@@berrymanter1191 see doctor Ken Berry or Doctor Anthony Chaffe about deficiencies of a vegan diet. I get all of the B12 in need naturally from meat and eggs. Vegans are sadly miss informed. A word of caution, I personally eat loads of starchy foods, so really don't find McDougall's stuff much off the mark but do include things like protein from plant source and exercise. Assuming you mean McDougal not McGregor as there is no such plant doc....this is doctor Greger. But there is this from forks over knives site in reference to McDougall's retirement in 2018... "But after a year of personal hardships-Mary underwent shoulder surgery, he broke his leg, they lost their home in the 2017 Santa Rosa fires-McDougall decided it was time to pass the torch."" I heard but was unable to provide from other source, just could not find it today, the broken leg was in reference to a fall in the bathroom. He is old but not real old, so a broken leg from a fall in the bath, osteoporosis which typically runs concurrent with sarcopenia. They are rarely if ever found apart, excepting patients in hospitals in bed rest conditions. I per example fell from a 24 foot ladder working on a second story roof last october at roughly his age..suffered no broken anything, hit my side hit my hip my face even my ankle with a severe sprain but no broken bones. Why no sarcopenia is why. Which is very important, All people fall at times a break or not is likely sarcopenia or not.

Yeah, the thing about chicken is that the breeds that are grown for meat all have the chicken version of the Prader-Willi syndrome : they cant stop eating if there is food available. Then once these chooks are dead and processed they are injected with brine AND SOY PROTEIN. The soy is to get the total protein back up as the fat content is so high (and it means it weighs more and you can make more $$). I used to work in a chicken factory for 3 years. I dont eat chicken more than once every 18 months or so these days🤦

Chris - are you going to do a deep dive into Peter Attia's book? That would be so helpful. His points about sarcopenia are valid. I had to be on bed rest for 2 weeks and was shocked at the muscle loss I experienced. BUT...all his emphasis on protein to extend life as well as the need to do intense training to boost VO2 max...while I was reading all I could think was "Hmmm, well that is not what the Okinawans are doing..." It would be really good to hear your take on his book.
@Viva-Longevity
@Viva-Longevity Жыл бұрын
He does have a lot of good things to say, so his book is challenging to review. But he is not a longevity researcher and just completely blows longevity researchers off on several topics. I just don't understand why. I don't think it's profit motive. Dr. Greger isn't a longevity researcher either, but he listens very carefully to them and is willing to change his position as he understands more.
@HidingFromFate
@HidingFromFate Жыл бұрын
Attia has struck me as a really curious and interestingly problematic public figure in the "health space". Like you stated, he has a lot of good things to say. But he's seems to have adopted almost a, "throw my hands up" stance regarding nutritional science. Apart from a strong view on protein requirements and some basic ideas which everyone seems to share (eat unprocessed food, not too much, etc.), he seems to look upon much of the nutritional research and evidence as still being far too unsettled to trust yet. So he concentrates the vast majority of his own personal efforts and outward communications regarding the physical activity aspects of health, with lesser nods to getting enough sleep and reducing stress. But exercise is what he views as being the most important factor. Or at least, the most evidence-based. I have an armchair pop-psych theory about why he might discount much of the nutritional evidence, but I'll keep that to myself as it can only be a speculation at this point. @@Viva-Longevity
@CraigHocker
@CraigHocker Жыл бұрын
@@HidingFromFate One thing to understand about Attia is that he is OCD when it comes to exercise. He has become negative about water fasts for the simple reason that he refuses to do only light moderate exercise like walking instead of his usual full workouts during fasts even though the studies show that moderate mild exercise is optimal for muscle tissue retention.

Thank you so much for your input. I definitely have to read your book / listen to. Now some suggestions from me: * change your shoes to barefoot one. Those kind of shoes where invented in the middle ages because they look cool. They destroy the natural way of walking and standing. The wrong offset causes your knee to be in a wrong default state, causing problems upper up the chain.Absurd how many civilization problems are caused by this. I personally wear 5 fingers only if possible. * slow juicer green smoothy is perfect extract. You can do it all 2-3 days in a batch. the fiber product I use to cook . Feels just right in the morning. * Lots of fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kafir, .... Together with zwieback you can restart in 1 day your digestif tract * Lots of stretching. It has been shown it reduces cancer risks an prevents mobility loss. I do it like 10 minutes a day * Vibration plate. 5- 25 hz - nothing like it * zone 2 & zone 4+ training

I drink teas and workout on my breaks, I will eat fewer protein bars and more fruit/veggies and hopefully I will start to lose that extra weight and improve my health.

I struggle with Peter Attia. He's far more knowledgeable and experienced than I am, and I value his perspective. Particularly over mine. Had I read his last book and taken it seriously say, 15 years ago, I would be in a better place. I do find it interesting how firmly he holds into animal proteins and animal-based foods as strictly superior. He's gradually making his way over to more vegetarian-friendly ideology, but I do wonder if he's so slow to do it for non-scientific reasons. Regardless, he's an intelligent person with great information worth listening to. I'm far from capable of criticizing. Also, what an incredible shirt?! 7:34

He might be viewer biased, same as Hubertman and caught in the pleasure trap. Also he believes in aggressively treating with statins early to lower ldl-C/ApoB to very low which he might be right about some sub population so food is less of an issue for him. But I see his language change about it, saying some could lower it with diet, obviously without talking about what diet.

He let emotions take the charge. I find his disdain for nutritional epidemiology quite funny. Exercise so far at best produce like 20-40% lower heart disease mortality or incidents. Back then when I heard he said mangos are fake fruits because of the fructose content. I mean duh, u need to consume 5kg of mango to reach 3000 calories for such a big guy like him. How much fruit normal person eat? 200-500g at best. As always former athletes usually have a beef with animal protein

❤Update 10 months after buying the book: (I bought the audio AND paper version of Dr. Gregor’s book.) I highly recommend his book, How Not to Die. I dip in and out of chapters as my curiosity takes me. My health improves and for the first time in 10 years I feel like I have my premenopausal optimism. (Super helpful at 65 years old.) After 2 years of being Vegan, my overall inflammation markers dropped significantly and minor aches and pains I attributed to aging have minimized, consequently, I’m able to run and jump (jump rope), and I am so much happier. My husband has become vegan adjacent (he’s vegetarian when making cookies) to support me. He’s lost weight and become healthier. Thank you Dr Gregor! Thank you Chris and Toni for Plant Chompers!!!❤❤❤

Another excellent video, Chris!!!! Both of our wives are huge Greger fans ! I've been hearing his goofy "let's put it to the test" videos coming from her laptop for over a decade and we have signed copies of his books. You scoring an interview with him is sure to earn me extra points for being a fan of yours since 2008. :D I'll be the one buying this book because I've been working my way through the maze of longevity protocols for a long time. I have my guesses, but... will you please name all 6 reasons for being vegan? My wife has only 4 and health is only 1 of them. Hi Toni!!!! Great job with Dr. G!

What I’d love to see is a debate between Drs. Greger and Attia on the question of prioritizing exercise and high protein (Attia) vs plant-base nutrition and low protein (Greger). They both are smart and articulate and have huge audiences that hang on there every word, but they both can’t be right. Seems to me that they would keep such a debate civil and possibly could learn from each other, as would we. Plant Chompers, you'd be great hosts of such a show!

Studies have shown restricting protein, particularly protein high in methionine, mostly animal based, is better for longevity. The evidence is the evidence. Now if you're eating reasonable amounts of plant protein, you will be fine.

Nah Attia and Greger do not seem a good match for this debate. Greger has made up his mind and Attia is one of the most stubborn people in the business. What you would need for Attia is someone who actually knows his stuf and does the actual research and publications. Valter Longo would shred Attia into a million pieces and Sinclair will not have much sympathy for the unscientific claims either (he didn't have mercy on Huberman on that front). So maybe Attia and Christopher Garder,.. that would be a nice debate. Or maybe Attia and Liza Mosconi? Those both can really put Attia on the thinking chair because they are extreme hardhitters with high publications on regular basis.

@@y.g.1313 Probably not on channels you watch. How about the discussion on the hallmarks of aging? There are tons of vegan proponents on that consensus paper. That is one of THE most serieus discussions that was to be had in the field. But no most plant based proponents don't waste time discussing very small influence hype type of fad diet proponents. Because they solve themselves in a matter of months or years. Just not worth the effort.

Thank you Chris and Toni for this great interview of Dr. Greger from two equally interesting points of view. Chris, you seem to enjoy expanding your reading list, so in order to avoid that unfortunate and stressful recording incident in the future, you might want to read Atul Gawande's "The Checklist Manifesto" (and if you haven't yet, then you definitely want to also read "Being Mortal"). Thank you again, the work you do with Plant Chompers is infinitely valuable! And never stop with the science part, it helps a lot with using your work in class with students so that they can be taught to reason like scientists and learn to process evidence and claims themselves rather than just be presented with competing claims when they come in class with questions about toxic content like What I've Learned videos on meat.

I did a lot of research on cancer earlier this year because my urologist told me I probably had prostate cancer due to the rise in PSA. So while I was awaiting my hi def MRI appointment, I spend 8 hours a day researching prostate cancer. I happened upon Dr. Thomas Seyfried's protocols using a ketogenic diet plus pulsing glutamine to arrest and shrink cancer cells. As an experiment on myself, I went (almost) in to ketosis. Being a 99% vegan, it wasn't that difficult. I didn't really feel much different in near ketosis. But my point is that a ketogenic state may well be beneficial for someone with cancer. (My MRI showed no cancer, but now I think I know nearly everything there is to know about prostate cancer, standard of care, and alternatives...LOL)

I'm planted-based but not WFPB. I just can't seem to stay on that protocol. I lose too much weight and my body fat drops too low. Then I can't stay warm and feel underpowered all the time. I know it's a calorie balance issue, but I just can't eat enough to support my activity levels. So, processed foods work their way in. I might figure it out sometime. None of the rest of my family is plant-based anymore either. They started the journey with me but dropped off one by one. Their issue wasn't too few calories! I think they just couldn't make the transition due to taste and habit. They all eat more plants now, for the most part. If you do try plant-based, make sure you can eat enough calories and definitely build up your recipe book to ensure you adequately surprise your taste buds. Some things may not agree with you. Determine what they are and just cut them out.

@@alane3983 I completely understand. I establish diets for people almost everyday. Plus years of food testing and nutrition studies on prisoners in third world countries. Have seen all things work and all things fail. All must be case by case person by person. Must take into account the living location: new York city vs a person living on the mountain side in Peru. Must take into account economic status, job, education, likes and dislikes,...all must be considered. Just listened to a Huberman/Sinclair episode from last year. @panes840 I'm paraphrasing but he said, "my cholesterol is kind of high, but I'm trying to get it down without reducing my red meat and eggs consumption" Like dude, you obviously know what is causing your high cholesterol, how about you make meat, dairy, and eggs not 50%+ of your diet? Dr. Sinclair would say "I'm mostly vegetarian, but I never tell people what to do or give advice, I can just tell you what I do..." You mean go mostly vegetarian because of the data shows the Blue Zones were all roughly 95% plant based dieters? Let's not go the extra step that would actually support more plants in your diet, which would be nice for the Animals and us Vegans. So I walked away being able to read between the lines on some stuff, but I feel Huberman the bros that listen every time will be like "yeah, hahaha, we don't need to lower our meat intake to drop our cholesterol"

My husband and I started this late yesterday evening, and made it half way through. We will finish it this evening. We are fans and followers of Dr. Greger. I was disheartened though to hear it is aimed at 50ish folks. I'm already in my 70s and my husband nearly there. What about those of use who have already aged? There are a lot of us out here. I don't want to get younger, but this book was not available when I was 50. We have been vegan for 12 years vegetarian longer than that, and still aged. I have eaten lots of plants and whole foods since childhood (growing up in SoCal where fruits and veggies are plentiful made that a dream), but I also played outside a LOT. So, did the sun just zap me as a child and there is no hope? I hope the book addresses all age ranges and doesn't just leave us out.
