I remember the massive sensation Cats was when it was on Broadway, and a big part of it was the makeup design. I say that because I kept hearing from people how terrible the show itself actually was. So, the filmmakers, in their infinite wisdom, removed the aspect that everyone raved about and focussed on what people didn't like. I'd say that's become Hollywood's modus operandi.

@@fangal12 The poet T.S. Eliot wrote a bunch of poems about cats for his godchildren. Jellicle was a nonsense word he made up to tie them together. One of the reasons the original Cats musical got such attention when it premiered was that it was pretty off-brand for Eliot's usual style, and high school English students all over were like, "You mean we could have been reading this instead of grinding our way through 'The Wasteland'?" (I was one of those students. Even did my final year presentation on Eliot's poems and him 'breaking character,' so to speak.) When I was a kid, my family went to the movies and there were two Tim Allen movies (different ones) playing at the same time. One of them was the one where he pretended to be Amish to avoid the mob or something, I forget what the other one was. We bought tickets to one of them, but when the movie started playing, it was the wrong movie. My dad went out to make sure we were in the right theater and we were. So he complained. Instead of doing anything worth while, the manager just had everyone switch theaters, 15-20 minutes into the run time. Then they switched the posters and title card outside the theaters. No one got a refund or anything.
@darrenmacqueen9884 Жыл бұрын

The live show makes no sense at all but it’s still a lot of fun. Lloyd actually wanted it to make even less sense but Nolan and Lynn, his co directors felt that a thin thread of a story would hold it together better and so they added in that bit about redemption and such. They knew fully that the show us all about ts Elliot, cats, music and most importantly dance. Making sense isn’t part of it.

@@funkoxen it’s been made into two movies and both are awful, for different reasons. As a live show with a good professional cast it’s a lot of fun, even though it makes no sense at all. It’s more of a review than coherent story. And dance is the real star. Dance is always best seen live and cats is no different. One of the most popular numbers in the show is the railway cat. In this movie the dance is changed to a tap dance, and set on what looks like a real train track. It’s actually pretty scary and so the humor of the song and dance is lost. In the live show the cats make a locomotive out of stuff they find in the junk yard And the result is both funny and charming. This movie it’s like a drug induced fever dream . The ending bit DOES work better in the stage version, for a pretty simple reason: there's no fourth wall in the musical. Literally the first thing the cats do is shatter it; the entire opening number is addressed directly to the audience as well (which is why they open with a series of questions that hype up how great cats are; they are talking to humans). When it opened, the musical was in fact pretty groundbreaking; nothing had ever broken the fourth wall like that before, with the cats addressing their audience and going out into the crowd to dance. So when it closes with Old Deuteronomy directly addressing the audience and talking about what they've just witnessed, it's a bookend -- the cats opened by talking to the crowd about their ignorance regarding cats, and they close it by talking about how now they've been enlightened. The film takes out every other fourth wall break, wrapping them into the Victoria frame story, but inexplicably chooses to leave the very final one in. Which makes no goddamn sense, but then again, nothing else does either, so why should that song be any different?

This is definitely one of my favorite Pitch Meetings, and the one I usually show people first when introducing them to this series. Still haven’t seen the actual film, but kind of feel like I need to after your amazing description. I always feel like the best Pitch Meetings are the ones where the movie is either terrible (like Cats) or crazy/bizarre (like Tim Burton’s films). Sorry you’re suffering through these for our sakes, but I love what you come up with. Keep up the amazing work!

I always love observing how the pitch meetings have evolved. You can tell here, that there was a strong emphasis on getting the catchphrases out and to positively react to them. The setup for "SEBAI" was almost ham-handed in its eagerness to get to the catchphrase. These days, the setup is a lot smoother and the catchphrases (especially "X are tight!") aren't always treated positively, and I think that this growth makes today's pitch meetings that much more enjoyable.

Have you considered doing more pitch meetings for old movies? Like before the 2000's?

Wow this revisit was even better than the traditional pitch meeting. I love the anecdote about Cats confusion at the movies. And once again it was a horror film instead of their expected delight.

To be fair, the Mandarin Cats has some dark moments as well such as a girl cat dies plunging from a window and the villains abuse animals.

If you like making up your own mind about what you enjoy and not what the crowd tells you is okay, you might be surprised, I certainly was. I thought I was going to see a train wreck and instead found I really enjoyed the film. Sure, the costumes and CGI are a bit weird, but looking past that were great performances by truly talented people and a story about redemption that was moving. I like musicals though and understand their shorthand storytelling. If you already despise musicals and just want to join onto the "wow, that was stupid" bandwagon, then don't bother seeing it, I think it's already been shat on enough. It's truly unfortunate that they didn't choose to use cartoon animation instead, it probably would have been a hit. The film certainly has a much better structured story than the Broadway play.

A slight side track but within the realm; could you consider creating a tribute to the late and amazing Kevin Conroy? He passed away last November, and was the sole reason I got into acting. I have a voice acting background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's underrated as Batman (ditto Mark Hamill as Joker) and even non existent in the conversation. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in those new Resident Evil games :)

I feel like movie and comic book fans know who Kevin Conroy was, and they appreciate both Mark and his contributions to the Batman universe.

Cats is based on T.S. Eliot's poetry collection "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" This is the origin of "jellicle cats". This is in the closing credits as if anyone was interested enough in the movie to stay and watch the credits. After watching the original Cats pitch meeting I just went away with "Jellicle" stuck in my head but never looked it up. I was watching Logan's Run tonight and heard Peter Ustinov's character offer to give Logan and Jessica a "jellicle cat." I had to look it up since that was 1976 and predated Cats and am back here to share. Eliot's poem collection is from 1933.

Our family saw Cats, live stage production, in Philadelphia, in 1987. All I remember of it was being way up in the balcony. I was in my early 20s at the time. I did rent and watch 2019 "Cats" from my local library. I thought it was good, because the music is just so damned entertaining. So the music just carried the entire movie, made me forget most of the stupidities of decision-making about staging, omitting key moments, etc

7:35 I've seen the musical as a kid both on Broadway when visiting New York (I miss traveling all the time...) and on VHS. It is not any less confusing. Also the costumes are a million times better than most fursuits, mostly because they're skintight and use makeup and hairstyling instead of goofy looking masks. What's up with that anyway?
