PART 11: Ulaan Baatar to Beijing by train.
This was one of the most amazing train journeys I have ever done. Firstly, the landscape became drier and drier as we passed through the eastern portion of the Gobi desert. We then had the excitement of a night time border crossing and the following morning, once in China, our train followed the narrow Yongding River gorge for miles. This was by far the most scenic leg of the journey so far.

So sorry you missed the excitement of the bogie change at the border. I did the trip 17 years ago Moscow - Irkutsk - Ulaanbaatar - Beijing and we had to stay on the train. Each carriage is shunted into a shed and then picked up by crane and placed on the new bogie. It was difficult to stay on the bench never mind sleep. Lots of banging and clanging for 3 hours in the middle of the night. I am really enjoying this series, reliving many of the trips I have made in this part of the world.

I lived in Beijing for 5 years in Tongzhou District but now in Ningbo, China is so safe, hope you come back soon and please try Chinese Airlines, they are great! Would love to meet up with you, as an driver old guide based in London but went everywhere in the UK and Ireland we would have many ideas for your future adventures
