@@CAMIKAZE78 If i got it right, what you basically said is that planetside franchise will probably resign from the planetside idea, making actual community leave for sake of modern audience - in other words, throwing out all the community loving this game for is original idea and style in order to make money on another bland dumb arcadeish battle royale like fortnite... "planetside" arena was razed to the ground because it has no more >Planetside< in it, hence if any sequel will raise it's hand on planetside original idea again it shouldn't be called planetside anymore. Planetetside is Planetside, it's originality is it's core and it's not a battle royale or any other kind of repetitive gamestyle among all known games around. If they decide to erase any even smallest element from original Planetside's idea of biggest ever territorial strategic fights in FPS genre with 2000 people on one map without loading screens, if they will raise their hands against this godlike idea, i will frickin sue them for killing my favorite franchise. Better for them to not even try.

This can only mean 1 of 2 things to me 1: Another company wants to reboot, or continue developing he Planetside IP 2: Another company wants to squeeze $ out of a dying game over it's last couple years (5.9 million is VERY CHEAP, with a couple fancy patches, a bit of resurgence hype, and a more expensive cash shop, they could make that back in a year or two while destroying the game)

More population=More Fights A good step forward would be the Devs recommending controller settings on Steam's Big Picture Mode. Have it basically the same as the PlayStation version but obviously modified with other features in the game.

It would barely be noteworthy. PlanetSide's current mechanics, as presented in the current iteration, is just the worst of both worlds. You can't be as powerful by yourself as you can in say Battlefield, but it refuses to commit to anything more strategy demanding than just dog-piling more people on one capture zone than the other team. I would say Squad has straight up the better system. Meaningful construction and logistics, over huge maps with plenty of tactical opportunities and pitfalls. Fights can still be very intense without needing literally hundreds of players shoved into narrow spaces. And of course, actually talking to nearby people to coordinate and asking for information is basically mandatory.

Man, like, I know Planetside and the broader mmofps format hasn't been the kind of commercial success we've seen in recent years from games like Apex, Fortnite, League, GTA Online, and CSGO; however, it'd break my heart to see the IP go the way of modern BRs, looter shooters, etc for the sake of "Profit". There's something so incredibly distinctive to Planetside that just doesn't exist anywhere else on the market I'm gonna hold out hope (even if it's fueled by hopium) that the new IP holders made the purchase because they see Planetside as being a unique asset and a gateway into a market that hasn't been hit yet. Seeing the opportunity to take their own swing at a massive shooter, maybe tapping into the popularity of Battlefield and BattleBit. Ultimately, I'm gonna lean on the side of "you buy an IP for the name recognition and brand". And Planetside has a very specific brand

I actually don't think it'd be a Battle Royale, that subgenre seems to be losing steam. The Finals, for instance, is an absolutely fantastic game that nails the fundementals, yet its playerbase while good isn't a smash hit because it launched into an overcroweded genre. No, I think Helldivers (along w/ earlier titles like Deep Rock & Vermintide/Darktide) show us that the new trend in FPS games is non-zombie horde coop shooters, and I think that you could actually more easily convert the Planetside flavoring to _that_ subgenre, sacrilegious as it is. Think of a reskin of Helldivers with Planetside lore & aesthetics, where you play as any of the three factions and go against NPC enemies of the other two.

The tide is going out for BR. That's not the same as "dying", which I didn't claim, but it's not where the industry trend is anymore. It’s a shame this game has struggled so much and isn’t doing so well. I’ve drifted away from gaming as a whole quite a bit over the past year or so (idk if it’s permanent or just a dip) and I’ve felt a lil bad I haven’t been playing Planetside 2 haha. It’s a brilliant concept, tbh it’s a marvel of game engineering, and I’ve had a lot of love for it since I was a kid. If it is coming to an end soon hopefully one day another game comes along to carry on its legacy, directly or spiritually.

I think one of the biggest problems with PS2 vs PS1 is the resources/fuel of battle are way too abstracted. In PS1, bases lost power if they weren't resupplied by the nanite fuel truck known as the ANT. I suspect that they didn't add this system in because they were worried people would be bored by it, when it was one of the most exhilarating things you could do. convoys protected by air support and an attacking team doing everything they could to stop the resupply. It was great. And I guess that dovetails into the overall lack of diversity in PS2. You can play CoD, or World of Tanks, or Flight Simulator. There isn't really dedicated resupply drivers, or base engineers, or spies. People built roles with the tools they were given. But the class system really pigeonholes you. What if I want to be a medic sniper? Or an engineer hacker? Or a lightweight pilot with a rocket launcher? You don't really get those choices in PS2, because everything is class based and not inventory based. I get having to keep up with modern game sensibilities. PS1 is a game from 2003 and I'm an old man. I just think they gave up on way too many little things that could have done just fine in today that made it special.

The Planetside IP lost its magic when it went to PS2 in a lot of ways. No effective base defenses, instead opting for non defensive bases with multiple entrances on every level. You can't effective chokepoint or defend. It became a generic FPS shooter arcade with a larger lobby.

PS2 was relatively good at launch but only for a short while. And yes, the battles we had in PS1 were beyond legendary in scope and strategy IMO compared to any of PS2. You had to constantly adapt to the situation at hand (yay loadouts) and actually think hard about where you were going to contribute. Remember, we came from games that were NOT made for the wider audience aka "casual gamer". Games back then had more specific mechanics that allowed extra layers and complexity lending to absolute wonderful chaos (where PS players thrive let's be honest). Some younger players may be of the mind that newer is better but even veteran PS2 players know better. But I think they forget that #2 in the name. It came from a predecessor from a more raw time of gaming where games were at least more led by developers vs. publishers (games weren't at 'Big Business' level yet). But as with all things they change and the past melts away. I'm thankful to have played PS1 at launch in '03 - those memories are irreplaceable. No current game as marked even half the checkboxes while also matching anything near the scope of the original. PS1 was and may be for decades, the best attempt at blending group command based strategy with FPS. That level of cooperation just isn't seen with a wide audience game. I mean we were at Deep Rock Galactic levels of fervent team play let's be honest. And DRG is now seen as one of the 'first' (which is fine - it's a great game which makes a fine point on the importance of cooperation and being a core gameplay mechanic). We can still feed parts of our soul that were satiated on the whole with PS1, with current games. Again, DRG I highly suggest as well as Helldivers 2. They won't scratch the itch of thousands of autonomous players in the same field, but the feeling of hard core coop IS there and it's breathed new life into many of us veterans IMO. Remember that in all things, current generations always forget where things came from and that 'It's already been done but better' in many cases. But they also have different needs being 3rd and 4th generation video game players. That's a whole 'nother story but just understand that newer gamers on the whole just want/need different experiences. Although there will always be that fringe element that enjoys games based on older development values. Anyway, be thankful we had PS1 and had some of the best gaming experiences others will likely never have. And I know PS2 players feel the same way. I like to reminisce about PS1 and do place it over PS2 but #2's community are still our community and have the same concerns and desires that PS1 players do, just in a more modern gamespace. Maybe one day we'll all end up with something that scratches most of the itch. But you WILL have to dig for it amongst the endless waves of empty games constantly being released.

They're the US, Colorado based subsidiary of Bay Tree Private Equity- a UK firm. We are looking at a Heroes and Generals situation here most likely. They're going to attempt to monetize and squeeze whatever penny is left out of the game to recoup their purchase and then probably sell off the IP down the line. It is very easy to trace back companies like this with a bit of effort, don't know why all these places and KZbinrs are reporting on this without putting in the effort.

let me clear up IPs a little bit for you. the ownership of a IP = the legal right to the branding, naming and associated assets. I.e the IP owner of Planetside makes a Royalty for all purchases made in the planetside IP, be that game sales, in app purchases, memberships, plushies, books etc etc. it is NOT a ownership of the game itself, and it is NOT a ownership of the studio behind the game. its a ownership of the BRAND. for example you could (if they wanted to sell it) buy the APPLE logo and name from APPLE, from then on you would be paid a royalty commision on every product sold in the APPLE name and LOGO branding. however, you would NOT be able to decide How apple is going to develop its next products, and IF they will. but apple would now have to get YOUR permission to make a new apple product. so in short IF Planetside 3 is to be made OR a planetside spinoff BAYTREE needs to approve it. as they are the only ones with a right to it. however for planetside 2 the only difference is, who gets a cut of the revenue, not how the game is developed or if its developed. overall this should have next to no impact on the game. HOWEVER this could mean they are looking to make a Planetside 3, or a spinoff game within the planetside IP and lore. be that with daybreak or a different studio. but they get no rights or ownership over planetside 2, (except for being able to cancel any contract for the IP license etc so daybreak could lose the IP at which point they wouldn't be able to make any new sales with the game, killing it)

I've always kept my eye on Planetside 2. I've played since beta and even dabbled in PS1 when I was little. I always hope PS2 does well but it has been difficult to get back into it after a couple years away. A persistent world is a huge selling point. I don't even play other shooters, just look to PS2 when I want to play FPS.

The last time I played this game was on pc and it was on the new water map they added. It was very sad and frustrating because there were very few people playing and the people me and my friend were encountering were like 4 or 5 people in a clan dropping in. So we couldn't really do anything to stop them capturing our stuff. The game is enjoyable though when you have someone to be your dedicated gunner in any vehicle and I do want either a sequel or another game like it.

If you look at MetalCore, it has a similar story, when I played it had similar classes, as well as being considered a "MMOFPS" even though from what I've read and heard so far, they want to make it 50v50v50, and quite a bit of their focus is on using mech/BFRs? ImmutableX funds it, so they might have been working on Planetside 3 under an alias and plan on moving it in that direction.

I very vaguely remember a game like planetside, but smaller. Instead of a continent, you had one medium sized map to fight over The game ran very similarly, but it had bots to fill the slots, and the mechs you piloted were about 2ft taller than those in planetside It came out, if im not mistaken, on xbox360. Anyone remember it? An extremely short lived title, of course.

I do think this is a sign of a positive future for the game. The recent changes and removal of the Conduit CTF system from some bases have had a noticeable impact on bringing combat to the many bases it was first implemented. These planned Sunderer changes i am not sure about yet however.

I think the future of the mmofps genre, if it has one, lies in a fresh start. Whether that's a PlanetSide 3 or something new with a brutally honest post-mortem so the same mistakes aren't made. I think the genre is niche enough too that it's going to need a company really interested in making that kind of game and cultivating their own player base, not trying to appeal to everyone.

I see a good chance in a reenvisioned Planetside Arena like game. A new attempt trying to bring more structure and simplicity into the franchise to make it more accessible to a wider audience while still keeping the key elements of Planetside.

I loved planetside 1 and 2, I played the hell out of Planetside 1, I stopped playing planetside two 7 years ago because my pc died and didnt have money to buy a new one, I really miss playing it, too bad it never got the amount of players it deserves, it's such a fun game at least by the time I didn't get to play it anymore.

PS2 was my after-school obsession for years - I remember when it first started to decline. It makes me sad to see it in this state - kind of like watching your father, strong man that he is, wither away and become brittle, weak. Much like watching my father die slowly in mind-erasing agony part of me wishes Planetside would go out suddenly with a bang, just an announcement, maybe a cinematic, and then done. It would be better than watching something that meant so much (even parasocially) go like this. Maybe when it's good and dead we'll see something new - I don't expect it though. As I've aged I've come to view the future with suspicion and hatred.

I must of missed a bit, last time I checked in and played PS2 they just added in the boats and more water content, figured they were still going strong. Sad to see. As a vet of C&C Renegade it sucks to see the shooter genre gravitate towards the COD shooters and the sad state Battlefield is in now. We need these niche types of shooters to keep the fresh ideas and innovation coming in.

If planetside does get another sequal it needs to either return full send to what the original planetside had, or completely separate itself from what it is/was, what it had was a unique you needed a hacker to get in the base you had to capture the outposts first then plant bugs and viruses etc and then over run the facility with each faction having multiple planes, multiple ground vehicles weapons skillz etc. It was unique and what it turned into was...CTF with extra steps super dumbed down and even when it was released...behind the times as far as game mechanics go. So if it does get a squeal it will need to again return to form or be a massive departure maybe even story driven give the endless war and end or multiple endings who knows, only thing that makes me sad is if this gets shut down im going to be out thousands of dollars on cosmetics X3

i think that a plentside 3 announcement with tons of progress checkpoints/communication with a big STEAM release with MARKETTING would be enough. dont even have to change the game. im new to this game. its honestly a bit confusing at first. and even now its taken a friend to explain a ton of things to me. but, with that all said, its been phenominal. it really is a shooter than outshines most other shooters.

I am hoping that this IP will not get the Blacklight Retribution treatment. Both these games came out the same year but BLR died because the dedicated dev team couldn't be dedicated enough. And I love both these games as they are the standard I hold most games up to.

Planetside 2 is still a great title, what id give to see it properly rebooted and rebuilt similar to the recent release of Helldivers 2. Add in some orbital ship to ship activities (i.e boarding, surface to orbit craft, ect..) and you might have a cool modern title on your hands...

it would also be insane to not look at the figures from the first few years of planetside 2 that dropped and got pretty much no updates of worth and had no real monetization and to think that making PS3 and pumping it full of the current style of monetization would not make you a huge amount of money, The first few years of this game were dead from a development point of view but still had a playerbase so large it had more servers that were pretty much always packed out 24/7 there is no competition in the market of planetside 2 sure we have other first person shooters but the largest we have serve wise is battlebit and after that we have BF2042 and they dont even compete on a map and player count level of PS2 the market for this style of game has shown it has no competition and a long lasting playerbase.

Perhaps I was playing the game wrong but the last time I played planetside 2 I was fighting some high leveled guy that did not die no matter how much I shot him. I think the concept of this game is amazing but it will only ever reach its potential if there are drastic changes to the game. I think this acquisition sounds exciting. I don't know what the player-base thinks. perhaps they think I am completely wrong and if so I would love to know why because this was a game I regretted not being able to get into

If you hold the fire button, your bloom increases, making you extremely inaccurate. Besides that, he could've stimmed, overshield if he was playing Heavy, maybe you were shooting at a MAX mech, those take a ton of damage

What worries me the most is that it's a shell company. And,I wonder how far the copyright laws/IP protection laws go, to allow the new owners to potential shut down fan projects/competitors. I also wonder if the dev team are going to stay or being let go for another team/live support mode. At the same time,I dont blame RPG to sell it. The IP isnt really that successful,let alone profitable, for what it offers and cost to produce.

Interesting. I would hope that they take a third crack at the MMO FPS. As I think the concept is interesting, but I also think PS2 missed the mark in a number of ways. Free to Play is probably the only way it could work in the current age, but the problems it introduced to the system were there from day one. Especially with the way they reworked certs from being levels which allowed you to specialize in operating different pieces of kit, to unlocking upgrades for those pieces of kit and "working around" the need to purchase the guns with real world money. To cutting off the basic armor for each class to sell it back to the players as a cosmetic and the various camo paint-schemes causing just enough delay in recognition to unbalance fights against people with it. The big misstep I see was in launching with one big continent. In this, I think they fell for the marketing hype of the original during development, and didn't think through the mess it would make. The original promised 3-way fights of up to around 150 odd plays on each side. In practice, this never happened, because the individual islands made for battle corridors that segmented the fight into multiple fronts, each of which had their own front lines thanks to the lattice system forcing a small number of bases to be fought over on each continent. The Devs for PS2 further missed the mark here in base design... which is a long diatribe in its own right... but they took multiple ways to weaken and dislodge defenders while the defenders still had a strong advantage and turned everything into a King of the Hill frag-fest. I don't think PS2 is actually salvagable. But, I don't think someone would buy Planetside simply to shut it down as is. I am curious as to what they will do, but any news on that front is a long, long way off.
