Holy minerbots, this tutorial is good! Another good reason to avoid building a large canteen connected to a large dorm is the corridor width. Two large structures have a large corridor, and the width of that costs you the space for the last bunk in the dorm. Connect it to a medium oxygen producer and you have just enough space for 9 bunks, and no air problems.

@rhyzvanic36609 жыл бұрын
Huh, interesting. I go with Large O2, Medium Storage, Medium Processing, Medium Solar panel and Medium BioDome. I usually build 2 airlocks, one for the landing pad, and one for the industrial mining area, so traffick between trading and processing is split. That and I like it aesthetically. But as with building larger structures, I *REALLY* push the starting resources to the limits before I begin production. But it's nice seeing how other people do it!
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+Vlad1m4ra Thanks for sharing. There's plenty of viable start types. This video just shares the one I like. I arrived at it by putting all the resource costs into a spreadsheet and trying to get a setup that got me as far as possible with the starting resources. A second airlock is a great idea and usually goes in as early as I can spare it. :)

This tutorial is good. It helped me understand why my dorms were running out of oxygen when attached to a canteen. Makes sense when I think about it. Some advice I would like to add to this for beginners... when you start bringing visitors into the base or making large trades, it is advised to make a specific choke point for this to prevent unnecessary deaths and wasted time. Pick an area of the map that has a bit of space but will be ok to dead end in. Build a Large Command Center, then build a Oxygen generator on the other side of it. Attach 3 air locks to the Oxygen generator. Then in a fan shape outwards from that you can add landing pads and starports till your hearts content. Fill the command Center with as many Security consoles you can and make sure you have at least 6 guards in there at all times. This way the intruders will be FORCED to walk through the security center and you will not need to issue a red alert. Issuing red alerts are BAD! They are bad because non armed and armored colonists will go and attack the intruders and die unnecessarily. Building this choke point will prevent your colonists from going anywhere near this side of the base unless you are making a trade (which the three airlocks will make it very easy to complete) Make sure you have a med bay near this security checkpoint so that injured guards don't have far to go to get to a bed. Take note that an injured colonist will DIE quicker if they have to walk then when they are lying down. (Same for irradiated colonists too!)

+Neferdias that's funny cause i always had my dorm connected to my canteen and i never had any problems with oxygen between them unless i ran out of oxygen for the whole station, but after watching this i do agree it is better to keep them seperate
@Neferdias9 жыл бұрын
+FuryousD It was more of a sporadic issue that would only happen for a few minutes during the end of the night cycle... the messages are anoying though. it seems that it happens to any dead end buildings in high traffic areas where the o2 generators are spread out to much. Ive had my dead ended labs and command centers complain as well.
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+Neferdias Great tip on the command center funneling of intruders. It does work very well. I tend to issue red alerts early game when I have less armed guards so the intruders will get dogpiled, but it's not necessary with properly command center placement, you are right. Thank you for your well thought out tips.

this is a pretty good tutorial. After beating this game 6 ways to Sunday with all achievements, decided to find the optimal way to beat all of the challenges 6 ways to Sunday. Currently at 41 days for the dark moon, 9 days for the Atlantis, the frozen planet and the metal mine one but still trying to figure out how to beat them faster. Yeah, I have too much free time to do this these days. So I do a couple of things differently. Here is what I normally do even on the dark moon challenge: ships lands and colonists/robots walk out. recycle the ship immediately. this makes access faster and easier. I typically build a box around the pile of resources. For example, On dark moon, it makes sense to build through the pile of resources. The airlock is on the left, the oxygen generator is on the right and the connector is right through the pile. Power, etc goes up along the mountain base. Sorry if you've never seen the dark moon challenge as this would be meaningless. Build the largest solar cell possible. Build the largest power collector possible. On the dark moon, don't do this until the engineer moves towards the solar collector to build it. build a windmill if possible. Doesn't apply in a couple of cases. Build an air lock. On the dark moon, don't do this until the engineer starts to move towards the power collector to build it build the oxygen generator Build the landing pad. On dark moon, if this is done before day 0 hour 20, 1 or more resources will join to help. Otherwise they join in the next morning. (the order of the next four has something to do with what happens on the dark moon. The order is not real important otherwise) Build a mine. (on the metal mine challenge, This is the first thing done after recycling the ship) build a canteen build a dorm Build the water extractor. Build the bio dome (size 5 is fine) with 6 veggie pads (3 vegs/3 starches) pads and a medical pad. This is just to start Build the processing plant once there are resources to process Grow from there. Add the factory, lab, first aid, robot facility, etc, as required. On dark moon, it is very annoying because more solar power, power storage and water is required. It takes 6 or 7 days to sort out. Then more oxygen and food, really annoying. Some things I prefer: - Never use guns or guards to deal with intruders. instead, build a box of structures around the landing pad with an air lock and keep the airlock turned off until the new colonists are verified. This is a little annoying because the new colonists need to be verified but the other benefits are overwhelming. Happy visitors are the intruders. All visitors in the dark moon challenge are intruders - Rarely is a security center needed unless it is required to beat the challenge. The frozen planet challenge requires it for the radio posts.. Forget what else does. There might be an achievement or two that requires it. - malnutrition can be avoided by including all veggie and starch pads. Build one of everything and you'll never see the malnutrition alert. - rarely do I change the priority or colonists ratios. This is just a personal preference or I am lazy. The only time worth doing it is on the dark moon challenge. Usually to prefer workers overs medics in the initial stages then revert to the defaults. . - Storage is not required if resources are managed closely. For example. on the dark moon, it makes a lot of sense just to build what is absolutely required so plan ahead.. Every 20 colonists a new oxygen generator is required, every 30 colonists needs a new bio dome of size 5, etc. In The Atlantis challenge, the pre-existing storage building and attached airlock should be recycled.

Great tutorial! Also, awesome commenters. I'm rethinking a lot of what I do with my build and realizing that much of it was garbage Have a lot of new things to try. I usually have a large med bay near the landing pad for guards and friendly visitors. There's a separate medic-only lab next door to hopefully get the medics to their patients faster. Also, mining seems to bring a lot of injuries so I try to build mines close by (the little buggers must have great Workers Comp - can't get rid of them). In the beginning when resources are limited, I place an empty, disabled control center in an odd space so I can hit the panic button. This gets replaced later on when I'm ready to add consoles, guards and the telescope/radio/laser combo. I used to disable the mines to flush them out then close the airlocks to lock them in but man, that got old real fast. There's always the npc who escapes and decides to take a long journey.

+IsthmusPrime Sickbay near landing pad for guards and visitors is an excellent tip. Miners do reliably generate broken bones, which is such a good reason to get drill bots as soon as possible. Agreed ... and these shouldn't be too far away from a Storage Area where they can get Medicinal Plants and Bioplastics (used to create Medical Supplies). I like to have my Storage Area centralized with direct connections to the Canteen, Bio-Dome and Processing Plant ... the Storage Area is usually the hub of my base as these buildings use the Storage Area in one way or another regularly and need direct access for a better efficiency (short distance) between structures.

On the lab, I prefer to mix production and have at least 2 labs just in case a meteorite damages one for a few reasons, the people inside tend to die and it takes a while to recover. That way a hit won't wipe out most of my medics, or biologist like it would if I didn't mix production. In some domes you cannot mix production, so whoever is the primary technician for that dome is doomed. It is like the game is targeting all of your biologist since they are the only food producers and everyone else is going to starve to death unless you can replace the specialist fast enough. Normally replacements aren't possible because your base has fallen out of favor, showing yellow, or red, so no one will come in. When that happens the game is over and you might as well do a restart from your last saved game, of if needed delete the last saved game and then restart, or use the continue option. That is a much better option than starting over from when the colony ship lands.

spares are ONLY used on power generation. nothing else also, meat is meat. it doesnt do a thing to vary the types. same with the veggies. tomatoes, onions, wheat and meat make all 3 advanced meals. salad, pasta and burger. doesnt matter that the game lists 20 or so salad combinations. as far as the game is concerned, a salad is a salad is a salad. and you dont want to reduce the colonists as you get more robots if you are trying to get the 300 acheivement. 500 colonists and 150 robots are easy to attain once you know the foibles of the AI. it should be 3 airlocks facing the landing pads followed by an O2 generator and then a security dome with atleast 6 security desks and the dome constantly prioritized. with that setup the O2 generator provides a buffer zone to aid reaction time and with the security dome always prioritized, it will always(more or less) be fully manned. you dont even need to set an alert when attacked. the guards will automatically rush in and wipe them out before they even pass the O2 generator. plus the 3 airlocks aid in getting colonists/robots in and out quickly during trades/emergencies. you should also have the medical bay immediately off the security dome for the guards that always get injured during an attack. it also helps when youre accepting injured or irradiated visitors to get them treated quickly.

@Mr_Spock5127 жыл бұрын
He was probably waiting for some missing resources (Metal/Bioplastic) in order to build what you wanted. At the beginning of the game, the priority should be Workers (Metal/Bioplastic) and Biologists (Vegetables/Starch) until you have reached survivability. Once that is done you should then bring in more Engineers to get your Manufacturing and Maintenance (Spares) going.
@Graxster8 жыл бұрын
I'll add another beginner tip: Don't make the same mistake I did and build a Starport without looking at the power consumption. It uses 33 power! When you recycle the landing ship, you get 50 metal and 40 plastic. Write down what each structure takes, and for each size. Decide which things you want right away, and you can maximize your construction. For example, you can afford to build the larger water collector, a large solar panel, a large wind turbine, a large O2 generator, and a large power collector. This saves you aggravation later on as you expand. Just make sure you have enough to build: small canteen with water fountain and food machine, small dorm and at least 1 bunk bed, small processing plant and one metal and one plastic fabrication machines, a mine, and a biodome and a few starchy plants. Don't bother with food variety. Grow all wheat, which gives you food and starch. Then make a lab with meat synthesizers and together they make "burgers". Build a Radio Antenna once you're fairly well established. It allows you to get money and/or prestige by helping ships in distress.
@GoodCleanGaming8 жыл бұрын
+Graxster Great tips. I did write down the starting resources plus the landing ship recycle resources for making the plan in the video. However, at the time, malnutrition was a bit misunderstood. It was thought to be caused by lack of food variety when it was actually caused by lack of recipe use. It's definitely best to just focus on making any of the two-ingredient recipes. Agreed also on the radio antenna. However, be careful, as you can receive some distress calls that can be very demanding on your food, medical supplies, oxygen, etc. Completely worth it though if you can handle the extra load.

you CAN kinda control what they eat. make only wheat and meat, plus a touch of tomatos, all in front of a storage and a canteen and it'll produce more burgers and pasta and less basic meals (the latter causes malnutrition).
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+sbraz That's a true statement. I've learned as much since making the tutorial. Making nothing but Wheat+Meat+Tomatoes = Burgers and Pasta, and allows you to balance how much starch you get by balancing between Wheat and Tomatoes. It works out well. Wheat+Meat alone and you drown in starch, so Tomatoes make a great counterbalance. Thank you for posting the tip here. :)

I found that if Prioritizing a Bio-Dome makes a big difference. To feed my first 7 colonists, my first Bio-Dome has 2 Pea Pads, 1 Lettuce pad, and 1 Tomato Pad (since 1 Lettuce Unit, 1 Tomato Unit, and 1 Peas Unit = 3 Salad units). all of these are high maintenance crops, that is a total of 4 high maintenance crops. Without high priority on that Bio-Dome, they are all at Very Poor Condition in a heartbeat, but if I do set the Bio-Dome to high Priority, even though it is the only Bio-Dome, for some reason my first 2 biologists are able to maintain all 4 of those high priority crops to good-excellent condition, and in a few days, I wind up with 50-100 vegetables in storage, and nothing I can do with them
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+NXTerminator579 That's really interesting. I always assumed high priority would just prioritize the job above other jobs for the same class. I wonder if it also extends the window in which colonist will work before stopping to satisfy other needs. Hmmmm...
@nxterminator57968 жыл бұрын
+Good Clean Gaming I think your right there are other notes as well: * Non-prioritized buildings and components are a higher priority than active, prioritized, resource-consuming components. this means that an interior structure with low priority will get dibs on your Bioplastic before your Workbenches and Spares Workshops can get any. I guess I can understand, but I wish I could at least put them on hold or something. * Prioritized Mines have a higher priority than prioritized Processing Plants. This means that if you have both your Mine and your Processing Plant with your Metal Processors set to high priority, your initial 3 Workers on the Mars world would spend their entire working hours in the Mine, and pay no attention to the Metal Processors that now have Ore in them. I would think that in this scenario, all 3 would go to the mine, produce 1 ore, and one of them would then leave to process the ore, but no. Furthermore, if I turn off the Mine's high priority, and just leave it on the metal Processors, I would only ever have like 1 worker in there at max * Active components that require maintenance seem to have higher priority than carrying. I watched as my low morale colonists let 7 units of alcoholic drinks that I got them from a trade decay on the Landing Pad before they made any movement to carry them into the base, even just within the Airlock 2 feet away just to drink them at the doorway (I had no bots left, nor did I have a Bot Production Facility). * Alerts can be called even if your only Control Center is disabled. All in all, I feel that the developers need to implement a Help section on Priority Hierarchy, as well as make a Tutorial that is more comprehensive on what dangers you will have to face and why you may face them. The latter doesn't have to eliminate the trial-and-error experience, but it should at least explain the complex elements of the game that you absolutely need to know if you want to have any chance of survival, then after explaining these concepts, the player can have all the info to make a reasonable, potentially functional strategy, rather than watching his/her colony die 50 times over before he/she even begins to grasp the concepts.

I was doing so well, but then everyone died from starvation because they didn't build the Solar Panel fast enough and we stopped being able to make meals, even though we had lots of veggies and meat. Had 66 colonists!

it's like at night time the engineers sleep and meteors get through because nobody is manning their posts.
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+Damian Rangi That's completely true. Almost everyone triggers to sleep right when it's night time. I guess the only way to prevent that is not having enough beds for everyone to sleep at once I guess... :)

Very good, I was waiting to build the spaceport until everything else and it was taking so long. I have played game time of 11 days and have way too many sandstorms with no solar flares yet. The worst I have seen so far is meteor strikes hitting all over, usually hitting my connectors.

About halfway you say you need to have a console, a guard, and a security center to be able to issue alerts, that is incorrect, you can issue alerts with the security center alone, and save the materials and especially the resource consumption of the guard idling there before you get any visitors.

great advice but the way you said it really sucks. Not a wonder you didn't get a response.

Awesome video man, found you via the steam community. I think your tutorial should be added to the guide section, some really strong tips in here for new and experienced players alike. Cheers. Also FYI, you don't need a security console/guard, the alert options are enabled even with an empty control room built.
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+mako sn Much appreciate, Mako! Just happy that I'm helping people. Also, great tip on not needing a security console and guard. I didn't think of trying the alerts with the empty room until later, so this is a really great point.

Thanks for the video, I've had to restart my base about 10 times now for various reasons. This game is so unforgiving.
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+Mahgeetah The start can be very unforgiving. The deeper you get into a level, as long as you stay ahead of the next crisis and stockpile your goods, the easier it gets. Take your eye off just one necessary resource and it all falls apart. Great game! :)
@wastedwatts4 жыл бұрын
That is a good start with excellent advice, but I need to try it. I am impressed, whereas with other videos about this game, not so much. After more than a few starts I am wondering how you are going to reach survival status without running out of something like metal to build with. You keep saying to build the bigger structures and that doesn't seem to work due to the limited resources provided to start with. The problem with recycling something already built, is you don't get back the bio-plastic normally (as you stated). Even the metal might come up short, so you end up wasting resources that take a lot of time to have. I will have to try your layout since it looks practical and a good starting option for future expansion. I don't remember solar flares, so maybe that was something they took out of the game later.

Its a good idea to make a ship landing zone with 3+ airlocks and a massive stockpile for trading purposes. it lets you trade lots of items fast with little traffic

Hey nice build and video but what about the Robots??
@Longerbow9 жыл бұрын
Good tutorial, but the best advice for me was that after the base becomes self sufficient, you need to take time and build slowly, otherwise you will find youself running out of metal and spare parts..... By the way: I noticed that only the windmills and solar panels (and building/connectors hit by meteors) need spare parts.... do other structures also wear down (albeit very slowly) or it is just those 2?
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+Dragonblade Building slowly is a great tip. Thanks for sharing. I believe it's just Windmills and Solar Panels for spares, yes.

Good Clean Gaming i just noticed it when i built my 1st control room cause i actually read what the game was telling me to do like i usually don't do. Question do u think it would be a good idea to place the control room near if not connected to the room that's connected to airlock where visitors are coming from so if there is a problem the guards won't have far to go to get to them?

Can you do an updated 2019 version of this, because the oxygen system has changed and so has a few other things, like rn Im at the exact same point. Just added the factory and I have 27 colonists and 91 veggies and 7 synth meat. Aswell as I have seen like 7 sandstorms on 1 game and probably 100+ on others but no solar flares.

Really useful tips. I particularly found the initial base layout tips useful. I'm currently on my seventh attempt to build a viable base and this one currently has 57 settlers so it's reasonably stable. However, one thing I don't fully understand at the moment is how to expliot the traders efficiently. So, any tips on that would be useful.

Hey, Just started playing this game but theres one thing that akways goes wrong, I build my base on 2 planets and everytime I hit around 70 people they starve and everything goes wrong! No wind, no food, no trading ships to buy food. nothing. I think game does it on purpose but I may be wrong.
@GoodCleanGaming8 жыл бұрын
+ONEARMEDBAND1T Sorry about the late reply. Things have been really busy lately. That certainly sounds like something is going wrong with your game. Is it consistently happening after a certain number of days? Are all the colonists getting sick or injured? Are you running out of water or electricity? Sometimes, when one thing goes bad, it can cause everything else to go bad at the same time, like when electricity goes out, it stops biodome food from growing.

hi. nice video. i have a question about the dorms vs cabins. i've made a base which was about 4 times the size of the base at the end of your video and i only got cabins. but it's really anoying that you can't choose which kind of colonists is living where. so any thoughts on just using dorms and multi/bar-dome for moral, or is cabins nessesary in the long run?
@GoodCleanGaming9 жыл бұрын
+john Frost I have avoided cabins like the plague. They take up way too much space and hinder base design. I prefer using a multi dome and bar to handle morale and leave everyone in dorms.
