@@deirdremudge6802 okay great. The chain will depend on how long you want to make your blanket so I would recommend you chain up to 50 and see if it reaches the width you want. If not, make more until you do. I can’t give you a specific number because it varies depending on the yarn and hook size you’re using. After you’ve decided on your chain count then you’ll add extra chains to help start that first row of stitches. For example, let’s say you start with a chain 50 . You’ll add 1 more chain (giving you 51) to make a single crochet, 2 more for a double crochet (52) or 3 more a treble crochet (53). Most likely you’ll start your first row with a single or double crochet. The process will be exactly the same even if you start with a 100 or 150 chains. I would recommend you find a simple pattern and see what chain count they recommend. But remember the hook and yarn size are important. 💕

One thing that I do for double, treble, etc is instead of chaining, because I don’t like the look, I chain one and pull the loop up to about 2/3 of the stitch height and yarn over the number of times needed and do the stitch normally And instead of slip stitches with double and larger, I go until I have 2 loops on my hook, and then go through the next stitch and pull through all 3 loops. I know most don’t do this, but it make a very discrete loop that you don’t typically get

For us, South Paws, don't let charts deter you. Simply take a photo & reverse it. "Back in the day" I would hold the pattern up to a mirror or turn the page & put it up to the light to see the reverse image. Now we have cell phones! I feel as old as a dinosaur 🦕. Hello Roz what an awesome lesson today .just like you I love to crochet and knit and I learned these 2 crafts in junior school . Over the years and prior to covid I was teaching seniors & afterschool kids these crafts . However ; there's always something new to learn each day . Just like you I shorten the stitches at the end so as to close the gap & so forth to create a neat side . Ps : I see you have the book 200 crochet blocks . Reading patterns. I’m dyslexic and so text patterns can be a challenge. I do fine if I have symbols in a column like in a long addition problem. So, after my first pattern read through I rewrite that pattern in a column for each row. Then to work, I use both versions. To keep up with where I am in the dense txt for the row, I use sticky flags and move from stitch to stitch as I crochet. Of course, as soon as I have memorized the rows all goes fast. That slow deliberate establishment of the first rows is, however, crucial to my being able to work the text pattern. Interestingly, the symbol patterns present no such problem. They are easy to work and I’m so glad someone thought to create them.

Howdy! What a fantastic video! I’ve been crocheting about 15 years and the only thing you didn’t cover is vertical gauge. That confused me for a solid year as a newbie! There was lots of info about how to adjust horizontal stitches/gauge by changing hooks but I could never find anything on how to adjust stitch height. Of course, that was before YT crochet videos were really a thing, so I’m sure there’s more info out there now! (And for those of you with this Q: try altering your tension and how much you tug on your stitches. If you’re tugging too much as you finish each stitch, you’ll get short squat stitches (which is what you want if you’re making amigurumi!). And vice versa: if you’re not pulling at all as you finish, you’ll have tall floppy stitches!) Happy Christmas!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I am a new crocheter too. My question is when the pattern says at the end of the row go into the top of the chain does it matter where you put your hook? Into the top of the “v” which is sometimes not easily visible or can you also go into the side of the chain? I hope that makes sense, thank you again!

It can be tricky at times, yes. But that’s right, you want to put your hook under the v shape that you see at the top of the stitch ( when it’s a sc, hdc, dc etc). If it’s a chain , you’ll place your hook through the chain and it will Look like one loop over your hook instead of a v. When it’s very hard to see, just do your best to get it in the general vicinity of where it should go . Your goal here is to make sure that you are keeping your stitch count accurate. 👍🏻 The more you do it and the more videos you watch , you’ll start seeing what it should look like. Hi ! Yes , I use the magic knot to add a new skein of yarn if I run out while I’m crocheting . When I’m joining new colors on the sides I just use a regular double knot but also keep the tails to weave in . I don’t cut close to the knot on a double knot. It will come out. If you’re in doubt , I would recommend that you create your knot but also keep a long tail to weave in after. That way you’ll feel confident that it’s not going to come out. I mean for any of the knots you choose. 💕

No , put it in the chain right under it. Just remember that the loop on the hook never counts as a stitch. 💕

BOTH 😀turning like the page of a book is the method that is taught because it puts your working yarn in the back to continue on with the next row . But it really doesn’t affect the look of your work if you don’t. I often don’t turn like the page of the book … I never knew there was a right way to do it when I learned . So really I’d say do what feels best for you too. Turning like a book is a good habit to get into but if you don’t , the crochet police won’t come looking for you. 🧶💕

I am hoping this community an help me. Sorry for the long post, but it cannot be avoided. I am a good crocheter, so I have the "basics" down, but I would like input on something. I am a "Pear Shaped" woman, so EVERY crochet pattern out there for tops, dresses, etc. go by your "bust size". Well for us pear shaped women, we must also take into consideration our LARGER HIP size. I want to make an "Empire Waist" top where I do NOT have to increase stitches to enlarge the bottom half of the top to fit my hips. Does anyone know how to make the TOP HALF piece (meaning from just below the bustline up to the shoulders) in one stitch, THEN WITHTOUT CHANGING HOOK SIZE OR INCREASING STITCH COUNT FOR THE BOTTOM HALF - LARGER? Would it work if I use two different types of stitches that naturally come out one larger than the other just because of the way the stitch is done? For example....a Moss Stitch (aka: Granite Stitch) will come out measuring less wide than Single Crochet - even when using the SAME SIZE HOOK AND STITCH COUNT. Are there other stitches that can be used (one for the top part of the top, then the other stitch for the bottom half of the top) - that would automatically be different in width over the same number of stitches using the same size hook for both? I hope I made sense. Thanks for any helpful input.

Many times the hook will also say the number along with the letter but you can easily Google the conversion online. Or visit the craft yarn council of America in the standards section: www.craftyarncouncil.com/standards/hooks-and-needles

Yarn types. Acrylic may be safe in washer and dryer but remember acrylic is plastic fibers. It does not decompose but breaks down into Mico pieces of plastic that gets in their and in your lungs and it gets in the water systems to the Oceans and into the seafood/fish you ingest. Animals eat the indigestible plastic and it stays in their stomach filling it and they die. Please do not use acrylic yarn. Where do b you think the lint and the object goes at end of its useful life? Probably washing up on a coast halfvway around the world as obscene garbage.

I complete my chain for a certain length, but when I begin the actual pattern it’s not uncommon for the length to shrink. Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong? I feel like my tension isn’t the problem.

No, it doesn’t sounds like you’re doing something wrong. It could just be the pattern itself. Don’t forget , that the turning chain to start the row shortens the row immediately and then if it’s something like a wave or chevron it will shorten it even more. If you are noticing that the first row is arching up like a rainbow then the best solution is to go up a half or full hook size when you do your chain. It makes a world of difference. For example , in my most recent video , I did my chain with a 4mm but for my stitches I used a 3.5 mm. Hope one of these answers helped 💕
