You have already seen lagaan this one is equally lengthy. Waheeda Rehman is my favourite also she is one of the few who have aged so gracefully and did character roles. And just so you know she has filmography that today’s actors can only aspire. Because there are somethings that you just can’t remake. Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke phool, Guide are in that category.

Waheeda was better than many of her contemporaries and successors. However they didn't make proper use of her beginning from the late 70s. She was wasted in typical poor suffering mother roles like in films like Trishul.

In my opinion this is one of the greatest hindi movie ever made. The song not only depicts the 5 different moods (Normal day, Diwali, Early morning, Holi and mid night) but also the upward rise of a Dancer in her career. There is a lot more going on in the composition: The song traverses two very popular festivals - Diwali and Holi in the 1st and 3rd paragraphs, and day and night in the 2nd and 4th respectively. if you notice closely, the 1st Antara has the lead dancer dressed up in a very "Marathi" get up, the second para has her dressed in a white red bordered saree often used to represent the "Bengali" appearance, the third para has her dressed in a very north-central Indian get up while the fourth paragraph draws inspiration from the costumes of southern Indian classical / semi-classical dancer. The composition adroitly represents the four regions of India. The music is a blend of UP / Bengali folk mixed in cleverly with classical nuances. the song also traverses the storyline, if anyone has read the R.K. Narayan classic "The Guide" or watched this gem of a film, one would be astonished by the aptitude of artistic and captivating storytelling. I am not sure if the creators of the song used such clinical reasoning to picturise it or if it came naturally to them owing to their immersive experience of Indian culture and an uninhibited appreciation of the sheer diversity of India.

His original story was based in Malgudi ,in a very South Indian ambience and Nalini the female protagonist ,was a Bharatanatyam dancer . Poor R.K.
