In Pixar's newest short "Loop," all a boy and girl have to do is get in a canoe, paddle around a city lake, and get back. But there's a catch. He talks a lot, and she doesn't at all. He's neurotypical. She's on the autism spectrum.

I'm glad that they sctually had an autistic actress. I think the best way to portray characters with disabilities physical or mental with people who have those disabilities Edit: damn this got an argument started. To clarify I'm not saying an autistic person should play an autistic character because it would be easier for them to do it. I'm saying the reason roles like that should be exclusive to them is out of respect for them and others. It just gives them a chance to actually have representation and be a part of that representation. (Out of context) my school is doing lion King jr with the sped department and it's gonna be super cool Edit: sis i- thanks for the likes

This is a nice short.....but remember not all people with autism isnt like this. But it is of course amazing for disney to make a very emotional and powerful animation short for the people of the autism spectrum. Edit 1: This comment was never meant to be put into a negative way, I am not hating upon autism I'm just simply stating that all sides of autism are not normally shown. I also wasnt expecting this comment to be liked up to 2k, which really wasnt needed cause I dont deserve this many likes at all. But anyways for any people that see this in the future please dont be saying or think that I made this into something negative, because it really wasnt. Edit 2: everyone I just wanna thank you for the likes even when I never wanted any. Currently as of now we are all in a global pandemic, I just want to leave this message of hope by saying that even when we are down and loved ones may go remember that people across the world will understand your pain and will always comfort you. God bless you all🤗 Edit 3: Well holy crap this blew up even more. It's pointless for me to say this now but I myself have high functioning autism. I am being 100% truthful. This isnt for likes. It's just I dont really like to tell people cause I sometimes feel too different in a bad way

This is the case for a lot of adult autistic women. However, I’m pondering...Now it appears I’m perceived as “functional” enough to be judged “not autistic” by neurotypical people who watch these sorts of media and end up thinking autism is always visible and obvious. Im very happy to see representation, I’m just stating this because I’m not alone in this experience and I want to represent for all my fellow adult autistic homegirls who might feel similarly.

COMMUNICATION Speaking is not a mandated requirement, a straightjacket, the be-all and end-all of communication. WHOLE Renee has the full gamut of emotions and desires and thoughts and feelings - no holding back, no 'less than human'. STORIED Storytelling is vast, and Loop adds to that vastness in a unique way. EMPATHY Loop challenges viewers to mutualised empathy by switching from one perspective to another - too often autistic empathies are negated or said to not exist. INTEGRATED Loop integrates autistically-loved symbolry and themes, even in the infinity woven into the film title. NATURAL Loop sets an autistic naturally in nature, as naturally as all of that nature diversity crafted in the background, autistic stimming, nature stimming too. I hate all y'all acting like functioning labels are a thing that matters. Functioning labels are just a shorthand for allistics to state how much someone's autism affects them. Nonverbal does *NOT* mean low functioning either... Does this person struggle with simple tasks due to being autistic? Not really shown as there wasn't any skmple tasks that were asked of her beyond the 'simple' task of going on a boat with a strange kid who wouldn't shut up. Which is anything but simple to someone with high social anxiety like me even tho I can do so many other things without assistance. But cause I have sometimes debilitsting social anxiety; that makes me low functioning in those moments when I fail to do a simple task like shopping for many things or even just buying a single item.

They are acting like an autistic person of whatever age they are; because that is what they are. Like a child and shit like that is infantilizing as fuck and gives people the idea they need to take away the autonomy of autistic people like that.

I am autistic and I am a caregiver. In my field it isn't expected and many of my coworkers just say my diagnosis is fake or that I am faking for attention but I am not. I am high functioning in most ways, like I can tell how people feel, I just don't always recognize social cues/norms and subtle cues like moving away from someone or physically conveying more complex emotions. Other staff wonder why I do so well with dementia patients and other special needs ones but dismiss this being my reason. I am sorry, I just wanted to say it. Love the short and appreciate it

I wonder how we can say we got autism without saying we got autism, I got it down with my ADHD: "I got an chemical imbalance in my head that causes me to struggle with regulating my attention, as well as causing bad work memory, impulsiveness and restlessness. While I do take medicine for it, it only helps balancing out the imbalance, letting me better regulate my attention. It's not a cure."

I'll Teach You Dude, lemme clarify something before I say this: I’m white. not hiding that. first of all, Disney is literally known for having one of the most racist pasts there is as a company. Walt Disney was entirely racist and his films would depict that constantly. Disney is finally coming out of that shit and being diverse to the point where there’s people out there feeling happy beyond belief and ecstatic that there’s MOVIES and SHORTS that represent them. I have a cousin who’s mixed, on the spectrum, and she saw this short on Disney Plus. She does nothing but watch it when she can because she loves it and we love seeing her happy. Even if this was a joke, it was in very poor taste you dolt.

I don’t have Disney Plus but I would love to watch it as it shows a side of autism that isn’t commonly presented in entertainment (even with the character being a female is a big step up from the usual “basic genius male” we usually get.) balaia29 if I were in your shoes, I would tell him that there are many types of autism, and each autistic person if differently affected. Some are verbal, some are nonverbal. Some stim, some don’t. If he’s already talking, (you didn’t mention age, thus the “if,”) and if he is okay with and enjoys talking, then he’ll probably be fine. For instance, I’m autistic, and when I’m stressed out or feeling enough of a certain emotion, *then* I go non-verbal, but I can still communicate through shaking/nodding my head, and even little bits of sign language! But on an average day with little stressors, I blend right in when it comes to talking. There are also times where I may be a little stressed or bordering on extreme emotion, I go semi verbal. I can still talk, but communicate either with as little words as possible, or use something called echololia, meaning I can easily repeat other’s words. For example, I might not be able to say “I spilled water on the floor”, but if someone says “is something wrong?” I might be able to say “wrong, spill.” Confirming that something is wrong, and using one word to say what it is. If you show this to your son, I hope this helps!!

And to anyone out there who has it abit worser than me or just has it alot more severe than me hell I don't even know in my commentary videos of my KZbin channel if I sound very autistic or if you can tel I have it (please don't be rude or make fun of me if you disliked this video or mine just because I've mentioned I have autistics disability yes a learning disabilities because I find it hard to learn so hear me out here I am not spamming just is relating to the topic of autistim and my experienced so far today I saw this video in my recommendations and its just made my heart feel better after a day trying to explain to the teachers I have this issue in my head then they understand...... It annoyed me how they didn't leave me alone to clean my book my uncle gave me from excidental mistake that my food I made at colledge for people more advanced in the class not people with dowsyndrom etc can't spell cause my learning difficulties and tuff life not being able to speak at such a young age of until I was 9 I could alteast speak properly. Main thing is I look forward and atm I need time to unwind from other stress cause my head can't handle everying that's going on In life. And just hope someone understands my message here and has meaning towards this video as they later on speak why they made this I guess to spread awareness of autistim and how they communicate to one another. Iam a person with autisem that can understand my own mistakes of behaviour but that can get out of control to the point people take it the wrong way and have been diagnosed with mild autistic needs etc. Sorry for writing alot just iam very upset today the teachers didn't understand me and didn't even notice I have autisem and I find it's ok for them to alteast not know. Or even know. But if someone reply and comments something nasty or calls me "autistic" go ahead do it...... Release that random hatred in your dumb mind while mines already broken not on purpose at birth nor ever. Scientists don't even know the true answer why it causes these issues and these many problems. Keep in mind if your wondering my age. I just turned 20 this year and started to except my changes and to stick up for myself when needed if they get the wrong of the stick (not shouting at them don't worry I know my play and iam not a young girl who feeds off drama, I hate it as much as suicide I tryed in 2019) So being autistic is ok for anyone out there like me but think from what I've said coming from someone who has it herself. Just read over take your time or let someone else read it to you etc etc. It doesn't matter how you look or how you act. All what matters is to be yourself and stay yourself but make changes that are your flaws. (bad things you do that upset other) I have bad grades due to my learning difficulties but that won't stop me cause there is support out there, go to your local job center and they will diagnose your disability of all kinds. Good luck. Be yourself and never let anyone not even your own family or friends get you down and mostly strangers cause they don't know you have autisem. So if you have read and want to be mean go ahead sure there are nice people on the Internet who understands me and many others out there but treat us like muck all you want. I've dealt with enough online and inrl. Thanks for reading xx

Acting "normal" when the pressure of society is on me, then being a completely different person at home. Shut downs and being paralyzed, eloping(running with no control) when I'm misunderstood, scared, or if something really bad happens... It's Fucking bullshit. 22+ years of being called, and believing, that I was lazy or not trying hard enough, and I was just autistic. The only way I was truly myself was working with others who had disabilities and working with the elderly. I’m a CNA now and I want to own my own place for elderly and disabled people. Thank you so much for capturing what the struggle feels like .
