It is a stunning attention to detail project @halfsvrarcade gorgeous !!!! I would love to see it as a stand-alone Quest 3 app just to see what you could pull off with the unreal engine on there 😊 The only thing I have seen similar which is also brilliant is ‘Age of Joy’ which is a Quest 2/3 arcade app found via Sidequest. It would be brilliant if you could do a collaboration with Curif (the developer) honing in on both of your skills and love of Arcades 😊. You could share assets and ideas 😊

Does it work without touch controllers? I have an Oculus Rift CV1 with no touch controllers. Can I hop in with my Rift and just use an Xbox controller or a HORI 8 button arcade stick? Or does it require touch controllers? Maybe my sim racing direct force feedback wheel and Hshifter for racing games like Ferrari F355 Challenge? Also, does it have support for shaders, like can I drop in my favorite slang shader preset from Retroarch for example?
@SpaciesArcade
@SpaciesArcade 8 ай бұрын
@@DerekMoore82 At the moment you need to navigate with VR controllers. You can then use any mame compatible controller to play a game. There isn't currently any support for dropping in shaders. It does natively already do scanline generation (I'm guessing through the inbuilt mame core) but no advanced shaders.

Why a company like Sega (with its catalog of classics that could fill an arcade on their own) hasn't done something like this is just proof of the lack of vision with some of these older companies.

Not really a lack of vision at all. Just a lack of knowing how to monetize it, or it’d be done.
@JaimeMargary
@JaimeMargary 8 ай бұрын
@@b4ds33d Sega has been monetizing collections for ages. The difference here is the hub. The games already exist - the only "game" they'd have to create would be a 3D space resembling an 80's arcade that you can travel and interact with in a VR space. That 3D space would be a recreation of an environment many of Sega's old fans wish they could revisit. Much less development time than an average game, updateable, much more buzz-worthy and a solid reminder of their legacy. "Best we can do is another Sonic game."

How one person created this is just unbelievable. I had no interest in VR but having seen this and pinball recently I think I need a headset! Many of my favourites there. Over time hopefully we will see them added. I really do think that any future cab additions will be like receiving them into your personal collection! With patience we can hope for these to eventually occur but we must respect the developer's time here and just enjoy any new additions at his own pace and desire. As for getting a headset, it really is time with VPX/PinballFX and now Time Capsule giving us these glorious experiences in VR! I hope you manage to get one! Cheers

I love it. Tried it myself, and was blown away. This guy deserves all the praise. Good to know that he's working on smooth movement, that would add to the immersion level, and allow you to walk around the arcade, rather than hop around. Would love to see floor levels based on period, such as an early 80s-only level, mid 80s level, late 80s level, early 90s, even a 70s level. But that is something for the future, perhaps. And for much later, perhaps a few fruit machines, pinball machines, money change machines, etc... Some lighting presets, such as morning, noon, late evening, night - with some atmospheric night lighting. More outside options - Seaside, Town, etc... Infact, imagine the outside could also be a huge attract video ? People walking past, cars driving past, a seaside atmosphere - the options are mind-blowing.

I played around with this for about an hour last night and was blown away. I spent most of the time just walking around watching the demos. But it took me a few minutes and a visit to the Google doc to realize I needed a gamepad to play, which was a bit disappointing. I understand some of these games with more buttons will require one, but so many could be played with the 4 buttons on the right Quest controller and the analog stick on the left one. I really hope that's something the dev is considering adding in the future. The doc also says that Virtual Desktop isn't recommended at the moment, but I'm playing on a Quest 3 with a Wifi 6 router and it's smooth as butter, so no issues there if you've got the hardware to do it.
@SpaciesArcade
@SpaciesArcade 8 ай бұрын
He might add support for that at some point but it may be tricky as you need to distinguish between game input and moving around which you can still do while playing. Additionally, to make this the most realistic experience the ability to swap in any mame compatible controller is golden as you can have the proper feel of the controls and play them like you did back in the 80's/90's. So yeah, I'm all for keeping the additional arcade controller hardware but appreciate also that some people may want to play a bit more casually.... Thanks for your thoughts and sharing your experience with the Virtual Desktop - that may help others! Cheers 👍

For more realism, you need very loud music that drowns out the sound of the games, faded monitors, screen burn ins, broken controls, and a portion of games out of order. I was at a real arcade yesterday that was in town, and it wasn't as awesome as the VR. Instead, it gave me a reality check on what it was really like back in the 80s. It's just been so long for me. I'm definitely going to check this out. It would be neat if pinball machines were mixed in using VPX.

I don't have a VR system, never wanted to try it until now. I'm going to keep an eye on this and I might get a VR system down the road. Would be neat to be able to customize the arcade. Change the floor, walls, and ceilings. be able to change the lighting, like give it the blacklight effect, etc. Plus being able to change posters to your own stuff ;)

Something i would like seen done with the VR arcade is the ability to walk up to the machine and use the appropriate joystick and button layout for each machine to really up the immersion.
@SpaciesArcade
@SpaciesArcade 8 ай бұрын
Well you could get close to this already given you can use multiple arcade controllers with this now and remap the controls to suit the layouts. The limitation would be how many you could feasibly have, but you can cater for most with an accurate arcade feel with just one solid six button arcade controller. But I do know what you mean.... I have to say that my first impression is that this is going to be a fantastic product, though currently quite buggy and needs more configuration and mobility options to make it fully practical. The biggest "hole" in playing virtual machines in VR is the controller (I'm somewhat fanatical about making sure the controls on my physical arcade machine are as close to the originals as possible); but there is definitely something about the sheer immersiveness of being "in" an arcade playing an accurately rendered cabinet that makes up for this in many ways--and the author is clearly going out of his way to make these machines look authentic! I just did a comparison of playing 1942 on my physical arcade machine vs. playing it in the Time Capsule VR environment and with the exception of having to use a gamepad, I'd have to honestly say that I preferred the VR environment. With my Pimax Crystal and a 1390K/4090 PC, the resolution is so high that there is effectively no loss in game field clarity compared with the physical machine, and the way that the CRT is re-created feels strangely real and "correct" (and way, way, better than the old NewRetroArcade: Neon ever was). Some games crash the environment, and many--particularly those with strong blue elements in the playfield--create a layered look where the blue parts of the playfield appear recessed in the field (in Pac-Man, the yellow dots hover over the playfield). I'm not sure whether its something particular about my headset or something correctable in the game (closing one eye makes the effect go away), but it is something that will need to be addressed one way or another before I'll be able to play these particular games happily. In general though, this is an amazing effort with my congratulations to the author. Both the machines and the environments--while clearly a work-in-progress--add an atmosphere that evokes sheer nostalgia and really does work! No, this won't be replacing my physical multi-arcade machine, but I can see myself playing them 50/50--and perhaps VR even more as this thing matures.

You can play this with your own arcade stick controller.
@daviddahlstrom192
@daviddahlstrom192 8 ай бұрын
@@GhostLyricist Yes, I'm aware of that. My comment about the gamepad was more incidental rather than a criticism to indicate that my comparison had some compromises (because my arcade machine is in a different room than the VR rig, I couldn't use my arcade controls for TC). For both this and VPX, I'll probably eventually build or buy a pinsim with arcade controls for the VR Room to get the best of both worlds.

I don’t know what difference in quality there would be, but being compatible with Age of Joy cabinets could be something to explore with that team - having cabinets that can be used across both seems like it could work well as an option for those that have specific cabs and not reliant on the devs?
@SpaciesArcade
@SpaciesArcade 8 ай бұрын
Halfdeck is going to great lengths to make this the most authentic and realistic experience. The cabs in Age of Joy are no where near to this standard and he has spent countless hours perfecting each of his so unlikely to see those offered over to Age of Joy or anywhere else. Given this is free it makes sense to jump in on it and hopefully over time there will be some similar Age of joy functionality added (such as other people in the arcade etc)- however the project is very much taking it's own independent path and not being driven by other similar experiences. cheers.

I think this is modelled off of the Neon Retro Arcade. If the guy who made this is doing LA area arcades, it would be awesome to see the (long closed) Pak Mann and College (LACC) arcades. An older representation of Family Arcade as it was back in the late 80s/early 90s would be really cool too. This is the first application of VR that I've seen in the past 40 years that actually makes me consider buying a proper headset. I wonder if I could get this working with a Cardboard headset just to try it out. Very cool.
@SpaciesArcade
@SpaciesArcade 8 ай бұрын
Yes the Pasadena level is modelled after that arcade. There isn't any plans to model other arcades at this point as the project is in it's very early development cycle and that may not be a goal of the developer. Ideas like this though can be submitted on his Discord forum under #suggestions. It won't work with a cardboard headset as this is a PCVR game and must be run on a windows PC although you can tether via wire or air on the quest 2/3. But you can't sideload. Cheers
@Wren1
@Wren1 8 ай бұрын
@@SpaciesArcade Obviously I didn't mean immediately, but perhaps in the future. As for Cardboard, I'm sure I could get it running via Moonlight. I've done this with other games and I've even gotten non-VR stuff working with a combination of Moonlight and some old VR driver that I can't recall the name of. Nowadays there appear to be many applications to make either VR games for other headsets or non-VR games playable via Cardboard, such as TrinusVR, VRidge, Intugame VR, iVRy, etc. and the old Sony Xperia that I use for piloting my drone is more than capable, specs-wise. If I do buy a standalone headset, I'll have to shop around to find one that respects privacy/security (ie. does not require registration, an account, phoning home, telemetry/spyware, etc) and that works well with Linux and/or Wine, since I completely dumped Windows ages ago. As a system/network administrator, security and stability are my first priorities and from what I can ascertain, none of the Facebook/Meta products meet my security criteria.

Yep hoping there can be Pinball Machines put in at some point. I have always been a pinball guy when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s I would play pinball as I thought well I can play video games at home so rarely played any of the arcade upright games. I have about 10 pinball machines in my home. I just made a background track using my newest pinball machine Police Force. You can hear the track in my most recent video where I show off my early release police force and placing the later art onto my PF cab. And yeah I know it is not easy trying to get things right in VR as I have a Pinball Museum in VRChat that I keep re-doing the world as I am not happy with how it has turned out. And the pins I have in that world are not playable and the skins on the cabs are off. And the VRCadet I have in there is broken too. I do have a bunch of my real pinball machine photos up in the world but re-doing that in the new world as well. And for me at least owning these machines and repairing them is the whole experiance. I keep waiting for an arcade game that will have a game randomly bug out and have to take it apart and clean the 40 years of dust off of it and find out what is wrong with it. Granted you will need a manual for repairing it but that would be fun I think. And those that do not want the repair the games option can turn it off. I know that would make it much more intensive on the developers side but that would be so neat to have in a VR Arcade game. :)
