10:10 I went to see the nutcracker last Friday (the Theatro Municipal production in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil) and I started crying during the snow scene because of how beautiful it was. I can't even imagine what it's like actually dancing it! They used dry ice so when the curtains opened a lot of the fog came pouring out into the orchestra and the audience! Idk if it got to me or if it was just that immersive but I could actually feel the cold, it was wonderful

The first (and possible only time) I saw the Nutcracker live was my twelfth birthday present. This was thirty five years ago, and performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. The storyline was that it was Maria's (I think this is what they named the main character) twelfth birthday, and besides the Nutcracker doll, she was gifted with ballet shoes, because she wanted to dance. I'm sure there was more to this change of story, but that is what I can remember. I would have been happy with the traditional storyline, but having it be a birthday storyline for my birthday was very special.

Balanchines Nutcracker is my favorite for a lot of reasons, I like it's whimsy and cheer, Maria Tallchief is a hero, I like they actually use children for children, the design and costumes are so delicious, they keep Mother Ginger, and its Snowflakes and Flowers are by far the loveliest of any production

Merry Christmas, Ladies! Two memorable live Nutcracker performances: Montana Ballet Company's, December 1988. I got to photograph the Dress Rehearsal for that one. Hey guys, merry Christmas! Nurtcracker is my all-time favorite ballet because it's what introduced me to ballet as a whole (via the Barbie movie) and I've been in love with it ever since, so I'm really happy to listen to you guys talk about it for a bit. Nutcracker's music is, much like you guys, such a comfort blanket to me that I listen to it whenever I need cheering up (no joke I broke my ankle around this time last year and asked the doctors to put it on before they put me to sleep for the operation). Anyway thanks for hosting this lovely little podcast episode 🥰

So in middle school, I transferred ballet schools and the new school was just opening as a ballet school the year I joined. This meant we literally did not have the number of students to do a full length production of Nutcracker (my teacher didn't want really little kids having multiple costume changes), so for the first 2 years, we just did act 2 divertissments. I think only being able to do act 2 made my teacher feel kinda bad, like she wasn't able to give us students the full Nutcracker experience, so in year 3 my teacher said "we're doing a mostly full length Nutcracker, and I'll figure out how to make it happen somehow." What ended up happening was my teacher ended up changing the story from Clara getting a nutcracker doll & going on an adventure to Clara getting a book of fairytales and the stories come to life during the night. We did have to cut the battle scene, but I think we made up for it by making the snow scene evil (based on Hans Christian Anderson's Snow Queen). In act 2, we changed the country food/drink divertissements to fairytale character divertissements (Cinderella, Peter Pan & Tinker Bell, Bo Peep, Little Red Riding Hood, etc). Since I grew up with my ballet teacher's creative decisions, I feel like Nutcracker to me doesn't have to always strictly stick to the tried and true story. Some of my best memories associated with Nutcracker season are of me and my friends growing closer each year (also Nutcracker season firmly starts in October for me).

We just ended our Nutcracker last week with all sold out performances. The Snow scene is my favorite scene as well, I feel like it's more magical than the land of the sweets. My first time doing Snow Queen I literally cried after the curtains came down because I was so lost in the music and the scene. What makes it even more special is that we have a children's choir that comes and sing during Snow.

16:17 I've just recently started a Christmas tradition of my own. I'm a stage actor in the Milwaukee area, and earlier this month, I did a production of "A Christmas Carol" (adapted from the novel of the same name by Charles Dickens) with Pink Umbrella Theater Company, which is a local theater company that I do a lot of work with. It was a one-actor show based on staged readings that Dickens used to perform in the 1850s/1860s, and we only did two performances, but it was highly anticipated and a massive success. They both sold out in advance, and I'm sure we will do it again next year. So if you're ever in Milwaukee in December 2025, I hope you come and see it.

I saw my first Nutcracker this year after reading A Very Young Dancer more times than I can count. (Jordan, I loved what you said about Balanchine because that was all about the Balanchine version!) It was just a local version at our college, but I enjoyed the performance very much except for one thing: THEY KILLED THE NUTCRACKER!!! What the Sam Hill was that about? The Mouse King stabbed him, he fell, Clara collapsed to her knees sobbing, and then we never saw him again. Instead she went to the Land Of Sweets with Drosselmeyer. (Clara also ends up killing the Mouse King instead of just throwing her slipper, which I'm sure the ballerina appreciated!)

Yesterday was the first time I ever went to a performance of dancers. They included excerpts from Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and of course, The Nutcracker. My one pet peeve was the fact that the musicians played the Sugar Plum Fairy twice, one with the dancer, one without. As a pianist who hears the music to the Nutcracker on a daily basis, it gets rather tiring to hear the SAME PIECE, played THREE TIMES A DAY, for TWO MONTHS STRAIGHT. At this rate, I might lose my mind.

2:50 You talk about when is the nutcracker season, you talked about nutcracker season starting in October. However, I don’t agree with you. In October how would someone be getting ready for Christmas if it is not even Halloween? At that time (25 Oct 2024) I watched a show by HK ballet about 45th anniversary ballet gala, which includes Tchaikovsky pas de deux, grand pas classique, don quixote wedding pas de deux and pas d’esclave from le Corsaire. Those 4 are my most played music pieces from 24 October to 5 November if I remember correctly. Even in mid November I still have that kitri act 3 variation on my head. And until early December I started preparing to play waltz of the flowers as part of our talent fiesta in our school, and the performance date is on 20 December. What is your most played piece in October, November and December respectively? I also remember I loved the nutcracker so much last year that I was still watching the nutcracker on my iPad until April 2024
