You're hitting the afterburner before they're oriented downward if you're accelerating forward. I'm a scythe pilot and I can confirm they can work perfectly fine for the reverse maneuver, save that you don't have the visual confirmation of their orientation -- you have to judge when to hit them by timing. Start practicing by hitting the afterburner later and later in the maneuver until it works.

Afterburner isn't required to do this. I just roll over with mouse (or bind it to keyboard to roll faster), and then use pitch down on my mouse to flip over. It is a lot easier and faster than in the video and works just fine if moving forward.

Ok guys, so the main help is when you are in 3rd person and just watch the white lines caused by the esf as you turn. You can reverse thrust only if they stop appearing which is about 2/3rds of the turn based on your speed. That's what helped me the most. Ed.: I use the scythe.

Tried this many many times last night. Resulted in my death approximately 80% of the time. If you're doing this when someone is directly behind you shooting, then from their perspective you're just slowing down and moving upward, which is a VERY easy target to hit. However, when I started using the banking turn in combat (from your earlier video), I found it much easier to shake off the guy firing at me, and I was much harder to hit.

Very useful. I already use something something similar-ish to this. I will try your version. Its hard to manipulate the scythe for vertical afterburner due to no visual indication but it just requires a lot more practice... Another manuver I like is the upwards stall followed by vertical afterburner. No turning, but it can often get you straight on the tail of a chasing ESF, and since you aren't even turning it is often hard for most pilots to anticipate an counter.

it works in a scythe, the timing is just tricky since we don't have actuating thrusters... keep trying and you'll get it, it's at that transition time from flight to hover

I've seen this maneuver used against me in game before. But only ever performed by a reaver. I will definitely be trying this tonight in my scythe to see if it's capable of pulling off this kind of maneuver.

I think you need to start including ideal engagement targets for these maneuvers. A scythe pilot that is paying attention will have no trouble if he hits the brakes when you respond to this. With no bullet drop, he just has to put your reticle in front of your azimuth of your maneuver since your maneuver velocity in 2 directions is only temporary. If he is using the default gun, with range, he will pick you off. 1 on 1 of course.

I look forward to missile-dodging tips. Other than afterburning away from distant missiles (mostly ground-to-air) at full speed or hiding behind terrain I don't really know how to evade them. Having a backup measure for countering this when flares are spent would be great to add to my repetoire :)

THe scythes engines work very similar to the mossie and reaver - they just don't have the visual indication and you will have no "training wheels" while learning the manouver. you will just have to practice it enough that you can feel when the afterburn will give you vertical lift.

We lack the extra oomph compared to other ESFs. We have the vertical lift, but whenever I try these kind of moves, I actually move sower as compared to say a Reaver.

Your guides have truly improved my flight control ten fold over all three factions. I personally am a TR Mossie pilot for the most part (however my friends are the silly cultist Vanu) and I can honestly say thank you for all the tips and maneuvers. I would like to ask a question real quick question on the mossie primary. Which of the cannons would be better in air to air and better as an overall medium? Do the TR get any form of of something like the Vortek that shreds things to pieces?

Hey ironfist, it looks like you use something closer to an aileron turn (no lateral movement) to flip your craft upside down (before you start pitching down). Wouldn't it make it harder to track you if you used half a barrel roll (helical movement) instead? Executing the half barrel roll by continuously pitching down during your roll (while "w" key is held if turning left like in a banking turn)

mossie is faster. you will need to brake more before activating afterburner. Also dont use spacebar until momentum is already dead, or you end up adding to it. Also keep in mind the airframe you use - hover has better brakes and will help do this faster. racer frame is faster and will need more braking from full speed. Hover is probably the ideal thing for this manouver, and reaver being the slowest is probably the ideal stock-vehicle. They are all a little different.

I don't know what you mean. You can't hit space(Default key) to get vertical lift in your scythe? My scythe works just like that. There's also pitch up/down which I don't think are bound to easy-to-reach keys from default.

Been trying this one in the mossy with no luck. Would love to hear how other mossy pilots are fairing. Our thrusters don't seem to turn downwards anywhere near as soon as the ones in the video.

I think he said he got the hover airframe. Have you tried that? Before I got the hover airframe rank 1 on my scythe I couldn't use "Space" to lift like he does, but after getting it I can do all sorts of new directions quickly.

spacebar - the "vertical thruster" is the "go up" key basically.

He is using afterburners with the vertical lift, which is why it only works after his engines have rotated. I'm not sure how this works for Scythes, since their engines don't rotate for VTOL.

I just roll with the default fuel tanks in the alt weapon slot. Most people don't, so it lets me outrun anything I can't out-turn pretty easily. Much more effective than bailing. ;) Also, pilot skill is far more important overall than the aircraft he's in.

Nevermind what I said about the banking turn, it is an Immelman exactly, the only slight difference is that fighters in this game are VTOLs, and, therefore have the capability of vertical thrust, but that does not facilitate the renaming of maneuvers that have been called the same thing throughout the history of Air Combat Maneuvering.

There is a very good way to dodge them fly low go around anything very sharply and fast and then you have a good chance the missile will lose you and don't just fly in a circle please the missile is fast so it will catch up to you if you don't put anything in between it and you

Something called analog thrust. It's unbounded by default and will drop your speed immediately. Look it up.

Well I've checked it today and it seems no matter what speed or direction you fly the afterburner will always give you forward thrust.

I dont' know how you do this manuever so fast. Doesn't the reaver have to slow down a lot so that the thrusters are facing down? Usually when I slow down is when the thrusters are facing down. Is there a way to make them face down without slowing down?

actually every time I see someone pull the reverse maneuver I just pull out and turn back into the fight from another angle which by then they think i have just left when in reality i am lining them up while they have no airspeed and are a sitting duck.

I execute this maneuver all the time whether close or long range and nobody ever takes 80% of my health off. Perhaps practice the timing of the v-tol so you can do it faster.

I think reaver is the 2nd fastest or 2nd slowest and has the fastest after burner speed

I still have trouble when an enemy ESF is right behind me on my tail. I try to out-run them which usually fails. I try to just pitch up and do a roll/do a bank turn but they can easily see the beams of light that follow your ESF and continue to follow you so that doesn’t work. I try flying in reverse but i seem too slow so I die and lastly I try hiding behind something. I seems like if they are close on your tail, your death is predetermined. What do you do?

Please show first person view at least a couple of times in these videos. It's really really helpful to see the artificial horizon. The third person view tends to not leave any frame of reference when you're pointed at the sky.

How can we determine where the missile is coming from when A.) Its behind us which if we slow down we'll get hit and B) The Render distance does not render A2A missiles if their not in your render distance. They either need to nerf the crap our of Lock ons Or Make them dodgeable Or finally fix the stupid render distance. Take it from somebody whos spend over 200+ hours just flying an ESF

not true what you have to do is quickly determine where the missile is coming from then get the missile to turn quickly it cannot compete with ESF turning radii but the lead pursuit the missiles have cause it to be very difficult to accomplish I just want to know how he can tell where it is coming from.

That looks a lot like a WWI era S-turn modified slightly for the VTOL functionality of PS2 aircraft. Seriously, WWI dogfighters have been an invaluable resource for me personally.

If a Scythe or Mosquito is on your tail, basically just bail and deny him a kill. Mosquito are harder hitting than you are and Scythes are the same except they can turn on the spot 180 without any complex keybinding pitch crap or nothing - you won't lose a Scythe.
