When JJ Abrams made The Force Awakens, he may have inadvertently ruined the Future of the entire Star Wars franchise. In this video analysis I will be looking in depth at character arcs and plot development across multiple scenes, and analyzing how the seemingly rash decisions JJ made will have lasting consequences across every subsequent story line told in future films.

Umm To your force powers point, that's not how growth works. In real life, our the series. Eventually, you'll plateau or stagnate. You cannot grow, infinitely. Because of that, Luke could never stay ahead of Kylo. Because of the reason Jedi weren't allowed to have children and the reason Luke(child of a force sensitive Jedi) is so strong, Kylo was always going to be stronger. He's the child, of the child, of A Force Sensitive, that was born from the force.

@@LeAndre_McCoy I'm not at all sure what you're trying to argue by saying the grandson would naturally be more powerful than any of his family line that came before. As to your first point, yes, that's exactly how *successful* growth works. Successful people who are growing a skill set do not plateau indefinitely, they push past and continue to grow. Now you have made me realize that at a certain very advanced level the growth curve quickly becomes very linear but I do think my initial point is valid considering the growth curve we saw both Anakin and Luke take in their respective trilogies.

That in itself isn't necessarily something to be upset about, nearly every character in a popular film is a "rip-off" of another character. There's hundreds of quirky old mentor characters in stories from a hundred years ago that would also remind you of Yoda. Her being reminiscent of Yoda would be acceptable....if she were just properly developed and had actual utility to the story. As it is, cut her out and little changes other than Finn would randomly find the saber on the ground after Rey panicked and dropped it.

Depending on how detailed one’s analysis is, it is almost inevitable that minor errors of some kind will occur on the set design, timeline continuity, etc. Even Citizen Kane and various films by Stanley Kubrick (who was infamous for being an obsessive perfectionist) have a couple of goofs if one looks hard enough, such as Charles Foster Kane supposedly saying “Rosebud” and dying without anyone else being visible in the room or “The Shining” having minor continuity errors that some have even overanalyzed as extra “symbolism“. Nonetheless, as far as basic plot points and character progression go, each detail should be given some thought, as the common strategy of “Chekhov’s Gun” calls for. As a hobby, I myself have made fan outlines for my own hypothetical movies. Even I quickly got a taste for what is like, to be able to see all of one’s plot points, visual details, and character ideas mapped out to easily see how they do or do not fit together. In some ways, a filmmaker should know more about their own story than the audience, and if the audience can pick out details that go nowhere or have the easy potential for more fleshing out, then it means he/she could probably spend more time on the revisions and peer feedback stage of writing.

Something a lot of people don't know about TFA is how rushed the script was. From what was reported Michael Arndt who had primary script writing duties struggled to write a script and even suggested the movie be delayed to 2016 so he could have more time to write it and Disney shot the idea down. So J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan had to pretty much right the whole thing from scratch with less than six months to principle photography and they were still writing it well into photography. After watching TFA I felt like the script was very under cooked and when I remembered the script writing issues I realized there was a very good chance it was working off a first draft. In a couple months of thinking about the film I figured out ways to write most if not all the plot holes and contrivances. A good number of them in the third act are solved by R2. R2 can get schematics of the base allowing a heroes to know how to destroy it. He can shutdown the shields. He can free Rey. He can also find the Starkiller map instead of just having it. Seriously Kylo mentions they have the other half of the map a Chekov's gun moment making you think our heroes will find it and instead it gets forgotten and all of a sudden R2 turns back on and guess what he had it with no one knowing. I could go on and on. While nothing short of a total rewrite and change in story direction solves all of it's problems, particularly it's disjointed nature with the rest of the saga, a month, or two of polish could have made the movie internally far better put together. Also something I've seen J.J. do in each movie he directed is he does something to trigger nostalgia for a prior moment in the Original Trilogy forgetting that the context of those scenes is what makes them impactful which his copies will have non of. It's why we're back to Empire and Rebels. He's trying to relive the OT, but unwittingly undoes it. The same could be said of Han's regression as a character. His Star Wars movies are a series of nostalgia driven moments only held together by an incohesive plot. J.J. also seems to do things simply because they seem cool, or interesting. Finn was originally going to be a Bounty Hunter and he would make so much more sense as a character if that was the case, but J.J. thought it would be an interesting idea if he was a defecting Storm Trooper. The problem is that idea is only interesting if you put in the story development and legwork to do so and J.J. fails to do any of that.

Dang it, I now remember hearing the script was a mess to begin with, that was important to include. I could have highlighted how important the pre-vis process is to making sure your story flows properly, using all the examples I gave as support of that theory. 20/20 hindsight I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also they shouldn't have fired Colin Trevorrow. His version of the Sequels would have tied all the three Trilogies together. According to his script, Finn was supposed to play a major role. He was supposed to put together a crew and then discover an old, secret, defunct Seperatist/Trade Federation Droid factory. Finn was supposed to reactivate the production line, all the battle droids, the droid gunships, Vulture Droids, Droid Starfighters, etc. and then use the droid army as a backup force to fight against the First Order in Ep9. That's why a lot of new characters like Zori Bliss, Janah, etc. were introduced haphazardly in the Ep9 that we got.

I don't like how fetishized lightsabers have become. They are objects, tools and jedi are not materialistic but fans on the other hand are. Thats why we get Anakin's lightsaber suddenly becoming some important magical artifact (to milk the fans basicly) and on the fan side of things we get outrage when Luke throws the saber without giving it the same respect fans do.

I definitely agree, it was jarring to have the saber go from sacred artifact to tossed away trash. However I would say that historically lightsabers have always been extremely important. They were our first glimpse of the Jedi order in ep4, they talked about them in each film, Obi-Wan even said "this weapon is your life". I actually have the $150 replica of Maul's saber on my desk, the saber fighting in TPM is actually what made me become a fan.

@HufflepuffDaddy
@HufflepuffDaddy 2 жыл бұрын
@@DarthdYT true, the betrayal by Phasma would be akin to Hux's "I'm the Spy!" declaration that seemed way too contrived and almost comedic. It would also involve an entire plot line and make Phasma equivalent to a major character in a trilogy already with one too many to develop properly. Finn's defection is already undeveloped as is...so imo Phasma's defection would complicate matters moreso. Another solution -- I've always felt that Phasma should've been the "TR-8R" force-baton wielding stormtrooper that fought Finn outside Maz's cantina instead of another trooper with a fancy weapon. It would set up Phasma as the FO's designated traitor-hunter and made their final fight on Supremacy more spectacular. Finns's fear of the First Order may be tied to his knowledge that they actively hunt down traitors and Phasma is their "Terminator" hunting Finn...maybe all the way to the 3rd film and a spectacular final (3rd) battle. Also, Phasma as Kylo's personal bodyguard would have both of them meeting and fighting a Rey/Finn pairing. Kylo being forced to work with Phasma because Snoke doesn't trust him yet (fear of treason) would be a nice addition to the saga and I can see a Phasma vs Knights of Ren conflict (melee vs melee) or internal bickering happening because Kylo resents Phasma's looking over his shoulder. We could see Kylo's obession over Rey while Phasma has a similar motivation towards Finn. However this would add more plots and complicate matters if not pulled off well. Overall, Phasma as a secret good guy (fellow traitor) would work and I agree it would need it's own show because it adds layers of character development...but her as a ramped-up bad-ass villain (Finn's never-stopping nemesis) would work just as well with a changed scene (TR-8R) adding to her danger level. However what we saw of Phasma's character as a villain is...well...thrown into a trash compactor and rendered disposable.

So true, everything. I am so pissed off by the Force having basically become Professor X’s mutant power in the Sequels. The Emperor corrupted Ben Solo simply by talking into his head from afar for years, with NO ONE, not even the Force sensitive mother and uncle of the kid, noticing. All while being reduced to an undead zombie with limited powers. Which begs the question: why did Sidious even bother to disguise himself as Palpatine at the time of the Prequels, back when he was fully alive and at full power? According to the Sequels logic, he could’ve twisted the Republic into the Empire, destroyed the Jedi and created Darth Vader while never having to move from his secret Sith lair. P.S. I can justify the Rey vs Kylo final fight in TFA though: we’ve seen many times in the past that Force users can’t just incapacitate each other with Force “tricks” (Rey’s Force sensitivity was still inactive on Takodana, but fully active on Starkiller Base). That’s why Darth Vader, for instance, couldn’t just Force choke Luke into submission on Cloud City.

I remember a video from the time before TFA came out in which George Lucas voiced his concern that the Force might be "turned into a bunch of gobbledygook", and sadly, that´s exactly what happened. I never got the impression that the writers of the new movies were actually able to make use of the Force. Instead, they changed it into a superpower, which lets you perform all kinds of miracles. I mean, "force healing" alone completely unhinges the whole story of episodes 1-6. If only Rey (or Grogu!) would have been there when Qui-Gon Jinn died. Or when Anakin´s mother was about to die!

A lot of people say Rian Johnson "had" to make Luke cut himself off from the Force because otherwise he would've sensed Han. But that's simply untrue. If you are a writer, you can justify almost anything if you give a reasonable enough explanation. Frankly, even before going into the Last Jedi, I was anticipating that Luke was either (a) trapped on the planet and waiting for someone to rescue him or (b) waiting for a worthy student to find him so he could train them to help battle Kylo and Snoke. Luke cutting himself off was not the logical option, nor was intuitive, nor it the only option. That's one the reason why so many people were taken aback by this creative choice, because it was not obvious and Rain knew it. Cutting Luke off simply fit Rian's trend of of subverting expectations and making Luke a deadbeat, both necessary to fit into his already finished plan for the Last Jedi. The problem with Rian was that he didn't make a story that fit into the larger Star Wars universe and saga. Instead, he deliberately broke the universe to fit his singleminded vision for episode 8 with no thought as to how his film would impact the stories and character arcs of the previous films let alone how it was going to lead into Episode 9.

Interesting question. I'd guess there are multiple reasons, probably the biggest being that audiences in 2019 fully expect a huge portion of the film to be CGI, whereas back in 1999 Lucas was trying to pioneer the use of extensive CGI. In fact, the Gungan battle may have been the first extensive CGI battle ever made, so it's not at all surprising that there would be some backlash over him basically redefining the industry and the franchise in an abrupt way that fans weren't prepared for. It also didn't help that the dialogue and some plot points weren't at all up to par with the OT, inviting further criticism of the new film techniques.

Darth'd I think you meant 2015, not 2019. First of all, before The Force Awakens JJ Abrams kept talking about how they will go back to using practical effects and real sets, second of all, the practical effects was sometimes considered a highlight of TFA.

I think it is also the simple fact that the capabilities of CGI at the time of Phantom Menace were still in their infancy compared to the 2010s. As a result, the limitations in the CGI can be a lot more noticeable in the Star Wars prequels compared to modern films, when it gets overused in lieu of traditional practical effects and on-location shooting. For instance, the droid battles against the Gungans and inside Naboo have moments resembling a PS1/PS2 cutscene, which can be distracting for some. Speaking of Disney, I remember hearing that 3D computer graphics were already around in the 80’s and Disney even used some for scenes like the clocktower climax of “The Great Mouse Detective”. However, it was not until many years later that Disney/Pixar would even attempt a film where 3D computer animation carries the main narrative. “Toy Story“ was revolutionary for the time, but it too shows it age compared to modern films’ animation and mainly got away with its limitations, because the story was still great and the characters were literally toys (allowing the plastic-like appearance of the primitive 3D models to nicely fit the visual style, rather than being an obstacle, which I thought was a smart move).
@DarthdYT
@DarthdYT 4 жыл бұрын
@@markcobuzzi826 good points Mark. And as I pointed out up above, I *think* that the Droid vs Gungans battle may have been one of the first full CGI scenes ever. As you said, it looks terrible now and just moderately good back then but in addition to the aestetics not being perfected yet I'm sure there were many people balking at a new trend in filmmaking.

Well done! You made so many great points! Especially points about the force and how Rey used it and avoided using it. The force would be part of her, it would be like being born blind or deaf, she would have just adapted and done things differently her entire life. How does a blind person navigate their surroundings without sight, if you ask them they aren't creeped out or amazed by it, we are but they aren't. The only reason they would know anything different is if someone with a different frame of reference tells them about something different. For Rey growing up around aliens in relative isolation, it would be hard to imagine anyone would have a serious sit down conversation with her about things they would barely notice, unless they where intimately embedded in her life. The saber calling to Rey could be explained by the kyber crystal calling to her like it does to younglings when they go searching for a crystal. That relationship between crystal and force user is fairly well established and was explained pretty well in Rebels. SO it cOuLd be the reason, but it was never a loud clear voice or noise and didn't trigger visions. It was something that was hard for them to even tune into and took many hours sometimes days of searching. Another reason could be Snoke was poking around in her mind making her hallucinate in an effort to get her to retrieve the saber for him. But again that is all fan speculation and never dealt with in the movie. If it didn't happen in the movie, it wasn't properly dealt with. If fans have to tie up their loose ends and spend their days filling in plot holes, they dropped the ball. Anyway, thanks for the well thought out deep dive, that was great!

That scene where the gang is walking to Maz Kanata...its incredibly obvious that the dialogue was inserted during an ADR session. It's to paper over a critical plot problem. Based on what came before there's zero reason for them to be going there. It's not the logical next step from a previously established problem the characters have to solve. So a bunch of exposition is inserted to give a reason why they're even going here. This technique is more obvious and pervasive in Rise of Skywalker and it gives both movies the same effect of lurching from plot point to plot point with no logical connection between them.

Abrams and Johnson don't understand the concept of the Force. They just thought: "Ha! The Force is just space wizards doing cool magic tricks". So they simply made Kylo and Rey do cool stuff which looks visually impressive (and is used by scriptwriters as a deus ex machina to get characters out of sticky situations without needing much thought) but is inconsistent with other Star Wars films. Kyle freezing the plasma bolt in mid air looks cool but why didn't we see Darth Vader or the Emperor do that? The sequels make it clear that Vader is more powerful than Kylo but Kylo has more amazing abilities. How can Kylo accurately read minds when all Vader, the Emperor, and Yoda could do was sense someone's feelings or feel vibrations in the Force? Again, it is inconsistent. I thought The Force Awakens was a very average movie but it did set up a lot of stories and great possibilities that were not explored in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. The problems were present in The Forcd Awakens but The Last Jedi is the movie that smashes the sequels beyond repair. Kennedy, Abrams, and Johnson were handed a great opportunity and they totally screwed it up because they neither understand nor respect the original Star Wars movies.

I think I got on this thread by you mentioning about force powers being downloaded into each Jedi, and my assertion is merely that even if she knew all the force powers does not mean they become all powerful, again like Neo's martial arts, especially the scene right after wherr Morphius easily bests him multiple times.

The Disney Threesome (to be called a trilogy, there must be a cohesive storyline, at minimum) is a complete waste of time. Don't care how much money Disney wasted since they can make more, potentially. My time is more valuable. Haven't seen, nor ever will see, TRoS. What's the point? Tbf, I didn't even like TFA, so I was likely to carry a negative opinion of any follow ups in that timeline. I heard they are decanonizing the Threesome--that would be cool, I guess?, but it won't bring fans back. At least not this fan:)

JJ didnt invent Force Download. The authors of the novels, required to fix the terrible movies did since the movie didn't bother, trying to fix the mess they had been given. Making it worse in this instance trying to make sense of this mess. A fault of Disneys terrible sequels, not JJ though. Not to worry though, he screws up enough everywhere else. Edit: Also from what I hear JJ wanted Luke there in Jedi robes but Rian said "can you not?" and then he changed it. Always had issues with Hyperspace past the shield, but yeah it has more issues than I thought off. Also JJ doubles down on the jumping with tje skipping. All rules get broken. Edit2: Yoda2 is talking about the PT, OT and Sequels. But it makes no sense when the foes of the prequels ARE the baddies of the OT too.

Kylo never uses his freeze laser trick in Ep8 or 9. Kylo then gets Force Diad and can grab stuff across space and time. He can also get items teleported to him. Rey can hover and/or fly, and she can heal with no damage to her, so if anyone ever gets hurts again she can fix it right away, Rey can get stronger every time she goes Hulk mad but no side effect to it, yet Yoda and every other Jedi say giving in to anger is not the Jedi way but she does it all the time and she never stops to think about it or suffers ant effects from it. Rey can shoot lightning powerful enough to blow up ships but it takes years to learn it. Only Palps and Dooku used it. None of the other Sith in Clone Wars or in the first 6 films do it. Rey can soul suck every Jedi into her and blast Palps. Both are God-modding and Mary Sue-ing it up so bad. BTW how could Luke become a myth after only being missing for 6 years? The comics say it's only 6 years that Kylo left Luke. Phasma woulda been cool if she could stealth like Predator or she had a jet pack and a light saber and she was the Jedi killer who killed Rey's parents. Forget Ouchie the Jedi Killer who died underground and left the Mcguffen knife behind.Finn. Poe and Rey all shoulda had the Force and learned from Luke to be new Jedi. P.S. 3PO lost his gold arm after he crash landed on a mission with other Droids and he had to get another Droid's arm? Something along that line. It's in a book but there was no reason for it except to sell a toy. I added this just to let some people know who still don't know.

57:40 to be clear, star wars is not science fiction. science has never played a major role in star wars. the genres usually cited are space opera and fantasy. it is more of a fantasy because it revolves around a magic system, not science. although it appears futuristic, advanced technology is rarely explained, and it actually isn't futuristic since it takes place "a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away." I actually think this misapprehension of star wars as a sci-fi is responsible for many of the faults of the sequel trilogy. this is how they managed to miss the point of the force and the point of lightsabers. the rest of this video is amazing and you did an awesome job, agree with almost everything you said. just a minor nitpick.

Phasma's novel sets her character as the type who is a survivor first. She threw her oen family and tribe to an enemy when she saw the writing on the wall that they would be overtaken and killed, and so made a deal to be spared if she gave them up. And she did this as a child. She's ruthless and will turn on her allies if it means her own survival. Wait a minute, just realised something. You say Rian Johnson convinced JJ Abrams to take out the scene with Luke levitating large rocks at the end of Force Awakens. But that's exactly what Rey does at the end of Last Jedi. Either he hoodwinked JJ into removing that idea so he could kept all to himself for Rey or he stole the idea from him afterwards. The scoundrel!!! The excuse of Luke not being connected to the force while on that island planet is ridiculous because Jedi get visions of the future, just like what happened in Empire Strikes back. He can;t disconnect himself from the force even if he tried. If a far off planet blew up he would feel it just like Obi-Won did in the first movie. Rian hoodwinked him!!!!

@@DarthdYT I was concern about what these movies were going, seeing as I noticed Disney starting to go down a dark path around that time period and stop going to watch their movies as the magic with them was fading, but I was hoping that it would be good as I wanted to see movies I am old enough to watch since I was not born yet (though I was born by the time of ROTS but too young) and was excited to see a new generation of Star Wars in my era. Literally, I remember before TFA, my 9 to 10 year old self rewatched Legacy of the Force, closing the book at the tragic but bittersweet ending, expecting there would be a Canon version of the Sequel Trilogy would be as perfect if not more. Now, 5 to 6 years later, I still follow Legends Canon/Old Canon with a few exceptions such as the shows of Dave Filoni and Bad Batch. I didn't even watch TROS as the TLJ was just too disappointing and I decided to return to the Legends Sequel Trilogy. These movies are too inconsistent; they are without heart and effort, rushing through these movies and with horrible arcs. And now we have a mess of these movies that would remember as shams. I’m not saying that mind rape should’ve been impossible, considering that the Jedi used mind tricks to force information out. And the darkside should theoretically be able to dig deeper and use even more pain or even fear, like fake visions of your family or loved ones being hurt, and then that causing the person to forcefully think about that thing, dropping their mental prison and helping extract the information
@DarthdYT
@DarthdYT 2 жыл бұрын
One thing I probably didn't make clear is the distinction between a force power existing vs it being fully thought out. I don't have a problem with the idea of reading minds, because that concept has been around since the beginning. But the filmmakers never differentiate between Kylo and Vader. Why did Vader have to use a torture droid on Leia, while Kylo was able to just use the force to extract information? A good comparison might be looking at Xmen Jean and Prof X. They both had the same mind reading power but she was far more limited and iirc needed physical contact. The story set boundaries and had explanations that helped the audience understand.

I thought you would appreciate my Quora answers to a Star Wars fan question: When it comes to sequels, there are always more expectations and a history that writers attempt to live up to. It usually involves a balance of paying homage as well as creating new characters and plots. The mistake often made by creators is to bring back an iconic character to tantalize fans, then decide that said character is in the way and kill them off. The Star Wars trilogy is a glaring example of beloved characters being thrown away to make way for the new. The trilogy had some good points. Kylo Ren has got to be one of the most complex villains in fiction. Adam Driver's performance was excellent as well as Daisy Ridley's. The chemistry was undeniable. I don't agree that Rey is a Mary Sue. She is a strong character with emotion that fights darkness. She has affection, compassion and even love for Ben, yet will not support Kylo Ren's darkness in any shape or form. The contrast of light versus dark as well as the force bond between them is intriguing. I heard one metaphor describe them as the Ying and the Yang. Is it no wonder that reylo manifested itself among fans? Kylo and Rey are the most compelling characters of the entire trilogy. The problem is that was the only thing I liked about the trilogy…Finn and Hux had some good screen time, but that was it. Rey is a strong protagonist but Kylo is not, he is not given a central roll in the plot, only the fans gave him that. He is a tortured villain …essentially a hero trapped in an evil shell, brainwashed Star Wars style. His character provides a link to the original heroes of the saga. Which brings us right back to the disappointment of fans. Kylo is Ben Solo son of Han and Leia, nephew of Luke Skywalker. What we eventually discover is that Palpatine and Snoke basically succeeded in decimating the Skywalker family. Ben was coveted by the dark side through mind manipulation, misunderstanding and family tragedy. Ben's family never realized Luke nearly killed Ben in a moment of weakness. Luke never realized Palpatine was crawling into Ben's mind and dividing the family. Everything goes wrong! Resulting in the death of the iconic characters, one by one. Mark Hamill expressed disappointment that Han, Luke and Leia would never unite again. This is an echo of everything that went wrong with the Star Wars heroes. Han Solo was killed off by his own son. Though this moment worked for shock value, fans were disappointed that Han was ripped so cruelly from the film. Han Solo died because the writer's wanted him gone and most likely couldn't afford to pay Harrison Ford for the upcoming films. So he is killed at the hand of Kylo Ren, eventually resulting in the redemption of Ben Solo. The other star wars heroes suffer similar fates. There was never a resolution or reunion between the family. I am not saying they should have had a family sit down to discuss their differences or included sappy drama! This is Star Wars it could have all been talked out over a lightsaber duel or rescue mission. Han's death could have happened in a number of ways even rescuing his son. The creators wanted a Darth Vader backwards, a vulnerable person hardened into the dark side. Didn't we already get that with the Anakin prequel? (I do believe even Vader got more of a reunion with luke!) Luke Skywalker dies abruptly once confronting Ben to save the resistance, the confrontation was short and heroic, but with no resolution. It did not shift Ben to the light or have any significant impact for the plot. Another criticism by viewers is that Kylo could have shifted towards the light sooner or become a double agent. Again this sentiment is brought on by the fact that there was no closure between the old characters. Han speaks to his son then is killed, Luke confronts Ben breifly then dies. Only Leia made it to the third film, reaches out to her son says “Ben" then dies. We finally see a redeemed Ben Solo come back and fight by Rey's side (very briefly) then dies. Between the writers and Palpatine the entire trilogy destroyed our iconic heroes with evil machinations and then death. No wonder fans were pissed!

Lucas was trying to make a point that courage and ability come in all sizes (it's a film for kids, after all), and that the baddest mofo in the universe (Darth Vader) can be a tormented shell of his former self. 2) Since Abrams undid everything the Rebels accomplished in the original trilogy, who's to say the next trilogy won't undo everything the Resistance accomplished in episodes 7-9? Did you make the Rey & Finn analysis video you mentioned @ timestamp 51:17? If so can you provide a link?

Heath that one has been on the backburner for awhile, but I do plan to pick it up again soon. I've already got most of the research done and script written. Right now I'm working on a couple more lighthearted comedy edits, I had always intended to switch between video essay and comedy but I got caught up in all the ST drama and kept making only analysis videos 😏

Personally, I still blame Rian more. JJ, for as uninspired as he was, still at least kept consistant with the main themes of hope, family, and good vs evil in Star Wars. Rian, however, butchered all of that and turned Star Wars into a world where there is no good and evil because both sides are the same, where hope is just a word devoid of any action to achive that hope, and where family doesn't matter because you are a nobody. He also destroyed any potential for Kylo to logically be redeemed. I know JJ redeemed him anyway but it still doesn't makes sense in the context of how Kylo does evil things in TLJ of his own free will without remorse. And at least JJ left the next films wide open and full of possibilities. Ruan basically left the story in an impossble place going into the final movie.

@@Obi-Wan_Kenobi JJ dumped a bunch of unanswered plot threads onto Rian to answer that would have given him no creative room to make the film he wanted so I don't really blame him for throwing TFA off a cliff and hitting reset instead.

The Lore released parallel to TFA emphasized that Snoke is "not a Sith, but is very powerful" or whatever. To me this low-key felt like a bad attempt at distancing the story from "prequel" lore, treating Sith as some dirty word nobody likes, even though the OT first introduced them, it's the Prequels and the EU that expanded on them. It's ironic, considering they ran back to use the Sith so heavily in TroS, as of realizing that fans actually liked them. Maybe that's just me being cynical (very likely). Maybe they knew they couldn't really use the Sith because we just had Vader and Palps die in the previous trilogy. But the introduction of a supposedly very old and very powerful force-user raises so many questions, all of which were "answered" in TroS with "Palpatine made Snoke". Insane!
@DarthdYT
@DarthdYT 3 жыл бұрын
My biggest problem with the topic of your first sentence, is that things shouldn't need to be read in the EU for the in-film story to make sense. We have SIX movies establishing the Sith and Rule of Two, then suddenly we have Snoke who's.....something else? A character who breaks established lore and gets zero explanation....it just confuses me how any competent writer could ok that idea. And I agree, it seems obvious they were not only trying to distance themselves from the previous films, but also to subtly discredit them as much as possible. Like how the grand story of how Han lost the Falcon was that he straight up gave the key to a parking attendant who then stole the ship. Or how Han sold Luke's medal for drinking money.

I walked out of the movie thinking it would have been a forgettable movie without the Start Wars brand propping it up. Hell I make the comparison that Mortal Engines is a better movie than TFA but failed because it lacked the multibillion dollar marketing push and a 40 year old fanbase.
@DarthdYT

Wow, great point. Imagine the same story taking place in ancient times with metal swords and magic...most of what made TFA so enjoyable was the nostalgia. Without the star wars name the base story is pretty basic, all the most interesting stuff happened offscreen.

"This isn't Star Trek, we shouldn't look to closely at the science." Just because things don't adhere to absolutes doesn't mean we should excuse such massive leaps in logic. And until Disney Star Wars did follow logic.

Yeah, I really hate that argument. Even worse is how often I hear "it's a movie, don't think about it so deeply". Like...I've heard the same people rave about all the deep themes and planning that went into connecting all of the MCU.🤷‍♂️

@@DarthdYT Art is subjective. People will find value wherever and with whatever suits them. For science fiction you typically expect people to appreciate the science that goes into it. And the thing with story telling is there has to be a believability for things to work. The infinite possibilities still depend on a foundation of logic for them to make sense. If the fictional world says that water is dry then it has to adhere that rule and the repercussions of it.

@@MrMirageCaster I think that's a great summation of the biggest problem many films these days have: they don't have a solid foundation, and the audience can feel they don't make sense, even if most viewers never analyze to figure out exactly why.

7:14 To be fair, this one is justified. Force users can only manhandle NON Force users that easily. Other Force users, if powerful enough, will be highly resistant or downright immune. Rey’s power was still dormant when she first met Kylo on Takodana, but it was active during their duel later on. The interrogation scene is there to show us exactly this, how much more resistant Rey’s mind is than that of a normal person like Poe. And the same goes for her body. Had Kylo tried to immobilize her during the duel, it simply would not have worked.
@DarthdYT
@DarthdYT Жыл бұрын
Your explanation makes perfect sense; I would argue the problem is in the execution. I believe they absolutely needed to show Kylo attempting to immobilize her and it no longer working, reinforcing her "unlocked" skills. Lacking that brief interaction makes the audience question why he didn't at least try, with the only 2 logical explanations being he didn't remember he could or he already knew he couldn't.
