HBO Max decided to dive into the adult animation arena with VELMA, the Scooby Doo spinoff from Mindy Kaling. Despite negative reviews from pretty much everyone, the show seems to be the talk of the Internet. Or maybe that’s because of them…
Velma definitely raises some questions. Like where’s Scooby Doo in the Scooby Doo show? Why is every single character just a completely different person than the character they’re based on? Why is everyone so mean? Why does everyone love Velma? Why are they trying so hard to be snarky and meta?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Velma.

@@weldonwin Technically, it's more like a season 1b. Apparently, what happens is animation studios usually receive orders for a number of episodes which are then usually split into two seasons. It's not that season 2 has been 'approved,' it's that it's already bought and paid for and HBO Max will have to drop those episodes knowing they'll go down like a narcoleptic hooker. That's the only laugh this show is getting out of me. 😂

She loved to brag about how much she identified with Velma, and how Velma wasn't tied to her whiteness as a character...so she raceswapped her and mutated the character into the same, tired, boring, appalling self-insert Mindy always plays in every role she's ever had. Disclaimer: I don't object to raceswapping out of hand, but when Mindy out and out admits as above there wasn't really a reason to do it beyond an utterly superficial selfish choice because Mindy is that colour and Mindy is more important than Velma...why do it?
@jlawsl
@jlawsl Жыл бұрын
@@Blisterdude123 Race swapping is lazy. If the show, movie, or book has existed and is culturally relevant to a point where the characters and literature are common knowledge, then changing races based simply on them not being white is pretty racist and revisionist. For one, it lends to the thought that modern, diverse writers can't make new, engaging content themselves but only mutate and revise classic literature. On the other hand, it makes a point that having white people in a role is wrong, to the point that instead of, lets say, just adding new characters, the writers change everything about them. Then, they make it their objective, as in Velma with Fred, to make any white character who isn't LGBT and especially male, to be the most pathetic, worthless, stupid or evil character in the show. Imagine if Black Panther race swapped to white and/or other colors of cast? All of Wakanda was changed, from motif to their personalities. The Black Panther was turned white, all of the women soldiers were mixed and the only black guys showed up as typical racial stereotypes of bumbling, hood, ghetto guys that always mess up. That would be, rightfully called bigotted and racist because it would be making a point that the show, as it was, with an all black main cast, as written, was not good enough. So, race swapping is something I think that people should be against, even if the source material is 10 years old or even 200 years old. Unless an okay to casting is given by the original creators. For example, people threw a fit when Scarlett Johansson was cast as the MC in Ghost in the Shell, even though it was the Japanese producers that wanted her. Not to mention, she played a person in a customized android body, so it didn't matter what race she was. But, the rest of the cast was diverse, save the fact that NONE of her team were Japanese as they were in the show, but their race swaps were okay.
