Your podcasts are so so interesting!! I am learning a lot! Can I use the whey from my non dairy nut milk kefir to inoculate my krauts or vegetables instead of the Caldwell culture package. I thought good bacteria is good bacteria so why not, but unfortunately I wasn't too successful with fermenting vegetables in the past so I thought I 'll ask the expert! 😀

Hi Martina! Since the nut milk kefir doesn't technically make "whey" it wont work the same for culturing other things. It isn't as powerful as actual dairy whey. But you can use just salt to culture, just use 2-3 times more to balance out the ferment. Culturing veggies is so easy I bet you were somewhat successful and just didn't know it!

Í dehydrate my Sourdough starter then freeze it in freezer bags and it lasts for ever.

What milk did you use aboard ship? The pasteurized and homogenized that they provide? I thought you said don’t use that type of milk?

You can use regular milk to make kefir. You want to avoid ULTRA pastuerized milk as the kefir grains do not do well with it. But you can use regular pastuerized milk and it works great for making kefir .

I used the powdered starter for my kefir, it said it would culture about 7 times, but I have done it for over 10 days and it is still making the milk thicker and seems to be making more kefir. What do you think about that?

Hi Amy! Our Easy Kefir can make dozens of batches of kefir. If you make kefir regularly then the good bacteria is getting fresh food and will stay alive and active for a very long time!
