Totally subjective, yes. I have been listening to and playing music since the 70s. I listen to everything from Mozart to Motorhead and enjoy each in different ways. The whole idea that music is somehow better because one must stay within the bounds of rules is without merit. Yes, much of popular music is simple, easy to play and yet it strikes a chord and, at times, lasts. It's been a while since a band like Tame Impala has surfaced. My gut is telling me they are here to stay.

the point is, is that formally, and largely practiced 100 years ago, there is a system of right and wrong ways to do things. even composers who strove to stretch the limits largely followed these rules. the problem is is that people who didn't take the time to learn these rules started making popular music in the 50's and onwards. and even in the dumbed down world of current artists there are still ways to reference the achiements of the long history of music
