I never really cared a whole lot about the shiny legendary events in the past as if I really wanted one I could find one myself, but knowing that they’re locked to these silly codes that won’t be seen again for god knows how long just makes it feel more like a task than getting something neat

My main problem with Shiny Locking Pokémon is that they’ve been really inconsistent with it. I can get some locks, like uncatchable Pokémon, the Box Legendary Pokémon or stuff like Cosplay Pikachu, but they do a lot of weird things with it. In X and Y, they didn’t need to lock the birds or Mewtwo, and debatably didn’t need to lock Zygarde either. In Sun & Moon, they locked every Legendary except for Type: Null for some reason. Why only Type: Null? What makes that one special? And then in Sword and Shield, they turned around and locked Type: Null and Poipole for no real reason, as well as keeping Cosmog locked despite Solgaleo and Lunala being huntable in the same game. I can understand locking the Pokémon that are relevant to the story, but often times they lock ones that aren’t relevant, like Necrozma in Sun and Moon, or a handful of the Legendary Pokémon in Legends Arceus, and all the past Legendary Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet. Just make consistent rules, and make it make sense.

My biggest problem with nowdays distributions is those Game Stop codes, there is no Game Stop in my country. So I wouldn't even have a chance to get codes for genesect, vulcanion and marshadow unless I leave country where I live. And this is a problem for me with distribution through stores. I am aware that there are a large number of these stores in the United States, but for me the closest one is in Germany

Yep, as of last year, there's no more GameStop here because of reasons and only have Cex and a rare chance of finding a Sports Direct that has a GAME store inside their building, or head to my nearest Smyths stores for games, but I have to get a bus or a car to go to them because they are either in town or near an retail outlet, so yeah

It’s absolutely ridiculous that there are Pokémon going back to Gen 5 that STILL haven’t ever had legitimate releases (Like Keldeo or Meloetta)… That’s almost 15 years at this point. It’s one thing if they actually intended to release them, but to lock them and NEVER release them is just stupid.

One thing I do have to correct you on is the fact that Alolan Raichu and Alolan Marowak are indeed shiny huntable in Sword and Shield through the Max Lair as you can find them as wild encounters however Alolan Exeggutor is not in the Max Lair so unfortunately, it's still in shiny jail in SWSH.

Shiny Locks aren't a bad idea as (like you said near the end of the video) locking uncatchable shinies is a pretty good thing, however them shiny locking every single legendary and mythical in PLA and S/V is so annoying. I get shiny locking the Box Art Legendaries but the Sub-legendaries and the returning ones? It's just gone too far.

It’s super weird as they’ve really embraced shiny hunting in the switch era, giving so many different ways to hunt for them and even events with boosted odds, but then decided to also crack down on a certain set of them. It’s to the point where the new Regis being huntable feels like they just forgot to lock them.

There's an Ariados in the Ursaluna storyline of The Teal Mask that is shiny locked. A fucking Ariados. This "it won't be shiny in the cutscene" shit is not worth it when we're at the point of locking a Pokemon I can find hundreds of in the wild. I feel like gen 9 was especially bad because they didn't want to code how they'd appear shiny in the overworld and battle and how that would interact if the player left the FoV or not, so they didn't bother and locked them.

What's worse is that when Pokemon Go ends, there will no longer be a way to get legit shiny meltan,melmetal, Genesect, and Deoxys. Genesect is my favorite mythical/mythical shiny and it bugs me that I'll never be able to do a legit hunt for it on console. Also allegedly according to the SupremeRK9s when Gamefreak was asked why they shiny lock pokemon, it's to "preserve the wonder of encountering a legendary." In other words they want people to focus on the fact that they are facing a legendary instead of only caring about whether its shiny or not.

The only shiny locks that really bother me are the S/V snack legendaries, and that's only because the vast majority of them are easily available in other games

Also as a side note, I think another reason for the gen 9 locks is because we're supposed to be meeting specific entities rather than random legendaries. Like the Raidons and Ogerpon and other legendaries are specific characters essentially, so visual continuity is seen as a bit more important

Let's also talk about this: How dare they lock pokemon that "need to be consistent with the cutscene" meanwhile in Dynamax Adventures, you battle 4 whole ass pokemon that don't look shiny even if you CATCH AND USE THEM IN THE NEXT BATTLES WITHIN THE 4 POKEMON BATTLES. In general I just REALLY hate Event Exclusives and Mythical Pokemon... It kinda spits in the face of the whole "Gotta Catch Em All" slogan when some people are legitimately locked out of getting them. Not everyone has access to the events where these shinies are given out. And on top of that, they openly prevent you from trading mythical Pokemon in Pokemon Home, further limiting who has access to them. Its incredibly frustrating. I know its mostly a safety measure to prevent distribution of hacked Pokemon, but still... I wasn't able to complete the Pokedex in Pokemon Home to get that Magearna, all because I have no way to obtain the Mythical Pokemon (which for some reason are required :/).

super hot take: i think it’s so stupid that any Pokémon is ever shiny locked, but i also don’t think resetting a million times for hours is any better than being handed out codes. codes require no work and feel like you’re getting a shiny completely undeservingly (this also makes shinies less rare in a vacuum) shiny hunting however is also not necessarily “working” for your shiny imo. resetting, setting up multiple running games at the same time, chaining, whatever it is that’s best for each gen, is not a rewarding enough experience to make a shiny feel earned. anyone who’s stumbled upon a shiny randomly knows those early feelings of seeing one and either being confused, or freaking tf out. i think Legends Arceus has done the best job with shinies. the sound indicator, overworld Pokémon multiply the amount of encounters you’re experiencing exponentially, and the overall speed and late game options to boost those shiny chances for people who do want to hunt, combined with the gameplay, make the experience feel like you actually went out and DISCOVERED a shiny. idk, i think shiny hunting can be fun? but it never really feels earned or rewarding tbh. i would love an alternative method to acquiring shinies, not sure what it would be atm.

First shiny I ever remember finding (static red Gyarados aside) was a Magneton from the power plant in FRLG. My dumb elementary school ass was 1. So proud, and 2. Had no idea what to do. So I plugged the Gameboy Advanced SP into the charger, folded it shut, and proceeded to wait for my removed cousin to come back from high school (I lived with my aunt at the time). The minute he came home, I pulled out the game, still mid-battle, untouched, and just went “look”. So yeah, uh, he freaked out a little bit. Then he caught it. It was his game to begin with, but I think he either lost it or got rid of it somewhere down the line. Oh well.

nah shiny locks are great because you need to catch or defeat the legendaries to move on with the story. I'm not trying to spend days or weeks resetting until I find it before moving an inch in the story to do it all over again with the next legendary. same with starters. shiny locking the starters is great, otherwise i'd never get to play the game even though i can hatch eggs later.
