That contorted Japanese maple is stupendous, especially with the leaf structure. It's so light and airy that it seems poised for flight. Fortunately the caliper of the trunk reveals its age and strength.

Fits so well in your garden and it brings your history in the industry and hopes for the future with your plans for it. Kind of reminds me of the winding road we all travel threw life. I have several plants that remind of my own and also ones from family members that are gone and help me remember them and what they did for me. Very nice Jim!

I'm sentimental about plants too. I can sometimes remember when things happened in my life by the plants I got then. I lost my property 14 years ago & kept things in containers while we moved from rental to rental. Going on 3 years now in a place we're buying & most all the huge pots have been planted. I was a perennial plant manager when my daughter was pregnant with my grandson & spent a great deal of my salary on plants. He's 16 this year & helps me dig holes. I hope to leave a legacy of beauty for my family & have planted over graves of pets that have passed since we've lived here. Proud to be a sentimental gardener!

Thank you, Jim for the instruction for this maple. I have the same tree, for 2 yrs and I've never trimmed it. I am looking forward to the video on how to wire the branches for a more open, interesting, upright tree. Thanks so much!

Wow stunning! I love that contorted trunk. Sure is a work of art Jum. I inherited one which looks to be the same type of Japanese maple-same foliage & also turns fiery red in autumn. I just discovered the top canopy leaves are crisp likely from unusual record breaking heatwave here in UK. I certainly hope it recovers. It is in a pot. I may plant in the ground come autumn.

I have a weeping Japanese maple that is now about 7 feet tall. I do a combo of branch pruning and leaf pruning in the spring to lighten the canopy. I learned a lot from reading about what they do at the Seattle Japanese garden to prune their maples. just love it so much. Yours is beautiful.
@cpaslick12 жыл бұрын
This might sound weird, but I enjoy watching you prune things like that. I usually think "oh, it looks fine the way it is", and then you prune it, and I can see what you were aiming for, and it looks so much better. 🙂

what a fabulous specimen !!! I've always been told when pruning a japanese maple, one should prune so a butterfly can fly through without touching it's wings on any leaf and/or branch ... it's an art for sure but something, with a little practice and patience, anyone can do. thanks, as always, for sharing the info, encouragement and inspiration !!!

I love it out there next to your diamond spire gardenia and the golden falls red bud. I had to get two diamond spires which I put out front next to my large Tamukeyama that was here when we bought the house. They didn't like that snow storm in March that we got in Knoxville (as well as there in Raleigh) during their first year. I knew it was coming, even watched your video on protecting them, but we were out of town. They are slowly coming back. And every time I see that Red Bud, I want one too. I have two young Tamukeyamas that I just planted and I'm thinking about doing some sort of training. Now more so than before that I know yours is also a Tamukeyama. So stop inspiring me and adding to my August to do list. I wasn't even a gardener until we moved to this house in 2020 and now I'm thinking about training a Japanese Maple. Seriously, thanks for the inspiration!

If it's in the 100's will the Japanese maple be in summer dormancy, and will it grow roots? I just did the same thing with an edgeworthia and it goes into a full wilt every afternoon.

@JimPutnam2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the west coast version.
@markandrews54812 жыл бұрын
it wouldn't surprise me a bit that now that it is out of the pot it will be very different in fall color etc. I've bought several maples that had terrific fall color in the pot and then when in the ground they never reproduce that terrific color.... i think it has to do with them being lean in the pot, and lush while in the ground, and lush doesn't equate to good fall color.... that's just my experience....

Is it better to have a high or low grafted Japanese Maple?
@JimPutnam2 жыл бұрын
Totally depends on the ultimate look you are going for. A high graft would probably suit the space I have mine planted in better than what I have
@jennifernash46382 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if you would ever plant the maple in the ground. Do Japanese maples root as aggressively as North American maples? I've shied away from them since my house is on septic.
@JimPutnam2 жыл бұрын
Not as aggressive, but still more than other small trees
