I think it is important to remember that kids efforts at any task may not be “perfect” but with gentle guidance they get better. I think it is also important to be open to learning from your kids. My favorite example is folding laundry. Folding shirts can be challenging. My son started folding shirts in a way that was easier for him. I quickly saw the advantages of his technique and changed my practices. 35 years later I’m still folding shirts the way my son taught me.

That moment when Ben asked "are these helpful bugs?" and brought over the bugs, gently holding onto them with curiosity. So many kids would have simply killed them without a thought, or avoided them. But no, Ben picked them up and asked about them. This is when I know the world just may end up in good hands after we've done our darned best to ruin the planet. Children like Ben will steward this world far better than we have up 'til this point. It's a happy thought, at least for me.

I was reading a book to my son the other night and it made me think of Ben .. “The Boy Who Watered the World” .. my son is currently 3 and oh how my heart hopes he enjoys gardening with me as much as Ben does with you. My youngest is also 6, and whilst it takes much longer to plant, she gets so much joy and knowledge, and I get the warm fuzzies in my heart from seeing her joy and the time we spent together. Benjamin is such a little gardener and you can tell that he really loves to help you in the garden. I remember when I was little it was my dad and me that were in the garden either planting, watering or weeding behind the garage as it got the southern exposure. I still love gardening.

We have to take time to teach and help kids develop an interest in gardening or else we will end up with a society that couldn’t grow their own food. I commend you and I do the same thing with my grandson. He loves it just like Ben. I was taught by my Mama and Daddy and it gives me great pleasure to pass that on.

I’ve been planting with a 2 & 6 year old this year. It’s such a blessing to have my daughter’s family on the property with us. The 2 yo is my gardener. She eats yellow sunburst tomatoes, peas & green beans right off the vine. We shared her first tomato sandwich & she made fried green tomatoes with me. My daughter & I are trying lettuces under a freeze cloth in our tin garden bed this year. I think we should throw in some colorful carrots! Blessings!!!

I found you originally because I was looking for an Arkansas gardener to follow so I'd have someone with the same general climate/growing conditions as me. A little tip I learned about planting carrots is to put the seeds in a container with a little sand and mix. Because the sand is white you can see exactly where you are casting them evenly AND the sand thins the seeds so you won't have to thin as much when they come up.
