I love this character so much. "How do I know what they want me to say?" hit me on a personal level. He wants to be liked for who he actually is, and is content when he isn't as long as he's his own authentic self. I wish I could be more like him.
@StarlitSwamp2 жыл бұрын
I feel that too. I think one of the many reasons I love Moominvalley so much is because all the characters are allowed to be their true selves, and even when their friends don’t really understand their differences, they adapt and try to make sure that everyone feels included just as they are in the end. Even before Snork was (finally !) added to the show, I could empathize on such a deep level with Snufkin. As an autistic introvert who desperately needs a LOT of alone time to recharge and unwind, it can be hard to make loved ones see how much I really do care about them, when I can’t always show it in the ways that seem most meaningful to them. I used to want to please everybody so badly that I’d completely ignore my own needs, until one too many burnouts left me with permanent health problems. Snufkin represents everything I wish I’d had the courage to be when I was younger, and the fundamental part of myself I’ve been learning to accept. He compromises even more than I think I could, but never enough to harm his well-being or to change his nature, which is SO important. And I think there’s real beauty in the way Moomintroll, who is the complete opposite in terms of social needs, learns to meet him halfway, by finding contentment in what his friend CAN give freely. I’m delighted to also see Snork stay true to himself whether that makes him popular or not, and the others recognize that his more analytical approach to situations doesn’t mean he’s devoid of emotion.
@shibumi-tanuki2 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY!!! Gosh, not knowing what to say is a big problem for me. I've developed this kind of system where I observe what everyone's saying and then try to mirror it best I can so it's appropriate. Through years of feedback, I can kind of guess what it is I'm supposed to say, but most of the time I'm still clueless when it comes to what I should say/talk about when I'm forced to do small talk with people who don't share my interests. Snork is such a beautiful character and I positively feel a normal way about him /s Another thing I would've wanted is for him to develop a friendship with Snufkin, possibly instead of with Misabel, because I have a hc that Snufkin is also on the spectrum and I dunno, I feel they could've bonded over their shared appreciation for solo time and distaste for big social gatherings

I like how Snork is being introduced, based on these clips, and how accepting of his little eccentricities the others all gradually become, instead of the change having to come from him at the detriment of his personality and values. It’s always nice to see an autistic-coded character that doesn’t come across as a blatant caricature or basically just a soulless list of exaggerated traits… He actually seems like a friendly guy in his own way. Despite being autistic, I personally see more of myself in Snufkin (who might in fact be the fictional character I can identify with the most), but many of these situations with Snork are painfully relatable.

in the 90s anime, pretty much all the characters read as neurodiverse to me, being straight forward, expressing their emotions bluntly and sometimes rudely, not having conversations they werent interested in, having super strong and loyal attachments to people they felt safe around, so im glad snork is keeping that going super strongly and visibly. even in this scene, snork and moomintroll feel like the two opposite kinds of autism.
@Soulraven2735 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if that has to do with the fact that the Moomins were originally written in Swedish. Maybe, in attempting to translate the dialog, they went with the more literal translation which is why they're so direct. As someone who is autistic, IMO them doing literal translations would also be a way of representing neurodivergency, because why add all that unnecessary social conventions when you can be direct with speech. I mean, I understand why social standards when it comes to conversations exist and will participate in them, but the bluntness of the Moomins is nice.

The most unrealistic part is that at that party, snufkin wasn't strategically stood by an exit. Cuz he also doesn't like too much stimulation. Which makes me wonder why moomin struggles so much with snork. If he's learning to go at snufkins quiet, slow, non peoplely pace
@rabbitguts25182 жыл бұрын
As an autistic person I think it's very much to show how many neurotypical relate to autistic people. NT aren't usually put off much by those that are easy going, albeit non-sociable people but they are put off by those that are abrupt, brutally honest and struggle to show our emotions in a readable way like us ND peeps are(that doesn't mean we don't have them we just down show them as openly). So the fact moomin wasn't put off by snufkin but was by snork is actually pretty relatable.
@lunar_proxy2 жыл бұрын
well, there is a pretty obvious difference between the two, to me snufkin seems to be overstimulated by people and social situations specifically (akin to social anxiety/agoraphobia), while snork is sensitive to sensory input like sounds, lights, colors etc. which, when added up, causes overstim. snufkin is just a bit introverted and non-sociable, while snork, to an NT person, might even appear non-approachable due to being difficult to read, blunt, and "awkward/annoying to talk to" (due to not understanding jokes/sarcasm, being brutally honest, etc.) to be fair, snufkin also gives ND vibes for me, but in a different way than snork, so it still makes sense that moomin understands snufkin far better than snork (that, and he knows snufkin much better... maybe once he's had the time to get to know snork better, he'll do better too). but that's probably me projecting lmao

Also autistic but I agree. I think it comes down to - at a party you're expected to interact with people or even be the centre of attention while at a concert the attention is entirely on someone else and people tend to not interact with the people next to them much. At a party having to contend with multiple relationships/conversations in itself can be overwhelming not even counting all the lighting and stuff around to effect your senses. At a concert it's really just sound, sight and maybe lighting so it's a lot easier. At least thats how it works for me.

I’ve always felt very uncomfortable around balloons for as long as I remember (I was fine with foil ones though) for the same reasons and they really put me on edge as I’m always anticipating them popping. I used to always cover my ears at parties the whole time because of it until they all popped or were removed. Recently I’ve managed to overcome that to an extent, but I do find myself flinching when I see people handling them, especially little kids squeezing them. Even popping them by myself would be tense for me so good on Snork for that one.

it makes me so happy that snork, as an autistic character, gets annoyed and even angry with the others sometimes. ive seen too many autistic characters who’s range of emotions are portrayed as insultingly childish, sometimes literally only being “bubbly and happy” at all times, which is infuriating (we show emotion differently, but that doesnt mean we dont feel all the same emotions as everyone else!) and i LOVE how snork gets to stand up for himself! how he feels is validated! so many times autistic characters (heck, even autistic people in real life!) are expected to “learn” and change who they are to get along better with others, so i deeply appreciate moominvalley for spinning that idea on its head :)

Same here, there's some overlap with my own autism and his of course but seeing how asd and how his specifically was represented and percieved by other characters here in general was really lovely

My best friend growing up was autistic so I had to learn pretty quickly how to handle that. To see really good representation of neirodiversity in children's entertainment is beyond incredible.

I find it awesome that snork has autism. There’s not much representation of it in TV shows. I wonder if snork has Aspergers. My grandpa has Aspergers and at first, it was hard to talk to him about my problems but I know he always tried his best and he’s a great teacher about life in general. He’s helped a lot.
@raapyna8544 Жыл бұрын
Aspergers is a subset of autism nowadays. I think you are right.

What I enjoy the most in this show is that it has very different kinds of personalities sharing their perspectives and are still kind to each other. It’s like some sort of utopia ❤️

As a girl who has siblings who have autism it’s way too relatable and accurate with how Snork is portrayed here

I’ve never watched Moomin so when I saw this video I first thought, “There fandom goes again assigning neurodivergent labels on fictional characters,” but then I watched it and yeah. Snork has Autism.

Though I am also on the spectrum, my case is not very accurate to Snork’s, and that’s ok, everyone is a bit different. I understood the balloon scene, but I didn’t really feel myself in it. I would just leave and refuse to come back in. Plus, I tend to often sugarcoat my honesty instead of just bluntly saying what comes to mind, mainly because I don’t want to accidentally offend anyone, and I love how he tries to let people know that he doesn’t mean his honesty to be an insult later on. He may be a little stereotypical being an inventor and speaking in an overly formal manner, but he is definitely a good representation that is actually respectful and respected by the other characters. We don’t get enough of those. (I love the sunset scene from how it looks and sounds different from Snork’s POV, being more vibrant and louder than Moomin’s POV. It really shows that we see the same things, just a little differently.)

As someone with autism, the ballon speech hit very close to home since I've always hated (yet loved) balloons because I never knew when they'd pop. The sensory overload scene hit me in the feels because I've felt that before. Heck, today i froze up during piano class because everything felt loud and I felt very exhausted and I felt like people were going to pick on me for freezing up.

This is absolutely fantastic! They showed it so well, oh dear - I teared up haha, kids deserve this kind of representation and the fact that they explain it is amazing! Snork talking about how he sees the world was great! Man, now I love this show even more

the way snork maiden handled the party was very good, i think i do not have autism so i cannot say much on the matter, but she brought him because it was gonna be a quiet thing and that moomin had promised, and she checked if he was okay when he had a sensory overload, which was very nice of her

Honestly thanks to edits like this. I have been wandering whats up with me for years, now thanks to youtube i have a clue that i could either have adhd or autism and if it is I will be so happy literally. I now only need to get a change to be diagnosed, unfortunally my country is not the best when it comes to psychology help and ecspesially official diagnoses. Hopefully, I could travel to another place in future and get finally diagnosed there, when the war ends.

the way I somehow see myself as snork and I am autistic,even tho the being extremely smart bit feels a bit stereotypical,I still understand that smart autistic people exist and its alright,its just sometimes we are always being told to be smart just because of our autism,but overall his character is very well written!though I am not the very smart kind I often doubt myself
