to move the sword quickly while fencing because otherwise it would be unbalanced and more like swinging a 2x4. I have a sword intended only for display and trust me, you can feel the lack of balance compared to one intended for combat. To answer your question, yes, the way it’s balanced shows how skilled the blacksmith making it (Will in this case) is at making very good swords.

The corset thing is a bit of a myth, actually. Most corsets weren't made in a way that would prevent breathing for most of history, with a short period in Victorian times where they were just badly made. Usually, you were able to run, leap and move about in one without trouble. Having women fainting and dying all the time would probably have stopped the use of them very quickly.
@katherinemorelle71152 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Also, they weren’t corsets at that time. 18th century stays could not be tight laced due to only having hand sewn eyelets. Also fun fact: the fainting fad during the late regency period was actually pretty short lived, and had nothing to do with stays (which were completely unrestrictive at that point in time) and was mostly just a fashionable thing that women did on purpose. When everyone got sick of it, it stopped. Before corsets came along with the ability to squish the waist in a bit more than before. So it definitely had nothing to do with corsetry, and eventually became a literary symbol for shock and delicacy.

When this movie was announced, some were skeptic. It's based on a Disney Parks ride. An iconic and amazing ride, (the original version opened at Disneyland in 1967 & is celebrating it's 55th anniversary this year), but we had no idea how it would translate onto the big screen. Well, we were all blown away and it had just the right amount of references to the ride (the dog with the key, the "Yo-Ho" song, the Tortuga scene was filled with ride callbacks. Most fans of the ride loved the movie & it did so well they added Jack Sparrow to the ride at all the parks around the world. They even did the red carpet premier AT Disneyland itself (they built a big screen on Tom Sawyer Island and set up bleacher seating across the river in New Orleans Square - where the Pirates ride is located at the park). There are currently 5 movies in this series. The jar of dirt you know from the meme is in the 2nd movie (that's all I'll say about that).

Plus some other ride references were saved for the sequel movies too. Still one of my favorite movies. Its so much fun!

This is one of those extremely rare lightning in a bottle movies. The advertising for it was cool but we had NO idea what we were really in for going to see this. The word of mouth on this film was instant and incredibly intense and rocketed it to major blockbuster status. There's an hour long video breaking down why the writing on this film is some of the best out there... just how much info is given to you in what is shown and what is not said. The script is very tight and extremely light on exposition. The action is really good. The comedy works perfectly and doesn't feel forced as later films kinda do. The cast is just amazing. A fun film! provided that the numerous historical inaccuracies are ignored. For example, the film repeats the myth that women were forced by anyone to wear uncomfortable corsets. Women wore them if they wanted to. At this point in time, some men wore corsets, so it wasn't even exclusively a women's garment. They were not normally uncomfortable because they were custom made and were only uncomfortable if worn incorrectly. In fact, comfort and supposedly reducing back pain were often top selling points. Great performances by Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightly, and Sir Jonathan Pryce!

7:37 It’s a clever thing they did. They showed how he did it, if you rewatch that bit, but unless you know what to look for, it’s hard to notice. Here’s the trick: The chain between his cuffs is fairly long, long enough for him to put his hands together, throw the now folded chain over, and then move one hand out to catch the loop that’s now been thrown over. I’ll try to draw an ASCII diagram, but it won’t be easy. ___________ _/ ____/ ___/ (::) Actually doing that trick would require precise timing and immense dexterity, to grab both halves near the wrists with one hand, throw the loop over, and use the other hand to catch the loop. Not to mention, enough grip strength to keep the chain from slipknotting out of position while holding up your entire body weight. Look for it closely, and you’ll see that it’s exactly what Johnny does, and that the Pirates team made sure that all continuity like that was accounted for. If there’s a lot of things the Pirates franchise got right (and there are), one of them is continuity level 99.

"Ya best start believin in ghost stories missie, cuz yer in one." is STILL IMHO one of the greatest lines in cinema history. Also, they're not zombies. They ARE some type of undead, but not zombies. More akin to skeletons, but also with ghost-like characteristics. And their "true form" can only be seen in direct moonlight. Zombies are incognizant. Not just dumb or unintelligent, not even enough of a brain to realize individuality let alone think. The skeleton-ghost pirates can talk and think and feel emotion and everything. Skeletons can't talk so that's out. Ghosts can't interact with physical objects (such as weapons) so they're out. Plus, they're not /precisely/ undead. They're cursed. If they lose the curse they're back to normal. Undead can't be turned back to normal. Apologies if I'm being over-pedantic.

Merchant mariner here. The sailors have always been extremely superstitious. The "women on board" is an old superstition. Actually one of the oldest. It is said that women on board is bad luck, because they distract men from their duties. In the past, some voyages took long time and, naturally, this would affect the sailors. Imagine that you have a bunch of horny as hell men who haven't seen a woman for months, and one comes aboard. So there you go. P.S. Here is a fun fact for you - black cats actually are a symbol of good luck to sailors. It is because they are better hunters and deal better with rats onboard the vessels. It is believed that sailors started bringing black cats onboard around the 14th century, to deal with rats which then were the main carriers of the bubonic plague (the fleas on the rats, but still). Because of their black fur, they were harder to be spotted by rats in the dark, which made them more efficient hunters. The sailors loved them so much that in time they became a symbol of good luck.

If you like this, you should try the movie that "started" the movie pirate fandom. Without "The Black Swan" (1942), there would be no pirate movies... and this movie pays a number of tributes to it, from "The Black Pearl" to Elizabeth SWAN. Walt Disney himself on multiple occasions credited "The Black Swan" as a source of inspiration for the Disneyland ride that inspired this movie. About the "tang is the full width of the blade" thing. Yes, that makes it a balanced sword. It is tempting for a blademaker to use less resources and make a cheaper product, but it is important for the grippy part to be about the same weight as the long blade part so it is easier to handle... hence when he balances it on his hand the balance point is close to the hand guard. "Parlay" = "Parle" = French word for "speak".

He chose to stop entering competitions as Jack at our local conventions here in Denver because he kept winning! Lol Great reaction Ashleigh, can't wait to see the rest.

Thank you for mentioning the scruffy dog. That was one of my favorite parts of the ride and I loved everything about that ride. I loved the ambience... the fireflies in the bog, the spanish moss hanging from the trees... just, everything. I'm in my fifties and I haven't been on that ride in decades but I still remember so much.

@@skanecmt They've policially-correctized the ride in recent years. Which is a shame.

I had a friend that did a great Captain Jack, SHE would even get hired to do local birthday parties as Captain Jack!

@@Capohanf1 Nice! We had/have a young lady out here who did a pretty good Jack too. They used to both get hired for parties and events, but he was the "bigger catch." He also does a mean Jon Snow and Aragorn. Came with some friends to my "pub" for a Ranger event (before covid blargh) and not only did we have a great time and feast but he and a few others sang the Dwarven song from the Hobbit...Far over the Misty Mountains... Damn Covid!

Great reaction. Johnny Depp is amazing as is the rest of the cast, but this franchise is all about Kiera Knightley for me and it's no coincidence that they stopped being good when she stopped being in them.

Yes, I thought that the movies went downhill when Elizabeth and Will disappeared. They added something vital to the movies.

A Johnny Depp movie that I liked a lot at the time & has been mostly forgotten (I haven't seen it since) is Nick of Time (1995). It was also his first action film if I recall correctly. Same director as Wargames - John Badham.

Fun fact: They didn't want Johnny Depp to have gold teeth. He just showed up with a mouth full of them on set. They hated it and negotiated down to a reasonable number. That was roughly the number he wanted, he started with extra sobhe could negotiate.

Reminds me of some directors who intentionally put bad takes into their movies so when the producer looks at it, they'll tell them to remove said takes, and won't touch anything else.
@alanholck79952 жыл бұрын
@@Jay-ln1co I have heard this being called a 'hairy hand'. Back in the era of Rembrandt, a portrait artist would paint hair on the hand of the subject, and the subject would object that they didn't have hair on their hand. The hand was easy to fix - the huge nose on their face was not easy to fix. So, create a diversion with a hairy hand.

It was fun listening to Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski talking on the DVD commentary about how Depp tricked the producer with the teeth thing, and hearing the producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, talking on the same commentary track (though recorded separately) about how he had to talk Johnny Depp out of having a mouthful of gold teeth! I sometimes wonder if Bruckheimer ever found out the truth…

The pirate with the wooden eye is played by Mackenzie Crook, a well known British comedy actor, who was first famous for the British version of The Office. Most recently he's written, directed, and starred in some very well loved series in the UK, Detectorists and Worzel Gummidge.

Ashleigh, if you like pirate movies, I'd strongly recommend Cutthroat Island. It stars Gena Davis (who you saw in A League Of Their Own, and The Fly) as a kickass pirate captain. It also has the kid who played the oldest brother, Francis, on Malcolm In The Middle, and the bad guy is played by the great Frank Langela who I don't think you've seen in anything yet.

The thing that makes this movie so unique is how it plays with the central theme of "sometimes doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is good in of itself" as well as piracy and how its perceived by characters This is actually what makes Jack such a cool protagonist , on top of not exactly being the most moral guy around and the fact that he acts like a fool when in reality he's usually the smartest guy in the room. He's basically the childlike fantasy of pirates brought to life. Jack isn't in it for the loot and the hedonism per say , he's in it for the high seas & adventure into the unknown. Which SHARPLY contrasts him with Barbossa who is WAY more accurate to what pirates were actually like historically Greedy, petty and ruthless to a fault even to their most trusted comrades And characters like Norringron treat them as such, until he gets his perspective change at the end. Then in the middle we have Elizabeth and Will The former seeing piracy ,ironically the same way Jack does, as a path to real personal freedom While the latter comes to the same conclusion as Norrington , that you can be a criminal and a bit of a selfish douche,but still be a decent person The movie also had a lot of stuff you wouldn't think it could get away with Like, teaching kids to not judge people at first glance is fine But a message like: " If doing the right thing requires an act of piracy, then piracy can in of itself be the right course." Is pretty morally gray for a movie aimed at kids, not to mention that people straight get brutally murdered all throughout the movie
