If you both accept, i'll sign up to both your patreon accounts....Cheers - Alex.

I never had any problems with the passengers the times I did Eurolines or Flixbus. Only that the first time I went from NL to Copenhagen with Eurolines it took only 8.5 hours from 12 midnight till 8:30. Slept fine against the window. Nowadays that journey with Flixbus takes 10 hours up to 15 hours ! (with more trips though ..). And one time after getting stuck in Hamburg rush hour, the Eurolines driver thought that he should make up , by driving >110 kmh ... Scary ! I was thrown all over my seat, overhauling many private vehicles ...

The appalling legroom on the Edinburgh to London bus, reminds me that the gold standard for bus travel was set many decades ago by Greyhound in the US. Even the 1970/80s MCI MC9 featured 3 axle air suspension, a rear mounted diesel engine, air conditioning, reclining seats with armrests, footrests, an onboard loo and massive knee room (some very long distance only seated 43 passengers). Journeys frequently include a 15-20 minute rest stop in every 6 to 8 hour travel sequence, with up to an hour in major cities for thorough cleaning, and where bus stations had good passenger facilities (food and restrooms). My longest trip was from Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone to the NY Port Authority Terminal on 42nd St, via Minneapolis and Chicago. Something like a 60 hour bus ride for 2300 miles, comfortable travel with none of the Flix bus stresses. Ironically, since 2021, Flix’s parent German company has owned Greyhound US.

In 1977 as young man with my girlfriend, we did a trip to Malgrat de Mar in Spain: Bus from Manchester to London, train from Londo to Dover, Dover to France then a coach down to the border; the coach didn't have a toilet or refreshments. Once at the border we had to change to a Spanish bus to Margrat de Mar. It was an Experience. Later in the 90s I did the same trip, though from Rochdale, UK to Margrat de Mar Spain on 1 coach, TV, toilet and hostess. no problems

@anniej1616 I don't think so. Back in the day the Aristocracy would do a Grand Tour of Europe, I suppose the landed gentry too. By 1914 I suppose you might do this in the newly fangled motor car. But you would want a driver mechanic to do this and my Grandfather was both so I suppose he took this job on to get the Laird of Glenmoriston in a Renault, south. I surmise that the intention was to get to Rome, I think intimations of impending war made them turn back.

I’ve done a return trip on FlixBus between London and Augsburg with a stopover at Brussels Nord and it’s not the coach itself that is tiring but fellow passengers. It’s like all good manners stay at home. And I’m not talking just about coughing at you but for example setting up a bedding on the floor next to your feet, so you practically can’t move for few hours (won’t be even mentioning what type of travellers decided to do that). Trains, though more expensive, seem like a safer alternative nowadays.

I've had a couple of days ago travel inside Germany, around 500 kilometres and have years ago decided to avoid coaches for the same reasons as you. This time, I went for the Deutschlandticket instead and took local trains and have to say, that for the same reasons, I wouldn't do it again and opt for an ICE instead. Years ago, I did this a lot and it was also fun and still cheap. The Deutschlandticket wasn't a thing but 44 Euro could get you a countrywide ticket for one day in local trains. You usually had more leg room, you had your luggage right next to you and the journey was usually a lot of 'watching the world go by', watching movies and hearing music. This time, I had soooo many people with bad manners and as a 'reward' I now have a cold, back pain and knee pain. Never again!

What I was thinking, too. In general, a very unhealthy lifestyle. Travel is not meant to be a punishing endurance test, imo.
@wookie2222
@wookie2222 Ай бұрын
A couple of years ago, when me and my girlfriend lived in different cities far apart, I had to travel to her by bus or train each second weekend and it always were trips that were around eight to ten, sometimes even more hours. I still remember, how constipation was a thing in a way that I tried to get some food in order to constipate myself for long enough. Why? Well, I had several cases of bus or train toilets being closed or broken. When you sit in a bus and the next stop will be in one or two hours, you don't want a sudden code brown comming through. A broken train toilet is not as bad - you can still get of the train at the next stop and try to find a place to do your business there, but then you have to take the next train, which could come in one or two hours. My way of 'declogging' myself usually included lots of water, some movement and things with lots of fibre to get things going again. And yes, this felt always like a punishing endurance test to me, too - but it's the fault of the people who design the interior of busses and trains and don't take the physical needs of the customers into account but only regulations and money.

That Edinburgh to London coach looks like one of the Yutong coaches, I've heard how poor the interior space is , and they look considerably shorter outside compared to other coaches( tri axles excluded). The cost of these coaches are cheaper ( they are Chinese) compared to European makes but obviously the cheaper price reflects in poorer passenger comfort. Similar here, but in the 90s, not back on a bus since then. I despise travelling by bus so much, if there would only be the slightest chance of a train travelling there, I would always take the train (or not going at all).

Agree, did a coach holiday in the early 80s to Switzerland from East Midlands, over 2 and 1/2 days in total just to get there. London Vic. coach station was filthy(the garage workshop where I worked back then was cleaner), it seems like bus/coach stations haven't progressed like for example airports-grim especially eerie at night judging by Scott's video! On our second day from Paris to Swiss border it was a mind numbing journey vast acres of nothing for hundreds of miles and obviously no mobiles laptops etc to give you some relief. I felt his pain after watching the video--felt exhausted just watching it!!!

Paris Bercy looks rough, but my experience of Milan is that it's not short of shady characters either. Better to do it the other way round and treat yourself to the beauty and civility of Scotland at the end of your journey. Great video as always.

The lack of legroom on Flixbus coaches operating the London to Glasgow and Edinburgh routes seems to be a recurring complaint. It doesn't seem to be such a problem on their other routes. Food for thought?
@iainjones5002
@iainjones5002 Ай бұрын
Flixbus operates different routes, via Partner Operators who supply the vehicles and drivers. Thus, whilst the vehicle may be in Flixbus Livery, the type and specification of vehicle being used may be different from those on other routes.
