here's the problem with sony there way isn't working and xbox's is. sony got to comfortable and lazy relying on there success of the last gen consoles and games and didn't want to change. But now xbox is getting there shit together and has the upper hand with the acta/bliz deal and GPU and there's the problem 4 sonny "GPU". Phil spencer said that cod was staying on the sony side and i say good move y cut all that sweet money of the books. And that my gaming Friends is the REAL problem 4 sony. they can't compete with xbox's GPU 11 pounds a month as apposed to paying 70 plus dollars on the ps5 while it's like a no brainer for any game on any console pay 70 dollars on ps5 or what feels like free on GPU. What sony is now realising is xbox isn't fcuking about any more sony needs to CHANGE and stop trying to rip people of. The casual gamers who only play the big annual titles like CoD, FIFA, Madden, etc., they choose the console based on where their friends play and who also has the biggest player base. For CoD, PlayStation has the biggest player base followed by PC, and then Xbox, ironically. This segment of gamers is actually bigger than the ones who specifically choose a console based on an exclusive game/franchise because the annual games are all mutliplat. This is the underlying cause why Sony is so scared (and being hypocritical). Imagine if Xbox puts CoD on Game Pass in the next few years even while allowing it on PlayStation? Where do you think the majority of the player base and its content creators are going to migrate to? Will they stay with a $70 annual title, or play the same game with a possibly larger player base for $15 a month?

Thats why I dislike Sony for a long time now... They are console market leader for YEARS and continue to be anti-consumer up to this date, the list of absurds they put up these past years is ridiculous, from charged next gen updates, downplaying game pass day 1 releases, against cross play, hard time on idies charging a fortne to promote their games, etc... Its just pathetic pretend to be victim now, they have had the largest revenue and market lead through over a decade but choose the "Maximum profit, minimum effort" model. Just look at the start of this generation, Sony didnt bring anything new but a new controller and increased price tag, while XBoX has been working for years to bring Smart Delivery, Quick Resume, Backwards compatibility, FPS boost, Auto HDR, Game Pass, xCloud (constantly expanding), VRR (for many years), etc.. Sony is only moving their asses now because they are being forced to catch up with the competition, or else they would do nothing for their costumers.

Yeah the $10 upcharge to upgrade Sony exclusives is just ridiculous and as you said, consistent blackballing of cross play. On top of that, they refused to do backwards compatibility and even scoffed at the idea until Microsoft showed them up. Now they wanna charge extra for PS+ in order to get access to those "old games" Sony made fun of Xbox gamers wanting. It's just a bad look. But this is typical Sony. Anytime they're comfortably at the top, they start their bs. I remember they did this with the PS3, trying to cut vibration on the controllers and calling it outdated. Then gamers gravitated toward the Xbox 360's controller and Sony backpedaled. I'm not sayin Xbox is great. They have a ton of flaws, but over the last like 6-7 years, I've seen MS try way harder to give gamers value while Sony price gouges and removes features until they remove way too much and it backfires on them.

My main takeaway is that the people at Sony are throwing things at a wall and being wildly hypocritical in the process. They are griping about competitive disadvantages from the Activision acquisition while simultaneously making acquisitions themselves (Bungie) as a company with a larger market share in the gaming industry. Furthermore, this idea that somehow its suddenly a problem for games that were previously multiplat to be exclusive coming from Sony is a joke. They pay 3rd party developers just to not put their product on the xbox....How is that not a problem using their logic? Lastly, they aren't even making a claim of unfair exclusivity here because Microsoft agreed to continue producing COD for Playstation. The issue has to do with the competitive advantages of being able to put the game on gamepass. I'm sorry, but as I recall Destiny 2 was on gamepass for a long time, and Bungie conspicuously decided to remove the game weeks before the Sony acquisition announcement was made. Now by that same logic are we to assume Sony shouldn't be allowed to put Destiny 2 on their subscription service? Of course not!

The entire statement reflects the main issue with Sony's PS4 strategy. Don't get me wrong, they released some good games, but they didn't have one owned studio looking into a strong AAA Multiplayer game, incase they lost COD marketing rights. They pivoted their strategy too late, and now they've had to buy Bungie for some expertise in FPS and especially Live Services. They also have numerous Multiplayer projects in production now, but they spent so long on only Single player games, that they're studios may not have the deepest skillset yet. Exciting times. We'll have to see how this goes 🙂

As a Brazilian, I have to say that subscription is the only financially viable option for us. A YEAR of Ps plus extra is cheaper than buying ONE game on day one. Games are so expensive here. I have gamepass and ps plus. They're both amazing.

Sony is projecting. It is not that the industry can't compete against COD. It is that SONY can't compete against COD. Only Halo has been able to have such an industry-wide pull. Remember when Halo 3 was so big, it impacted the box office and sales of goods and services across America. Sony has never had a product with that kind of pull. They have been trying to create their own "Halo killer" with Killzone for years to varying results. Killzone never became a game that encourages console sales or made a cultural impact the way Halo has. So since the PS4 generation, They stopped chasing the FPS AND multiplayer niche. They focused on the only thing that worked for them, Third-person, single-player games with QuickTime events and light platforming and puzzles. Their purchase of Bungie was their way to gain some kind of ground in the sphere, finally. They bought the company that made the game that made the FPS genre including COD as big as it is today. But Microsoft owning Halo, Doom, Quake and now COD would forever establish the Xbox as THE fps box and THE multiplayer console. even now, when people talk multiplayer, we think Xbox Live and Steam, not so much PSN.

Your analysis is on point, here’s mine. Of course they look weak, but that doesn’t mean they are wrong. Sony’s problem is more about manpower available right now in the gaming industry and infrastructures. Can Sony make their own COD? Absolutely not, here’s why. What is COD in 2022? Cod is way more than a AAA fps, cod is a brand recognized all over the world. Even non gamers, or my 82 years old grandma heard about Call of Duty, and it took 19 years for Activison to get to that point. Cod is now a brand that can sell not only video games, but t-shirts, toys, figurines, books, movies, series etc… That’s why Sony is saying that it takes multiple hundreds of millions of dollars to compete against cod, but also a studio or multiple studios with thousands of employees, which they don’t have right now, and they just won’t have in the coming years because all of their studios are busy working on something else. Sony estimated that around 2500-3000 Activision’s employees are working on the cod brand full time. When Microsoft bought Activision, they acquired multiple great IP’s, but they also acquired a huge workforce. There’s a huge shortage of manpower in the video game industry right now in Canada, US and the EU, pretty much all studios are hiring, but everybody already have a job. Sony can’t just open a new studio and hire thousands of 3D artists, programmer, map designers etc to compete against Activision’s studios already working on the cod brand. Furthermore, Sony doesn’t have an exclusive AAA fps with single AND multiplayer implemented in each iteration like Microsoft does with Halo and now cod. Another very important point, American and European gamers are hungry for arcadish "military type" first person shooters, which is exactly what cod is. For years Sony relied on Activision instead of making their own exclusive AAA military fps… big mistake. Lastly, just think about the infrastructures needed to run all of cod’s multiplayer, Warzone on consoles and pc, cod mobile, all the multiplayer modes from all the standalone cod still active, it’s f-ing huge!!! Activision owns that kind of infrastructures, and it’s been 19 years in the making. Sony doesn’t own anything near this for one of their exclusive brand.

CoD wiped the floor with the competition not because of its resources, but because it was a great franchise at the time. The barrier to entry for Sony is effort, not resources.

Battlefield 2042 doesn’t even have a campaign and it releases every 4-5 years if not more. 50 million players were actively playing warzone in the last 30 days. Battlefield is a joke compared to cod. I was careful not too compare Apex, tlou, Halo, overwatch (which is soon to be owned by Xbox btw) or Fortnite with cod because those games have little to nothing in common with cod, even if they have success. The only game or brand that really compares to cod is Battlefield because they are both the same genre, military-arcade-fps, which is its own market, but again, PlayStation doesn’t own Battlefield. You want me to believe that if Sony would want to create a direct competitor to cod, they would only need 25 or 100 employees, and 2-3 servers, please stop. You just said that 2000 employees were needed to make Tlou2, which is probably my favorite game of all time btw, but Tlou2 doesn’t have a multiplayer mode, and a battle royale, and a mobile game. As you probably know by now, naughty dog just announced that they are actively working on the next tlou, which will probably be released in… 3-4 years. Again, it’s nothing compared to Activision’s production capacities for cod alone. It’s Sony that estimated that around 2500-3000 Activision employees were working full time on the brand, not me. Sony doesn’t have the manpower right now, and the infrastructures to compete against everything that cod is today. As a reminder to you, Sony is using Microsoft’s infrastructures and technology (Azure data centers) for their cloud gaming and content streaming services. Like I said, cod’s the games, the brand, technologies and infrastructures have been 19 years in the making, Sony knows it, they know they fucked up by relying on Activision and EA to exist in that specific market, and they acknowledged it. That being said, of course PlayStation can make great games, they always did, I never said otherwise, but to pretend that PlayStation can create a game comparable to what cod is today in the next 4-5 years is just delusional.

They have to adapt and make moves if they want to keep up with Xbox and gamepass, although I have said personally that gamepass is a great deal now but the future is questionable. Regardless, this isn’t a good look for Sony and this generation can easily tip in favor for Xbox if they sit on it.

Sony loves to promote the narrative they are this "prestige company" making "prestige games", like they're better than everybody else. They're not. The reality is they are an anti-consumer company who took the lead last gen, but then became complacent and is now scrambling to catch up to where their competition is. Not just with finally jumping on subscription services, but desperately trying to hold onto the outdated model of tying exclusive games to specific hardware. Having exclusive content (games) that can be played anywhere on anything (phones, smart TV, tablet, Cloud, etc.) is the wave of the future. Guess who is leading that charge? The biggest thing I see how this could really bite Sony in the ass is it could negatively affect their relationship with Microsoft. This deal IS going to happen. Whether it happens this month or not until June next year it’s going to happen. Microsoft has really been ahead of the industry in trying to create a working relationship with competitors like Sony and Nintendo. After this maybe MS isn’t as inclined to play nice with Sony. Does that mean they’d take COD or Overwatch console exclusive? 2 things. Phil Spencer when talking about the Bethesda acquisition said it was about developing games for where Gamepass exist. Which means Sony can put gamepass on PlayStation. I love how Sony is no longer the big fish. For over 25 years, gamers on other consoles had to put up with Sony making exclusivity deals. Anyone remember GTA III-San Andreas? PS2 got GTA III in October 2001, but Xbox got it 2 years later. Vice City came out on PS2 in October 2002, but Xbox gamers had to wait an entire year. GTA San Andreas came out on PS2 in October 2004, but Xbox got it the following summer. That was at the peak of the GTA craze and they were coming out every year, but Sony's exclusivity deal effectively made GTA a PS2 system seller Xbox couldn't rival. Even Halo 2 didn't rival San Andreas and Halo 2 was insanely popular. Right out of the gate, the PS2 had a massive advantage over Xbox because there was no way you were gonna wait 6 months to 2 years for GTA. Before that, Sony threw its weight around to take games away from Sega gamers. It got exclusivity deals with Namco and Square so Playstation would get Tekken, Final Fantasy, Ridge Racer, which were all console sellers at the time. Sony later bought the rights to Spider-Man, made Street Fighter V a console exclusive, and they bought Insomniac, Bungie, Sucker Punch in the last decade. Keep in mind Street Fighter is the single most popular fighting game franchise. There is no actual way to rival it. Yes, I know Sony helped fund SFV, but they funded it on the condition that it be solely on PS4, which was dirty as hell. Spider Man is way more popular than even Superman and Batman... again, no way to rival or replicate him. Insomniac had actually worked with Microsoft at the onset of the Xbox One/PS4 gen, but Sony put a stop to that just a few years later. Sony jumped on Bungie when they became available and Destiny was (at the time) considered to be the successor to Halo. It didn't pan out that way, but Sony's intentions were to take a highly coveted developer for themselves... again. Now that Microsoft is throwing its weight around, Sony doesn't like that. Sony has been making underhanded deals to gain competitive advantages since the very beginning. I'm not saying it's wrong. Sony is competing. However, it is hypocritical to now whine about Microsoft playing the game too. When it was Nintendo and Sega (who could not match Sony's pockets), Sony was more than happy to throw money around.

I don't take much from this because the lawyers for Sony are supposed to say this. They are supposed to make whatever arguments they can to persuade the court to rule in a way that favors their client. They did everyone but whisper the word: "monopoly". The only reason Playstation got stronger last generation was because Microsoft was very busy with their Windows and Office 365 project (they invested around 6 years on that), they were so much focused on that. @@DestinL In terms of the mass amounts of sales for a franchise thats been around since early 2000's? I mean its like you don't look at NPD and the numbers these platform holders put out in their Quarterly reports? There is no game on a consistent basis that pulls in the money cod does every year and that includes Fortnite. They are right, no one has the reach COD has in terms of shier volume. Though Destiny has a lot of people playing it, pales in comparison to during covid where cod had 137 Million people. Warzone alone dwarfs Destiny in players.

@@DestinL There is no competition when you look at shier volume of copies sold, shier volume for Microtransactions, and revenue generated consistently "every" year. Destiny does not come out with a expansion every year, they may have a new season. But the odds of that new season generating even close to the amount a new COD does is really reaching. COD has literally outdone battlefield, and some sports games which come out every year with yearly dlc content. There is no game in the same genre that comes out "every" year that sells the way COD does. COD is literally the top selling game every year consecutively. And is one of the most played every year by a large margin. yes it has a drop off. But it also has the largest player pool of any shooter. Thats what Sony was getting at. And channels like yourself seem to not understand.

Destin I said the same thing when I read the quote the other day. Thinking “are they really saying that when they have talent like bungie unde their belt? Wow that’s a slap in the face to the developers who work there.” And it is. How can you downplay the talent that you just acquired just because you won’t have marketing deals with cod anymore. I feel the developers should really be cautious in how Sony treats them going forward know that they have shared their actual opinion on their own studios because of this merger. It’s whack and Sony needs to stop acting entitled when they could be using all that energy to start getting shit done. Great video Destin!

It takes 3000 people to make COD every year. All of sonys studio staff doesn't equal 3000 people. That's simply what Sony meant. They simply don't have the man power to attempt a yearly COD equivalent. Sony wasn't saying their studios aren't talented enough. COD is a juggernaut financially. You think with all the games in development they could press the breaks, to get all hands on deck to try and imitate COD? Xbox can't even do that. That's why they just bought Activision, the company that caught lightning in a bottle.

I think Sony should look at their KillZone IP and really dig deep into it... Im not really sweating on Microsoft acquiring cod. That game is pretty much done but I think KillZone and battlefield orrrr Maybe Armored Core could really rival this game if Sony acquired from soft and any other talented team. Sony doesn't need cod. Sony could do better... And this makes me quite sad.

Sony's comments about the status of CoD more so seems to be directed at the sales/purchase movement than the quality of the product, as well as JUST addressing the FPS genre. We've certainly seen other things on the level of quality of CoD (if not far better) in that genre, but as to if there's a FPS out there that will be able to ever move as many units as it...that's hard to imagine with the figures it gets every year. They most likely are appealing to the idea that with as many units that CoD moves, if it becomes a Game Pass Day One option, that franchise alone may be enough to shift the market almost entirely to being a subscription model and that's probably why they brought up how it can affect how much Triple A titles can put into their games not being able to start with upfront sales anymore.

PLEASE...We all know that if the shoe were on the other foot, and Sony bought Activision/Blizzard it's almost a guarantee that CoD would have gone PS exclusive. MS has already stated that CoD will remain multi-plat. Next, the subscription thing...Sony has XBox over a barrel by a long shot when it comes to games. They own some of the biggest and most revered IPs out there, gimme a break "we can't compete with GP". Yes, they could...The only thing holding them back is their own greed. They could add Day one access to their first-party games just like MS does, but they don't want to. I'm a PS+ Extra member, and if i want to play PS1 classics, i gotta give Sony even more money. When it comes down to it Sony is simply butt hurt that they won't have as big a lead over MS this gen. That's pretty much their only real gripe here.

It's just as I said for YEARS!... now Sony are Diva's. I'm a Playstation Player and even I see this as very disrespectful to developers who made them what they're today. With this type of talk this more of childish talk more than leadership talk. They don't even care about COD it's the exclusive content that is going away that pisses them off. I'm actually glad that this is happening because maybe we will see Sony get off of their high horse and actually get into the mud. They have studios that are SUPER! talented. It's not the developers fault it's your fault Sony for focusing on $100 Remasters instead of a big budget multiplayer game. 🤷🏼‍♂ 👀

@Destin I think Sony is more upset that they didn't think about buying Blizzard/Activision or trying to get exclusive rights to COD first and can't really think of a counter move. Sony has been buying exclusive rights and studios for years for the main reason they now crying about. I commend Microsoft for leveling the playing field and for pushing the gaming industry into a positive direction for everyone.

Sony knows what they're doing. Sony knows they sold a ton of PS4s just cuz of COD, I live in Nigeria and most people at least 90% of Gamers here play on PlayStation and they only play maybe 4 games, Fifa, CoD, Street fighter and MK, in that order, Fifa being the most popular. And Sony knows they cornered the CoD market with all the Exclusive things they got for players of CoD on the PS. Also with the GamePass thing is they shit on GP for years now they feel its too late for them to catch up. they are really whining cuz they can actually see that the subscription strategy is working.
