If you want to live in the middle of no where, you will make a lot money. If you live in or near Chicago, New York, LA.... any reasonable big city you will make substantially less money. Emphasis on the word "substantially ".

Ok. This is very misleading and wrong. Average starting salary for podiatrist coming out of residency is actually 80k in most reasonably urban areas. The 100+ salary is rare and you would often have to move / relocate to another state/ to a remote location - leaving friends and family. With 80k as the starting salary and the debt coming out of med school and undergrad of 310k, the debt to income ratio for podiatrist is one of the worst in the field of physicians.

Do not work as an associate. I shadowed 3 DPM’s, all 3 in private practice. 2 of the DPM’s make 400k+ with a busy practice. The 3rd podiatrist I shadowed makes the salary you mentioned. He is an associate who pays 40% of his salary to the DPM that owns the practice. I see two reasons you would make 80k out of residency. 1) you are beginning to build patient volume and a referral base. Your salary will increase with time. 2) you are an associate with a crappy contract. This field has a huge ceiling.

@@ateebs5736 Thank you for the response. Are you a DPM? I think you are looking at the exceptions not the rule. 400k Is just not the case and is not remotely close to the average. Even if you make 160k and are working 80 hours are week (which is not a good way to live), that still equates to 80k annual for a typical 40hr work week. Look at an entire graduating class of 2018 and 2019 (ignoring COVID abnormalities) and review their salaries - not just 3 successful people. Then focus on just those individuals who live in reasonably urban cities. Urban settings tend to be more saturated then rural and generally tend to pay physicians less across the board. Starting a practice is entirely another conversation. There is a lot of risk and a lot of failure in starting business. We tend to hear a lot about those who succeed. But for every successful practice there are a number of failed ones. In addition, if you are an average person of humble means, you do not have another 100k to 200k on hand of excess capital to start a business. So in addition to your ~310k med school loans, you could potentially have another ~200k. And how long does it take to grow your patient base? It might be quick. Or it could take a long time, especially in a competitive market place. You may make 80k for several years while holding a 510k loan that is accumulating interest. Don't forget a home purchase, car, family. Being a doctor just isn't what it used to be. If you are interested in discussing this further let me know. And thank you for the response.

I think Zak is misleading and wrong. I have friends that are first year residents making almost that much. The word on the street from dozens of podiatrists that I talked to was that if you are taking a job out of residency for less than 170k you are getting ripped off. Heck, even the VA starts you at like 100k.
@ZZtopZaki3 жыл бұрын
@@fox6727 I really wish I was wrong. I really do. But that isn't the case. Im afraid you heard wrong...the word on the street is misleading. The reality is there only a handful of jobs in hospitals and VA. Not everyone coming out of school will find a job there...if any. The majority of available jobs do not pay that much. You have to move in the middle of no where to make real money. Or get really really lucky. Hardwork alone won't cut it. I can DM you in more detail if you would like. But again, i really do wish you were right.

If you dont mind, can you indicate a few things of the dozens of people you talked to? (1l Which cities do they work in? (2) Are they private, VA or hospital? (3) Did they have to move away to get the job? (4) What is their starting pay? Please do not give any specifics. Just general info.
