Well, another pointless comparison. Pixel, like many other smartphones, bases all of it's camera experience on the "normal" or "auto" mode - that's where it generally tries to expose the whole picture (not just the subject, actually never JUST the subject, it sucks at it) as good as it can, and that's almost always exclusively using HDR (sometimes too aggressive). Sony's Auto mode is mainly for 2 things: subject photos - nothing comes close in exposing and focusing on the subject, as well as fast moving/sports photos with eye tracking and general subject tracking (car, bike, etc) with very fast shutter speeds and predictive auto. Sure, Xperia's Auto mode activates HDR but only on very tough, aggressively back-lit scenarios. If you want a correct comparison vs an Xperia, when shooting landscapes or stuff in the house in mixed lighting or with strong back-light - the only way to do it is to switch to Manual mode, leaving everything on "auto" (unless you really want to play around professionally) and switching HDR on - that's where you'll see the only smartphone camera around that does correct HDR photos, especially in strong back-lit scenery, with almost NO HDR "aura", which is aggressively prevalent at other manufacturers (particularly Samsung and Huawei, pixel is actually quite good). Also, besides that, there is no smartphone on the market that can yet match color accuracy. The camera stabilization though puzzles me. They need to work on it, it seems a Software issue - I'm saying that because I owned the previous flagship, the XZ3, and it was MILES better at stabilization.

Wow, thanks for your comment. I watched this video and was going to leave a comment from myself, but then I found yours. Exactly my thoughts! He also doesn't use any focus, the area where Xperia also excels. For me it looks like this reviewer has no clue about basic photography skills, or doing this on purpose to promote Pixel and bash Xperia.

What what? There are at least 6-7 shots where Xperia5 did a better photo with better dynamic range, thumbnail shot included. And the guy didnt even use HDR nor for photo nor for video on Xperia, so I wonder how that would turn out in compare.

On xperia no auto hdr ,if you turn it on manually, you will get much better results with bright areas.Anyway overall as device xperia for me!)

i use Xperia 1 and the result i get is far more superior but here pixel didn't had win on all the pics and indeed colors on Sony was always so natural

I would recommend that before each shot you record the area that will be captured by each smartphone to really know which one is closest to the reality of the image

The photos are comparable. The Pixel 4 is little better in some cases. But, the Xperia is probably a better overall phone(manual camera controls, bigger battery, wide angle camera & a physical fingerprint scanner), so I would go with the Xperia.

Pixel is natural.... No one can process human face details as good as pixel..... Sony is failed to capture details. Don't buy xperia buy SLR.

Sony Tells a better story thru pictures (point of interest, good emotional depth, contrast, like pro photos do). Unfortunately, as capable as the Pixel is, computational photography has "Flattened" everything. it doesnt have a "Hero" of the story aka subject. Everything, including the surrounding items became processed in a way that it gives too much attention to itself ( Like greens being too green, or everything constantly has this surreal HDR look when its not necessary.) u lose the authenticity of the scene by adding too much affects u cant subtract in camera and final file. Sony does the pro cam approach. No tricks.

I get what you're saying, but the Hero approach you are referencing only happens in pro cameras because the image processing they use doesn't allow for high dynamic range that computational photography does. Each new pro camera sensor gets closer and close to what the Pixel can do. Those pro devices aren't doing that the Pixel does because of a stylistic choice, they do it because of a limitation of the sensor and the one camera processing.

Problem for me is Sony has not released but maybe 1-2 updates since the Xperia 1 release. Seems they were more focused on working on the Xperia 1 mark II. I have begged along with many others for Sony to update the Xperia with something other than security patches, they have not listened. So glad I paid only $500 for mine and not $1000 when the after sale support is trash. I will not be getting the Xperia 1 mark II unless for $500 as well. Since this video Google has made multiple updates to it's camera and audio software. For value at $650 currently at Best buy it's almost a steal.

Could you try doing a few shots with the Sony on Manual mode with HDR on to see the difference compared to the Pixel? Seems like this is what all the Sony boys are saying and wanted to see it for myself before I consider buying it?

Technically the Google Pixel does better in low light, but in the worst case scenario, it comes at the cost of visual fidelity. Sure it's not as dark, but there are artifacts and compression all over the image, and to me it looks measurably worse.

Eduardo Diaz you don’t have to, you can use manual mode. I even use Lightroom mobile on my older iPhone as the stock camera cannot always get the look right, though it’s fairly good.

Thanks for the thorough comparison. Looks like the Xperia has some difficulties with its white balance in artificial light situations. Slightly too warm on many shots, especially skin tones look unnatural. Also puts a bit too much contrast on some of the shots, which blows the highlights and looses details in the shadows. Good job Google! Both overall look like good cameras for a phone though.

Audio recording is superior on Sony Xperia 5, still pictures looking more natural also on Sony mobile. Pixel is not bad, far from it. But, IMO, Google phone pics and video look over processed to me.

Sony / Pixel "Enough" light: great colour / colour OK, but more detail bright: low dynamic range/ HDR a little bit dark: realistic colour but bad detail / not realistic colour, too bright, very responsive (shutter speed), quite detailed Dark: not usable / bad colour, very usable. Look like early morning with night mode front camera: great/ not usable at night

Pixel sense the scene very well But images from sony are sharper than pixel however sony is struggling in video department in your video which is not good because sony is well known for its eye auto focus. So I don't know its your fault in the video or fault from sony.
