I was one of those people who learned to crochet from my grandmother. I began at the age of 5 and have been crocheting off and on ever since. I am now well over 70 years old, and I can assure you that your instructional videos are as valid for me as they are for my granddaughter, who is a beginner. There have been a multitude of new techniques, methods and stitches developed over the last 70 years, and if you want to improve, you make it a point to never stop learning. I’m 65. Been crocheting since I was 15. I always used to wind my skeins into balls. As I began viewing crocheters on KZbin, I saw the various different ways they disbursed the yarn from the skein so I tried them. But I went back to pre-winding my hanks/skeins/ into balls. For me, old school is best. 😊

Thank you, many of these I knew, some I didn't. Totally agree to keep on sharing for new people arriving all the time. Looking forward to the next video like this! One trick I use for center pull balls is to cut up hose or knee socks into sections and put the ball inside. It provides enough compression to keep the ball solid and it doesn't collapse and get tangled inside. (I learned this long ago, I forget who from)

After searching online for ideas I found that a plastic drink pitcher works great as an alternative yarn bowl. I needed something enclosed to protect the yarn from my pets while crocheting in bed. It's super easy to just throw the entire skein in the pitcher, thread the yarn through the spout, and pop the lid on!

TY for mentioning to NOT wind yarn balls too tightly... I recently received a large amount of yarn from someone who had balled up a bunch of it, VERY tightly. I just re-homed it right away. re: the cheese ball container. I have something similar. I believe that it was a protein powder container. One of the really big ones. My Hubby drilled a large hole for me in the lid so that the yarn slides easily through it. And it holds those big balls of yarn too - yay! Much much better than those yarn totes/bags. Ooooo! I'm going to try splitting the plys to hide my ends too! I normally do the 3 times rule as the crocheted fabric rarely gets pulled in 3 directions at the same time. Recently, I was using a Caron bonus bundle cake, which is huge when it started to collapse a bit on me. I knew what mess might be coming so I took a large ball of yarn that I had laying around and just plopped it down in the middle, the big middle of the cake And continued on without a collapse problem. I have large balls of yarn usually in a basket next to me to use for practice stitches when I’m watching videos for new things.

In regards to knots coming undone...I make knots like you then I put a small dot of Fray Check or a similar product on the knot. It is used to keep fabric edges from fraying. A tiny dot of the clear liquid on the knot and it is NOT coming out. As long as you don't saturate the knot, it is undetetectable. When I open a new bottle I use a medium size needle to make a hole so that small drops come out. If you cut it with scissors the product will flow too quickly.

I was excited about the joining of yarns, but for me, I couldn’t get the trick of knotless- threading one yarn through the other yarn, to work for the types of yarn I use. So I am just back to knots, and pulling as hard as I can until I am happy it is secure. One trick I am so glad I did not see you use for hiding the ends, is to use super glue! YES! One very popular channel, actually says to use super glue on the ends of the yarn to keep them from popping out! She even does this on baby blankets! I have never been so horrified! I use many of the methods you have included. I use a yarn bowl, and I also have a large snack container that I use. Sometimes I use the yarn straight from the skein, sometimes I roll my yarn into balls. When I roll into balls, I find it a relaxing chore.
@PlayHookywithMe Жыл бұрын
Rolling the balls can be very relaxing, I agree. Can you share with me why you were horrified by the superglue ? Is it because of the fumes , the type of glue or just the fact that she used glue? I’m asking only because I know many like to use glue (fabric fusion and gray check) so I’m just wanting to understand your thoughts on this in case it’s something I can share in a future video . 💕
@cyann410 Жыл бұрын
@@PlayHookywithMe glue dries hard, for one thing, and secondly, glue is somewhat toxic. And this creator was making baby blankets. Over time the babies and young children will suck or chew on their blankets. I don’t think it should be used with children. But that is just my opinion.

Always appreciate your tips! Here’s something fun for all those balls of yarn, I make a two strand granny (5 rows) with a 9mm hook. Start with 2 colors ( variegated yarns are awesome too) and then switch colors anywhere with a magic knot. The results look like a quilt. Start and stop colors anywhere. I make 20 squares 5 x 4 squares. Attach them with a single strand single crochet. This frames the sq nicely. Add a double strand border for a couple rows and end with your picot. 😮 I start with a chain 5 for the circle. Hardly any ends to sew in and looks amazing! Made these for family and friends. ❤️

I come from a long line of knitters. I was taught to never snip tails close to the knot. No matter how tight you may get the knot, it will loosen with use over time and become a hole. Then there's not enough yarn to re-tie and fix the problem. Another tip - add 5-6 inches of yarn to one end of your project and weave in. If you ever need a bit to fix a snag or hole, you have a little extra right there.

I crocheted myself some "jars" like that a few years back and put them on Etsy, but no one bought them, so I took those down (and eventually closed the account). They aren't heavy like that jar, but they're nice 'cause I can put them between my lower legs and crochet or knit away, then stuff my projects in them! They have little crocheted "ribbons" woven into them, so I use those to tie them off at the top. I could put bags of marbles or decorative rocks or something heavier in the bottoms to weigh them down if I needed to. Also, keep kitty away from all yarn or stringy-things. They swallow them, the barbs on their tongues push everything down their throats, and then the yarn gets stuck in their guts, then it pulls them into tight knots so their intestines can't work. Usually, even with surgery, they die after this happens. I disagree about washing and drying these things, ever, really. It ruins the sheen on a piece. I'd only do that if that bridge has already been crossed anyway.
@PlayHookywithMe Жыл бұрын
I’m sorry they didn’t sell well for you, what a bummer. This jar was super lightweight as well , just plastic. I’ve seen where you can buy jar shaped yarn holders with a little opening at the top but I love being able to just reuse common items 👏🏻💕 great idea on weighing down the bottom of the jug if necessary !

@@PlayHookywithMe Thanks. Yeah, it was really disappointing. I don't think I did what I should have for communicating what they were/how they worked, and this was way before hooking took over a large % of social media too, so there wasn't much of a "buzz" market. Anyway, I wound up disliking the way they do things at Etsy enough that I closed my account and don't want to go back there. I'm working on building a website right now, I can do a lot more that way (I'm doing it on my own home server, nothing's live at this point), so I can add those in there when I'm ready. I think I do understand social media marketing a bit better now than before, so maybe in the future, it'll work out better. 😄 I like your tips - thanks for posting them! I especially like how you're helping to keep this thing going down the generations, with newcomers always coming in. This is one of the main reasons why I love the crochet community - there's no (what the kids call now) 'gatekeeping'. New ideas/tips/stitches get disseminated quickly, like a drop of food coloring into a glass of hot water. Tons of "welcome, let's get you up to speed" with no "learn the hard way like we experts did". I'm sure there are people like that out there, but I've never bumped into 'em (thank goodness).

I like all the tips but my favorites are the yarn ball in a large empty container & the use of a bobby pin or hair clips to hold the yarn tail in place🌞
