Been a full time professional photographer for close to 15 years, and something that I've noticed about most photographers/designers is that they forget that the larger a physical print is, the further away the viewer is going to be. Sure, if you zoom way in to 100% the effect probably doesn't look great. But unless you're doing full spreads in art books and magazines, clients literally don't notice 90%+ of the work we do to prep an image for print. For stuff like weddings, family pictures, and seniors, i doubt most clients could tell the difference between this effect and say a 1.4 lens fully open ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@misterwhyte
@misterwhyte 8 ай бұрын
I agree most people probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, especially when looking at the overall picture, but I still think enough people could tell something's off even if they can't tell you why. For that reason I still think all this work is necessary and this feature won't replace a really nice lens any time soon.

Good analysis as always, and good solutions to work around the bad masking. I've had my own play with this feature and found it to be very unreliable as of now. The Focal Range does not always correctly analyse an image and there is no way to tell it which objects belong to which depth. We'd need to be able to change the heat image like a normal map for it to be accurate. As of now, this for me is an improved tilt-shift blur.

Well obviously not, but not everyone has access to those lenses, and sometimes, even if you own them, you might not have them on your camera for whatever reason. Or perhaps you messed up the settings and accidentally shot at F7. Who knows? It's imperfect for sure, but it's quite cool, and it's only going to get better.

I lost interest in photography when it went digital, but I am getting interested again. Your comment suggests that you can bypass the automatic features of your camera and do manual settings. That is the one thing that frustrates me most about my digital camera. Anything you can tell me about that will help me decide on a better camera.

@@juliensorel5535 Any good DSLR or mirrorless will have a very good manual mode that pretty much works like a film camera. Modern digital viewfinders are also pretty amazing -- you can hardly tell it's digital. The dynamic range of modern sensors has also improved a great deal. Also autofocus -- which you might or might not want -- is something to behold now. Tracking a subjects eye while they're moving quickly.

All well explained and demonstrated as usual Unmesh. You are the bar when in comes to teaching cutting-edge PS skills. But to the (mildly) professional eye it really falls short. In many aspects I must say. I really hope this is not what those learning the craft and art of photography come to expect and deliver to clients. It simply doesn't look real at nearly any resolution. That aside, I could literally afford to buy a 1.4 lens in the time it would take me to process 2 to 3 portrait sessions with the precision you demonstrate here. And yet with PS the results would still look ... well ... fake.

I have been using this effect in LR for a few trips, I did not bring f1.4 lens, and used only f4-6.3 lens. I tested many portrait conditions to test out what kind of shots that the Ai can do smooth lens blur effect. Then now, for me, there is no need to carry f1.4 lenses anymore for normal light situations. This effect is really a game changer for me, the Ai is much much smarter than in the pass!

Yeah, we have been doing it manually since smartphone cameras hit the mainstream. I always drew manually a mask to use as reference for the traditional lens blur effect. What we really needed is for adobe to just give us the tool that creates detects the depthmap. And then we could have taken that and pulled it into lens blur filter.

Interesting perspective. If that were the case why not revert back to original TVA blueprints and plans as opposed to trying outfit the current tva plans on the existing model to account for multiple timeliness that still funnel and power the tva. 99% of people viewing images on screens or mobile phones wont know. Its only those of us who are photographers and boffins who will be looking for it. Also its not meant to replace lenses, its simply another filter that might be of assistance. I work as an advertising photographer and have already used this for a job I did this week. I was photographing bedroom linen for a company and we had a room set with my lighting set up to work for a number of shots, all needing to look the same way to fit a range that needed to look similar. At the last minute the client wanted detail images with short depth of field images, details of the pillow with the duvet fading out of focus. I would have had to change all my light power settings etc to do this which would have been a pain given the time constraints of the job. This filter enabled me to be able to give them the effect they wanted without having to change lighting power to and fro. The detail photos are for packaging and appear only about 5cm by 7cm on the packaging, printed on light gloss card. Nobody will know.

I so rarely add comments. Firstly I''m not a professional photographer nor a professional editor and do this mostly as a hobby for myself and to throw some work up on Insta for fun. As far as the Lens Blur feature, I'm feeling it's a little gimmicky...almost like Adobe is reaching low. There really isn't anything with Lens Blur that I haven't been able to replicate with the Tilt Shift filter for images that are shot straight on, and for those shot like the example at 11:00 in the video a combination of Tilt Shift and Field Blur filters. MOST IMPORTANTLY, at least for me, was the technique of separating the subject and background into separate layers, something I've been doing for a long time (thanks for that technique Unmesh!). If you are looking for a quick time saving thing that isn't going to count to you...maybe this is a good filter. But good technique and patience is going to you further than "click an go", and this filter feels a little "click and go" gimmicky to me. BTW...a final technique point. Technique is important to "in camera" work, and I think is critical. I know skilled editors (and sometimes even guys like me) can replicate an 85mm f/1.2 accurately, but really, isn't it better to do it right in camera for the best and most natural results? Unmesh...big fan here...thanks!
