Planting a 'Munchkin' Dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea - In this video I add a Dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea to my landscape. 'Munchkin; is a low growing variety that does a good job holding the flowers up big and tall. It gets white flowers clusters that fade to pink in the fall. Oakleaf Hydrangeas are native to the Eastern US and are generally easy to grow.

Hi! Been away for a while but here we are enjoying another great video. We have learned so much this year about hydrangeas we did so much experimenting. You just taught us more and reassured many things that we’ve learned on our own . Yet to have an oak leave hydrangea and that one is a beauty. The rain played s major role on some of our hydrangeas that didn’t do that great. Surprisingly it hasn’t rained for two days here in Jacksonville NC but can’t wait for it to stop. Awesome video and thank you for so much we have learned from you.💚💚💚💚💚💚

Hi Jim. It would be nice to go back to your old property & do a update on these oak leaf hydrangeas. They are by far one of my favorites.

Love Oakleaf Hydrangeas! I lost a huge one to a severe drought 2 years ago. Bought another one and put it in more shade. I am seeing some wooly aphids on the new one but they don't seem to be hurting it any.

I was curious about these. Thanks for the video even though I believe I will pass on these. I'm not a fan of pink blooms. Great video as usual

I love them. I planted 6 from the Gatsby series last year, 2 each of 3 varieties. Deer munched them badly before i got them planted behind deer netting. They are struggling. They are in too much shade and, like i mentioned, got a bad start due to deer. Have a new one, Alice, that i havent planted yet. Trying to decide how to protect her and still give her enough sun.

I'm in western Washington (South Puget Sound area, zone 8B) and the local deer have munched on my Oakleaf Hydrangea, if a leaf was open - it was gone. Resistance was futile.

Hi Jim, Sometimes if you want something expensive, save and save to get it you just have bite the bullet and get it. I bought Gatsby Girl and Gatsby Ruby oak leaf hydrangeas in 3 gal pots having sat outside since late last April. I'm in zone 5. They are large, GIrl is over two feet, Ruby near that and just starting to get red on a few leaves. It is Sept 23rd. I have poor soil that has to be amended. I bought fine to medium pine mulch and Holly Tone. I have from other gardening peat moss, composted manure, compost for mushrooms, and some pretty decent bagged soil that has worm castings. What do I use and how do I transplant these oak leaf hydrangeas?

Is your soil clay? Is it acidic? Just poor doesn't tell me enough really. The pine bark is usually what they are grown in and that would be good mixed in. I don't fertilize this time of year. The Holly tone in March would be perfect.

Back in the late 1800s my area was swampy pot holes. Over the years the swampy holes were filled with some clay. river rocks and silt. Over the years precious owners just let nature take its course. The silt has long since lost its vitality - the only thing that grows well unless the soil is amended are dandelions. I amended two patches on the east side of the house to make two Iris beds. I want to landscape the front facing north with east and west sides of the front yard that has a huge Norway Maple and an old airy silver maple that will provide dappled shade most of the day. I'm putting in rhododendrons, a couple of azaleas and hosta in curving areas with mulch on all four sides of the front yard and a small center area for a dogwood tree. The whole are is 56 feet by 56 feet.

I am wondering about planting an oakleaf in a bed in front of house that gets full afternoon sun. Do you think that can work? Is there an oakleaf hydrangea that does best in full sun?

@@southbridgeforestHOA A guy at our local nursery told us we probably wouldn't like the results of an oakleaf in full afternoon sun. We decided to do limelight prime in the middle of the bed & little lime punch on both sides. I hope they bloom next month.

The Hydrangea quercifolia 'Munchkin' plants I'm seeing at nurseries don't look like the plant in this video. The ones I'm seeing on the market are more compact with smaller, darker leaves. Are you sure the featured plant in this video is a Munchkin?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 4 жыл бұрын
It could have something to do with how much shade they were getting in the nursery.

@@JimPutnam Thanks. I wish I could share a photo I took of two munchkins side by side at a local nursery. They look like two different oakleaves. Not even close in terms of form and leaf size, texture, color and shape.
