In my opinion, the most important requirement to become a good PM or PO is to be interested and personally invested in the product you're responsible for. You must be excited about the product. If you have that, you'll know what to do. Without that, you'll feel lost, unmotivated and not productive.

this is exactly right, i have a pretty powerful position atm directly under the CEO, but everything they have build is either shit or boring. And instead of building things it's just navigating between issues without knowing where we are heading. I cant do it all by myself. So i feel demotivated ofc.

This is a terrific video! Have absolutely faced each one of these, and am surprised at how Diego has been able to isolate these very pertinent problems. I think each person's solution to these problems is unique, and its best to find a way that aligns with your personality and situation. The problems identified in the video make up a superb reference point indeed.

I am really enjoying your videos. Agree with the tip of blocking your time even at the risk of always appearing busy. I would also recommend - being specific about what you intend to do in that time block once you get closer to the date. So maybe a week ahead - replace "work on roadmap" with "write a 1-pager on x feature".

It's very amazing video ever. Thank you so much Diego. I learned a lot from this. You are very right about :"Don't aim to make all people happy, you should care about your product and the customers"

Hello, this questions is off the top of today, do you think it nice to break into product management working in a startup?.
@itsmoaaz
@itsmoaaz 3 жыл бұрын
A bit of advice for you from someone in the field. Being a PM at a true startup, by that I mean a company with only seed stage funding is a good way to get PM experience however it is not a good idea if you don't have deep expertise in another field. Startups have limited funding and in return hire essential headcount only, so if you are trying to get pm experience you need something to offer in return like deep software experience or be very skilled at marketing and ad campaigns or be a talent designer. In return they may offer to let you take on the role of a pm in your area of expertise. For example a growth product manager can be a good pivot if you have a lot of marketing and user acquisition experience.

Hi @Ogbonna, thank you for asking! Absolutely! Breaking into PM at a startup will be a different experience than a large tech or FAANG company - A Startup will have an environment where as a PM you'll be working on most, if not more (and beyond) of the tasks a PM has to do: from ideation, customer interviews... etc... all the way to launching the product and seeing it grow. There might not be that many PMs on the team, so the workload will be heavy on each PM (or just you!). At a large Tech company you'll probably have a more structured approach where there might be other teams (User Research) that will do interviews for/with you, your team may have many PMs, so the workload may be balanced. Let me know if this helps!
