Please stop comparing homosexuality to addiction.

Someone on Twitter asked me about my response to a Christian comparing being gay with alcoholism. Here's why you shouldn't make that argument.

I just recently came out and when I did my parents asked me to go see a therapist and last week he legit made the comparison of my sexuality to alchlaholism and food addiction.

I will admit although I'm a conservative Christian I cringe every time I hear analogies like this. I do admit that they are unhelpful and it's just astonishing to me how pervasive these analogies are despite how often they fail to make the point. I freely confess that I don't really fall into either conservative or liberal sides of this topic but I do like your videos. :)

I like to try and explain it that heterosexual oriented people COULD force themselves to be with the same sex...try to have a relationship with someone they are fond of and find attractive (like I still find some men very attractive, but I am not attracted to them myself). It wouldn’t work...it would feel off, and forced, and void of an important component that we as humans long for when wanting to find a romantic companion. Or better yet, we could use sexual orientation of heterosexual should mean that any man or woman should be able to be with any other man or woman...just lined up and paired off. It doesn’t work like that because people want to choose many things about the person they pair up with, usually with the very first component being sexual attraction. It’s what gets the ball rolling toward a potential romantic union. That attraction and romance changes over time, but it is needed at the foundation. I spent 10 years with a woman I was never actually physically attracted to (I am a woman). Attraction is an important component and I found out the long and painful way that it doesn’t just develop over time because you wish for it to.
