It has been unusually warm and dry. The ground is fit for plowing, and Herman the Oliver 1950 is fresh out of the hospital, ready to try out his repairs. We get going with a cold start, get hooked up and then hit the field Ride along and enjoy that Detroit Diesel sound pulling 6 -16 inch bottoms. 2 stroke diesel power!

Plowing has always been one of my favorite tasks. It was the beginning of everything becoming new again. That's why Spring is my favorite time of year. Can't believe how dry your soil is. We just got more snow yesterday in central New York. At least it's frozen now and we don't have mud.
@ThatOliverGuyChris

We were wet all during harvest, but it wasn't large quantities of moisture, but just enough to keep us out of the fields. We've caught up some with rains in the last few weeks, but with our well drained soil, once the frost came out it dried out fast.

I remember back in the late '60's when Dad and I plowed in February. An IH 460 and 606 with two IH 311 plows. Then he bought an 1800 and 545. I recall plowing in a blizzard where we couldn't see each other 50' apart. It was a great time,

I plowed with the 1800 in December. It started snowing, and it looked cool with the strip of soil in an otherwise white field. Eventually there was enough snow it started making the stalks hang and plug the plow, so I called it quits.

Plowing in February? Awesome! I was gonna plow my garden in winter, after these milder days, but didn't get my plow wheel fixed yet. I know the ground has very little frost in it. I was able to pound my driveway markers in after the January snowstorm we got.

The only time it got cold we had snow that kept the frost out of the ground. It's been cold enough to put a little frost in the ground, but I might be able to do some more field work when it warms up again this week.

I do love to see and hear plowing. We had a little heavier soil in Michigan. It doesn't look look like you are getting very deep and the plow wasn't leaving a clean crisp furrow. We were going down 11 - 12 inches back in the 60's. I know you were just screwing around a bit there, but it was sort of a thing for us to have a perfectly straight furrow and no GPS. We were correcting the whole time so that when we were finishing a field (when going around the whole field), we ended up right on property line, or when going the other direction, a perfect little strip in the middle. Fun to see ole' Herman scream.

That is a toggle trip plow I believe. You should see us plow stoney ground up in Wisconsin. My big plows are automatic reset, the springs are much larger and most of the time you just have to stop to reset if they don't trip back in on their own.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 3 ай бұрын
@@burrridgefarms Oliver called this "cushion trip". There are springs that help cushion the hit of smaller rocks without tripping. If it hits a big enough obstacle the spring compresses far enough to let the trip mechanism flip the bottom up.

Yep, starting a land in corn stubble with rusty bottoms, equals poor trash flow. By the book it's supposed to be 105 on the PTO, but when I had it on the dyno it was around 130.

Not too bad. That was formerly a hedgerow that now gets a lot of traffic, so it has more rocks and compaction, so it will pull harder than the surrounding areas.

Question for my Oliver/White expert: 2-85 White, 354 Perkins, sent the cav/delphi injector pump off to a professional diesel shop to be rebuilt, got it back, started tractor, fuel weeps out of the little round "damper" piece that threads on to the front side of the pump where there is a little pinhole. I bought a new damper piece and copper washer to replace on the pump, it's just a half inch wrench that un-threads it. Is that the right thing to do? Will any small pieces fall out behind it if I take it off? I really don't want to go through the hassle of pulling the pump off again and send it all the way back across the state for them to try again, but I've already spent enough on this pump to have bought a reman by now. Thanks in advance.

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 2 ай бұрын
I'd say around 7 on the main tank. The fenders are also fuel tanks, so it can hold a little over 100 gallons when all three tanks are full. Then you can run around the clock, or pretty darn close.

Auto reset is about all there is in my area, but they are all semi mounted. Herman doesn't have 3 point hitch, and I bought this plow in Indiana to get a big pull type. Hopefully someday I can find a pull type with auto reset.

No, this is an Oliver built in Charles City, Iowa. The CBT can trace its roots back to Oliver in a deal they made that helped launch CBT back in the day. The engine is a Detroit Diesel.
