I travel a lot along this route (I'm based in prague). You found yourself on an older train where 1st class apparently exists but actually doesn't and it's very annoying when the train is full or the weather is hot (this has happened to me a few times). If you choose the route that doesn't go via Vienna and departs from Nyugatti you should have better luck and you should be able to select a single seat that you wanted on the website when doing the reservation. It's very good value for money and if you get bored just head to the bar and chat to some random people getting drunk (we're mostly friendly ;-). Really enjoy your videos!

The advantage of Regiojet definitely is that, despite not having a bistro/restaurant car (they had a few, but had to pull them out of service for structural safety reasons... Not sure what the state is now), they have pretty good at seat catering at damn good prices. I used to eat their sushi all the time.

Kelenföld is an absolute paradise for trainspotters, I don't think there is any station in Europe or even the world that sees that many different operators, private freights, special locomotives, etc. I can absolutely recommend staying there for a longer period of time! The old station building is now completely obsolete, you can disregard that. There are several underground concourses (connecting to the metro as well) and modern platforms. Also in the vicinity: you can get a bus uphill to one terminal station of the children's railway.

That business class coach looks like a refurbished DB loco hauled intercity coach, part compartment seating part open seating. They were very common on DB intercity trains in the early 90’s.

It looks identical to the current InterCity/EuroCity coaches that ÖBB use, right down to the seats. RegioJet probably bought some carriages off of them.

Great, I recall travelling between Budapest and Vienna about 30 years ago, it was mid winter and show on the ground, the 1st class carriage was baking hot, and a compartment coach too. Don't remember much else except that there were lots of touts at Kaleti station wanting to exchange money. Oh, and queueing in the snow for a taxi! Much prefer trains to using a bus ....

Taken this train myself from Vienna to Budapest (and got off at Kelenfold as it was nearer to where I was staying in Budapest than the main station). Like Scott, the upgrade was a no-brainer and was pleasantly surprised on how cheap the food was on board.

Thats the old Kelenfold station you have showed us. no one really using it tbh. Kelenfold is pretty handy to get to with m4 metro or tram. newly built Etele Plaza / shopping centre / is beside it if you want to kill some time. Starbucks is the store on the right upon entering the plaza. Deli used to be nice about 30 yrs. gateway to the southern part of the country hence the name deli./ southern / good luck with your journey.

Thanks for a quite interesting video. On one point I would disagree with you, . As other commentators have pointed out, Kelenfold is not that bad a station. And (more importantly) it is very busy because (as other commentators have also pointed out) it has excellent Metro, tram and bus connections. In particular metro line M4 and the very busy tram route number 1 terminate at Kelenfold.

Budapest-Kelenföld is not a dump. The building is a bit unloved but it's mostly an interchange with the bus and metro systems. Regiojet: Low fares, high staff levels, bargain priced catering, what's not to love. I don't understand how they make any money running their trains though.
@SimonPilkington-g3i3 ай бұрын
I think you have this wrong Scott in as much as Kelenföld is a very useful station indeed. It is very well connected by Metro to Central Budapest and if there needs to be engineering work coming out of either Deli or Keleti stations, a train will start at Kelenföld as a result and the Metro transit is a really easy one. Also worth knowing is that a Budapest transport 24 hour pass or 48/72 hour BKK is valid on trains as far s Kelenföld. Guards will only usually check tickets after Kelenföld. Convenient station, well connected by Metro and has a few places to get food and drink.

Oh nice!! Welcome to Prague, Scott!! :) About a month ago I was thinking of going to Budapest from Prague. And on the Czech Railway website, I saw a connection where the first class was cheaper than the second.. go figure The magazine is "žlutý" which means "yellow".. but I like your pronunciation better :D :D :D And the train at the end of the video is class 830 or former M 262 from the 1950s. The KŽC company bought it a while ago, restored it and runs it on the Prague Semmering route on the weekends :) the route has some cool views too. I took a ride on it this summer and actually did think "I wonder what Scott would say", at least I was 8 years old again that day.. lol If you do take it some day, you'll want to sit on the right-hand side when going out of the main train station towards Zličín ;) And a regular Prague public transport ticket will be fine on the train as well. Let me know if you'll need a travel buddy 😁

Just as bad as compartments are those trains with open-plan coaches but then all the seats face each other, like Switzerland or Hungary or wherever treats you to. I had to spend hours recently looking at some grumpy looking woman who had to telephone all her friends it appeared. Though not sure it was worse than the recent 6-hour journey in a compartment with people who had brought their poor cat who seemed nervous and appeared to be suffering from flatulence. As if that wasn't bad enough, it was kept in a massive carrier that meant hopping over it to get to the toilet.

As for the Deli and Kelenföld difference, I just wrote an email to them the first time and they answered in a couple of hours saying it’s absolutely fine getting on at Deli. I recommend you write them an email next time u have doubts. :)
