I find it amazing how big an effect tyres can have on a sports car. If you went into a dealer and bought an M2 on one set of tyres you might not be particularly impressed with it, but be blown away by it on another set. People don't understand this enough. Keep it up, great video

100%. I bought a C63s AMG wagon. It came from the dealer with Dunlop Sportmaxx RT2's, and I thought the car was rubbish. The ride was awful, it really struggled for traction, the front end just didn't want to turn, and I ended up putting the car on consignment. I got a call from the dealer saying that the car was sold on the condition that I put new tyres on it. I went for Michelin PS4S and the car was COMPLETELY different. I'd already allocated the money to other things and couldn't keep it, but the tyres made all the difference :(

I have tried almost every tire brand including those cheap ones, I couldn't forget how well balance and grippy a michelin tire was, how pointy a yokohama can be, and how durable a bridgestone can last. Recently I have changed a set of Giti S2 and I can assure you it is basically a cheaper version of Michelin PS4. It saves my wallet and satisfaction by a big margin, I hope Giti is keeping their quality without increasing its' price. Last but not least, I have to thank tyrereview's professional and honest review throughout the years, it is really helpful when we are looking for the better deals! Keep up the good work guys!

Tyre reviews, what psi did you run in each set of tires???? Because as you know a track tire like Trofeo R will respond very well in a car weighing similar to an M2 at between 28 and 33psi hot and a street tire will run 33-40psi hot. Heres the tricky part, if you've done any study at all on the r888 you will realise the sidewalls are quite soft, and this becomes worse once warm. Toyo actually recommend varying tire pressures as per the weight of the car and they are unusually high but work extremely well. This is what I have found, 1400-1600kg car should run 36-42psi hot. Which takes about 2 laps off the life until they overheat and you need a cooldown lap, however the grip for the 5 laps before that are unreal. Many track days ive heard people complain about their r888's and EVERY single one of them are running close to 30psi hot. I instantly facepalm and offer a suggestion, we pump them up and send them back out. A bmw z4 improved his time by 6 seconds, an r35 gtr by 3 seconds, and a Supra by 5 seconds on a 1min 40 lap circuit. As soon as my car drops below 36psi you can safely knock 1.5 seconds off my lap time. Nobody runs an r compound semi slick that high, but with r888 you need to, and its a big improvement. I have turned people from hating the tire to now saying its the only thing they will run. Im assuming you ran them too low, because anyone who says the toyo is noisy is obviously running them below 36psi. Its actually quieter than the trofeo R if you run the pressures correctly, tho i am still faster by 0.15 of a second on the trofeo r, having about 60 laps under my belt with the trofeo r and well over 100 with the r888.
@tyrereviews5 жыл бұрын
Great information, thank you. In the interests of keeping things fair, we ran all three tyres at the same pressure, which I think was 35psi hot.

I have the same experience with the P Zero. Fenomenal tire in the dry, but very twitchy in the wet. The Pirellis are the best you can get for dry grip. Downside is their price and the fact they wear and tear faster than any other A brand tire I ever had. The only one that is probably a better overall package than the Pirelli will be the Michelin PS Cup. They are slightly more expensive, but they offer almost as much grip in the dry, are extremely good in the wet (probably as good as a semi slick can get) and they don't wear nearly as fast as the Pirelli.
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
You've nailed how I feel about these tyres, the Pirelli was included as I wanted the ultimate dry lap. Michelin now make the Cup 2 R which is more dry focused.

Late to the party here, but having run R888s and assorted 200tw rubber (Old Dunlop Z1s, Nitto NT05, and currently Falken RT615K+) I always felt like they were close to the same in one-lap absolute pace. The Toyos put up with heat a little better in longer driving sessions, but sacrifice a lot of road comfort to do so (which is whatever because that's not what they're made for).

Interesting how the market is different in the UK vs. North America: Trofeo R - heat cycles out instantly so only for people with lots of money who won't buy Hoosier R7's; R888 - trashed by pretty much everyone in North America sooo hard at introduction years ago - everybody wanted a better RA-1 - that Toyo almost instantly started importing the R888R, which is so (relatively) slow that '200' (ha!) treadwear tires like the RE-71R are typically faster, albeit nowhere near as long-lasting on track; and I've never heard of the third tire - but I would caution against saying anything about a prototype tire. The 200 treadwear market is huge in North America due to competition rulesets, with everything from tires good for only a couple hot laps (RE-71R) to tires good for endurance races all wearing the '200' rating. Still, it is nice to see what is available in other countries. Keep up the great work, and plan on running street cars with a full tank!
@krichd16 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 200 treadwear market is very interesting in North America. I think the best is the Yokohama ADVAN A052, it has better grip than the RE-71R and last longer. For endurance race, the Hankook RS4 still would be my choose. Best bang for the buck is definitely the Accelera 651 Sport right now.
@aiGeis6 жыл бұрын
Bullshit, r888s were out for over a decade before r888r was introduced, and nearly everyone stateside runs them as a budget semi-slick. Furthermore, treadwear ratings don't really mean anything, if you knew anything about tires you would know that.

Tyre Reviews I used to have to R888 in 215/45 R17 and 235/45R17 on my s2000. I just replaced them with 215/45R17 - 245/40R17 Michelin PS4S tires from the US to Belgium as they're only delivered in Europe from 17" onwards. However the rear is how much to planted and I have considerably understeer at turn in. I'm now considering replacing them with PS4 in 225/45R17 for the fronts and 235/45R17 on the rear. What do you think from your experience? I also run a gt86 on Michelin PSS in 215/45R17 and I like the oversteer behavior. So that's also what I'm checking in the S2000.

Can´t believe they´ve lasted for so long. And I drive a lot. I especially like their grip during rainy weather. They´re very, very good for wet driving. I´ve actully pushed them quite far on the wet as well as higher speeds on the dry. Now, the MPS4 tires should be good for going fast around bends in both wet and dry. These tires are all "semi-slick" type which will be less suitable in wet conditions. Personally I'm more off a touring type of driver with touring tyres to experience the best of both worlds. Never had the opportunity to try Pirelli tyres though.

Intersting comparison, I would not rely on a Giti tire to fit my car before but after looking to the video, I could envisage it. Need to look to other performances like "wear" to make the good choice. Impressive to see how budget tire can sometimes get close to premium brands...

Do you recommend the Giti Sport when they hit the shelves as a permanent trofeo replacement on a 5th generation Z28 even though manufacturer recommends the trofeo? I’m looking for a tire that doesn’t dry rot as quick as the trofeo does in the Utah desert.
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
I'd need to do more dry testing for that. Can you define dry rot?
@72FrostyOne6 жыл бұрын
Yes sir, the dry desert heat pulls the moisture from the tires to the point the start cracking and splitting, especially in the side walls. My trofeo’s lasted less than one year because of the dryness or lack of humidity in the air.
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
@@72FrostyOne Ah I see. The problem with track tyres is they have quite a lot of natural rubber, which dry heat pulls the oils out of. I'm not sure what tyre woudl work best to avoid this, maybe the Cup 2's as they've a more balanced compound.

Thank you for a great video, as always. It would be good to mention what alignment the tyres were tested with. Assuming it was stock on the BMW, with zero camber in the front, no surprise you couldn’t get confidence with R888s. Due to tyre construction R888 likes significant negative camber, at least -2.5 or more. And that’s what most serious track guys would run anyways. Trofeo Rs are frequently fitted on super cars, which tend to have have zero camber due to their intended regular road use. With a serious track set-up of a more common track car, most people (think old Bimmer owners) would probably be able to get much closer results between R888 and the Pirellis, at half the cost. Would be really interesting if you make a test on a track-ready car with front camber alignment.
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
It's a good point, but sadly in the scope of this sort of test customising the cars setup for each tyre is impossible, so we usually run stock for fairness, as that's how a lot of people will run. I plan to make another video where we go into setup adjustment etc, it will be complicated to make though so won't be for a while

I run the continental extreme on my Subaru wrx . I live in the north of Boston area(NH). They are fantastic in the rain and snow and very good for dry handling. My wrx came brand new with summer performance Dunlop’s. In the dry there isn’t enough difference to tell in performance between the two.

did you get to measure the actual section widths? Some tires for a given size measure much wider than others. Also, treadwear ratings? I guess I can google that but it would give a little insight as to life. Have you driven any of the good 200tw tires to compare to the gtr3?
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
They all have to fit inside a range so there won't be huge variances. The Giti is 220 treadwear, I didn't note the other two, sorry.
@ebigford346 жыл бұрын
no worries.. I looked, the Trofeo R is 60 and the R888 is 100, drastically different than a 220 tire. The fact that it did well against the R888 is great. Have you tried the Direzza ZII star spec, the Bridgestone Potenza RE-71 or any of the yokohama advan tires?

What are the wheels you were using? I've been looking for a good y-spoke wheel and really like the one you are using.
Thanks for you vids, that's not easy to find that kind of serious tyre test in the internet ! Could you also review tyres in smaller dimensions ? I have to fit 17'' trackdays tyre on my GT86, there's not much choices available and I really don't know what to choose... I want to keep my car fun without too much grip (bye bye PSCup2), but I don't want either a tyre that will overheat after 5 laps (Bye bye PS4, Eagle F1...). Any thoughts ??? Yokohama AD08R maybe ?

Did you dial in pressures for each tire for a fair comparison?
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
Yes of course :) Each tyre went through the same process, 4 hard warm up laps, into the pits to reset the pressures then back out for the runs.
@petereacmen7166 жыл бұрын
Tyre Reviews excellent! Some tires like to run at different hot pressures. Using tire temp (inboard outboard and center) or chalk on the sidewall will allow you to dial in the correct pressure for each tire make/model.
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
I plan to do a tyre pressure tuning video at some point in the future, it's proving quite difficult to plan as if you were to do it properly you would need a new set of tyres for every tyre pressure change!

I think the missing piece of this video is the affect that alignment will have one these tires. When you get into higher performance tires especially track day tires, a tire like the toyo needs a much more aggressive alignment than that M2 has to really take advantage of the tire. Not that i'm a fan of the toyo, I just think it's worth mentioning. I would like to a see a test on the Nitto nt01, which uses a similar compound to the r888 with a different tread pattern. I would also like to see something like a hoosier r6 vs the pirelli and also the latest sport cup's vs the pirelli and possibly the nt01
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
I agree cambers would have helped all three tyres, but it was a little outside of the scope of this video. I will be doing a bigger track day tyre test, but sadly we don't get the Nitto or Hoosier brand in the UK :/

@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
Hot pressures, we went out for 3 laps and got heat into the tyres then came in and reset the pressures to the target.
@shinysideup21346 жыл бұрын
That seems low. Toyo recommend about 32-33 in cold pressure for cars over 1400kg and 37-40 psi when they are hot. Then to behave well R888 want at least 2-4 degrees camber. Thats my experience.
@larsweinand40356 жыл бұрын
What build year is the M2? Mine got a SW update in January and I did not have the limb mode issue with mine on track even with an almost empty tank. It would be awesome if you'd also talk about tire pressures you used during the day on the tires. I also noted that you did not seem to have used the pressure sensors on the wheels, which is a helpful thing to have at a trackday, since you're able to see the tire pressures and temperatures of the (air inside the) tires in the idrive menu. Looking forward to your next video :)
@tyrereviews6 жыл бұрын
As we had three sets of wheels we couldn't mount the pressure sensors, but we were getting all the tyres up to temperature then adjusting the pressures to an even level for all tyres (30/32). Not sure on the build date of the M2, it was a rental. From my research online it's an issue with the passive fuel pump pumping from the left to right of the tank and only happens on very fast, long right handers. Which cadwell park has!
@larsweinand40356 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! That makes total sense. I drove mine on a small track, without fast right corners so no wonder I did not run into it. Still really loved to read the tire pressure in real time in the idrive, especially without me having to much track experience yet
